    I just bought a cello sound post setting tool and adjusted my wife's beautiful new cello. I work on guitars but never tried anything like this before. The only guy in town that passes for a luthier put the post in crooked and too far in so I decided I needed to learn this skill. I trimmed it and set it exactly like you demonstrated and now her cello sounds better. Thank you so much for the lessons!

    I bought a cello that did not have a post in it, so the face is warped and everything. I put my post in with exactly the same method shown here, but i had never seen a video like this before. I am proud of myself and very grateful for this video for reassuring me

    Edgar thanks for sharing your expertise; the cello I am working on has three small pads on the top and bottom plates for the soundpost to be installed between;is this unusual?I see that the Cello you are working on here does not have this feature.

    I'm noticing that sound posts always seem to be made from spruce . Why ? I'm wanting to try oak , walnut , poplar , maple , cedar and other woods to see if it effects the sound or tone differently .

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  6 років тому +9

      Russ Corbett it will change less than you imagine as long it is made out of wood. I would rather spend more time in getting really good in fitting precise. That makes much more difference.
      But anyhow let us know your results. We are all very curious about your new experiments!

    Thank you for the informative video. When I moved, my sound post fell down and there are no Luthiers within driving distance. What camera did you use to show inside the endpin hole? My cello sounded great before I moved. I wish there was a mark inside for the sound post location.

  • @bennyblanko3
    @bennyblanko3 2 роки тому

    Thanks for all your videos! They are great. Everyone sets the sound post vertically in the correct position, and then adjusts the top location slightly for best even sound, response, and volume. But, what about moving the bottom of the post? Can you adjust sound a little by moving the bottom of the post also, or is it almost insignificant?

    Maestro, I’ve just had my very ancient cello fully restored here in Australia (20 month restoration completed April 10, 2021) . The top plate was re-arched, a new bass bar and new bridge were fitted etc etc. Would you advise that I get a new soundpost fitted in a month or two even though the cello isn’t new? I’m assuming the top plate might want to settle a bit, even though it has been repaired and reinforced.

    • @heathermcdougall8023
      @heathermcdougall8023 2 роки тому

      Retired professional here. Get a "temporary " sound post made for it immediately , so it can be played. It will need to be played pretty regularly, and try to keep it in the coolest part of your house.Get it checked around the 4-5 month period, and you should hear when it "plays up and is not "performing". Remember, cello top and bottom plates are way tougher and thicker than violins, so move less and move more slowly. I tink a 4 moth [eriod should eb good.

    Great video, thank you, I was under the impression by watching episode 5 that the SP has to be placed behind the bridge foot, as many mm as the thickness of the top plate there. Here you say the SP should be placed behind the bridge foot, as many mm as the thickness of the SP itself. Maybe I'm making a mistake, please tell me and put me out of my misery.

    Uff.. I totally do not understand, how you will find exact position.. 😮
    You can measure outside body, placement of bridge, etc., ok, but violin/hello is not from glass.. So how you find inside position, if you have outside measurement? 🤯
    I am asking, because this setting is waiting on me, I have bought a violin kit, quite decent one, so, despite of finish all things, I can not imagine how to precisely position soundpost.. We are talking about millimeters.. All videos show similar approach, etc.. But how to measure? Make some marks inside body? Before glueing? But bridge could be repositioned, so preliniary marks become useless.. Thank you for video and any help from anybody..

      I just received the exact same instrument, and the soundpost was rolling around inside. Did they resolve it for you, or leave you on your own to get it fixed? Without a soundpost, there is almost no volume produced by a bow on the correctly tightened/tuned strings - once the soundpost is fitted the lacking volume will be resolved?
