Salisbury. The cathedral houses the oldest operating clock in the UK, is home to one of the 4 original copies of the Magna Carta, and has the highest spire in the UK.
William Golding (Lord of the Flies) was my dad's English teacher at the Bishop Wordsworth school, and I like to think dad and his chums were the inspiration for the novel....😅..

Apparently, "The Black Boy" was one of Charles II's nicknames, so there are no unpleasant connotations :) (I didn't know this, I Googled it! :D) Also, if you're interested in Roman stuff, Pevensey Castle on the Sussex Coast was built in the ruins of an old Roman fort, Anderitum. Whilst the fort is long since decayed, and the castle itself is a touch worse-for-wear, the Roman walls surrounding the castle are still very much in tact! Though, I doubt a visit to the castle would take more than an hour.

Chichester is a beautiful Roman city, with a lot of the wall still standing, and a fantastic cathedral. There is a Roman palace nearby at Fishbourne.
You should also go to Portsmouth and visit the Historic Dockyard, the D Day Museum, Portchester castle and great views from the Spinnaker Tower.

As a Pompey boy born and raised I wholeheartedly agree with the Dockyard, D Day Musuem and Portchester Castle. Chichester is great and nearby there you also have Fishbourne Roman Palace which is really interesting if you are a history nut and don't know much about the Romans.

Winchester is an historic city often overlooked by overseas visitors. I knew little about it until my youngest son attended school there for six years, during which I managed to get there twice or thrice each year and grew to love the place. Few know that at least ten monarchs have their caskets in this cathedral. My favourite cathedral cities, other than those commonly on the tourist beat, are: Hereford, Ely, and Truro.😅

That river is The Itchen and you can walk alongside it (The Itchen Navigation Canal) all the way down to Southampton - a beautiful 10 mile stroll. Southampton is where I live and it boasts some pretty good Norman city walls, an amazing Tudor House and Tudor gardens open to the public and a Titanic museum (this was the port of departure for the Titanic) and really great art gallery both in the Civic Centre. Chill out in the extensive, beautiful parks or shop and dine in the large West Quay Mall. You can hop on a car ferry from here to take a trip across The Solent to The Isle of Wight which is full of amazing history and interesting places to visit.

You should go to Portsmouth. It is famously an island city. Interestingly there was no island there once. The huge thriving beautiful metropolis of Southampton, 17 miles east of Portsmouth actually needed somewhere to dump it's sewage and used a huge barge to float it along the Solent, eventually, after hundreds of years, creating an island. The city is nicknamed Pompey which is a corruption of "Poop and Pee" which amazingly the locals are very proud of. I would advise a little some sort of vapor rub under the nose if you go at low tide.

Loved your video! You guys make a great presentation. And I'm jealous you were able to take your dog with you! My wife and I took the kids through Winchester at the end of May 2023 and we absolutely loved it! We took the Cathedral tour, presented by this wonderful old lady volunteering her time to be there. I highly recommend the tour next time you go. Our kids enjoyed making stain glass windows in the upper area and the little library there was to die for. There's so much to see at that Cathedral. Thank you for showing the Black Boy - looks like a fun place to check out! We enjoyed eating at the God Begot house on High Street and highly recommend. The Great Hall was incredible to see as well. I should point out that the table was commissioned by King Edward I, who promoted the Arthurian legends to promote his reign. It's not the actual round table, which was actually a myth. But it is very historical and interesting to see. I got really caught up looking at the massive columns at the Great Hall. That river walk was amazing too!
I haven't seen all your videos, but if you haven't been to Warwick Castle - you have to go! Rich history to see and experience there.

The house where Jane Austen died is just a couple of hundred yards from the Cathedral. It is not open to the public but there is a plaque on the wall. Also worth seeing are the various Military Museums at Peninsular Barracks which is just up the hill behind the Great Hall. There is also a fantastic large garden behind the Museums, on what used to be the parade ground, with a fountain.....ideal for eating your lunch on a sunny day!

The market happens every week! The lady playing the harp is there every weekend and we also have a man who sits in a spiffy white suit with his electric guitar playing blues covers. We often have food festivals that involve the local business too. Our Hat fair is also another wonderful event with street performers, good food stalls, pop up craft stations that let you learn skills such as wood carving and lots of flowers crowns!
Our Christmas Market is also considered one of the best, the whole cathedral is transformed with an ice rink and giant coldron of mulled wine in the center of the garden grounds
Those houses you saw on the river cost over a million pounds 😅 and unfortunately the black boy closed recently

Another enjoyable video. Ive noticed people recommending Cambridge to you, which I totally with. If you do, may I suggest you extend your visit into the adjacent counties of Suffolk and Norfolk. There are some really nice villages and towns/cities including Norwich, which has another beautiful cathedral. Although in my opinion, beaches/sea are prettier in the south west? there are lots of great costal places to visit, including the extremely trendy and traditional Southwold, with its excellent pier, and Mrs T's fish & chips, at the harbour. To the other end of the scale Great Yarmouth, with its amusements, entertainment and pier, and many other places in between. By the way, Ive never seen any US youtubers visit that part of the country.

I live in Dorset, I recommend that you go to the Iron Age Badbury Rings, the drive along the beech lined road up to the Rings is also outstanding.
There is so much in this county but I mention Badbury because its largely unknown and well worth a visit...its free and the dog will love it.

If you’re going to Dorset you need to visit the village of Milton Abbas, it’s beautiful. I live in one of the 17th century cottages, If I’m home I’ll show you around it. You can also visit the Abbey. It’s stunning on a sunny day.

I'm biased as I am born and bred - my suggestion of a city to visit would be Exeter. Exeter Cathedral is just amazing, you can also see original roman walls and the historic Quay area... Happy travels around our beautiful country!

Southampton is full of great architecture, museums, theatres, churches, art galleries, pubs, restaurants, shops and shopping malls. There are parks and green spaces everywhere. The city is a major port on the confluence of two rivers (the Test & the Itchen) and has great transport links.

My hometown, much missed as I no longer have any family or friends there and no particular reason to return. The Black Boy is a great pub and not one you'd just stumble across, you were well advised. Sad to hear the Great Hall is charging admission now - it always used to be a place you could just wander into.

We enjoyed the Christmas market at Winchester, as for Dorset take a trip back to 1973 and visit Swanage and if you want a beautiful beach try Studland bay.
And Dorset's crowning glory Corf Castle which you can get to on the steam railway from Swanage.

You weren't that far from me! I live in the town of Gosport, which is next to Portsmouth, just a short car journey from Winchester.
If you're looking for recommendations for when you're in Hampshire again, give Portsmouth a go and visit Spinnaker Tower and the Historic Dockyard, you'll get a great view of the city and harbour and the chance to see the remains of the Mary Rose, the flagship of King Henry VIII.
If you take a trip up Portsdown Hill on the outskirts of Portsmouth, you'll get an amazing view, and can visit Royal Armouries: Fort Nelson, an artillery museum.
Gosport itself doesn't have much going for it unfortunately, but there are a few small naval museums here.
