This is the single most badass thing I've ever seen on a lawn care channel, plus the science behind it is very sound. There are people who want to sell a bag of "humichar" for $80+ and this is as good or likely way better. Obviously not for everyone but I love the bravery. Way to go BYD this outstanding! 👍👍👍👍
We did this to our hay fields and it works but its also really bad, bad because the carbon is released to the atmosphere. We really need to stop doing that and start carbon farming. I could see doing this once, but I certainly would not do it every year, and I wouldn't advocate for it.
@@infiniteadam7352 Not every year, but periodic burns are extremely beneficial. Human interference with naturally occurring burns is one reason why we have so many invasive species of plants in previous prairie/grass/marsh lands, out of control forest fires, and the regional disappearance of native species. I'm aware a front lawn is different, but the effect of a controlled burn on the atmosphere would be minimal compared to the positive effects on nature, much less compared to the artificial pollution caused by huge industry.
I do this annually. I hate scalping and bagging. This is so much better. Being chard the sun heats up that burnt lawn and that's energy for roots. You'll get a lawn very quickly and it will be thicker and healthier.

Nice job BYD! But one thing you said was that burning your grass is a form of fertilization. Burning dead grass adds carbon or some would call a biochar to improve the soil. It's a soil fertilization.👊🏾💪🏾

Two questions. 1. Did you have to notify the fire department? 2. How early or when you should burn it? January? February? March? Etc? I can’t wait to try it next year! Awesome video!!!
I'm in southern Tennessee, in a neighborhood that looks a lot like yours. I just burned an area of my Bermuda to test this out. (If the HOA doesn't like it...well, oops, it was an "accident"...lol.) Afterwards, I hose-watered the charred area and raked it to get the char down into the soil. Is there anything else I should do? Or, just wait now for the green-up?

You’ll have to check with your local municipality to see if you need a burn permit. This can be done late fall through Winter. Or early Spring before the Green 🆙.
I got a question BYD I'm thinking of doing this but I live in central Alabama and I've got a few green coming up right now so what I'm asking is it too late to do this now?
If you have a lot of Juicy grass then I’d wait until next season. But normally this process is done on a fully dormant lawn. But you can test on your own property. See what works best for you.
Walter Reeves writes "Aside from the legal necessity to get the legal permit required in most municipalities, burning just does not release much fertilizer. There may be a smidge of phosphorus and a wisp of potassium left when the grass burns….. but its nothing compared to your normal turf fertilizer. "
So in our neighborhood which is Bermuda grass, someone carelessly threw a cigarette out of a passing car and caught my neighbor’s lawn on fire. The area that burned did come up sooner and greener the the adjacent non-burned lawn. That being said, I have not seen any carry over to this year, nor did that area that was burned look any better once it all turned green.
