Muslims make up one of the most diverse religious communities in America, yet face some of the harshest stereotypes of any religious group. Many of these pervasive false narratives were created and magnified in a post-9/11 landscape.
Founded in 2010, Pillars Fund is working to amplify the leadership, narratives, and talents of Muslims. Pillars has distributed more than $9 million in grants to organizations to push back against harmful stereotypes while spotlighting the positive work being done by Muslim communities.
Pillars Fund and organizations like the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) are working to foster social change, cultivate arts, and deepen community for Muslims all over the U.S.

Simply being a Muslim shouldn't come with perceived negativity given the diversity of views, to do so is bigotry. The issue is not that liberal progressive Muslims need a PR makeover like this video seems to suggest.
The problem is with the muslims who hold illiberal and intolerant views. For example in my country the UK 41% of Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal. One can surmise that the most of the remainder don’t have positive views of lgbt either.
The aim should be a Muslim reformation. You dont solve the problem of the bible belt by simply advertising that other Christians are cool, the same goes for the Quran belt.

Even as a non Muslim, this is kind of what I always thought when I see atrocities and corruption done in religion's name.
The the reason most western nations are progressive is because of the protestant reformation and the secularism that followed.
Its not just about the 'image' of the religion, if the core tenets of the religion are incompatible with modern thoughts like gender equality, a handful of people who act more liberally doesn't do anything as a whole.

I became Muslim while incarcerated, for me it was not an easy transformation. I was an avid reader. People have their own way of thinking about religion. I grew up in the segregated south where segregated communities never mingled but always went their separate ways on Sundays. Reading the Quran was enlightening and persuasive. I particularly found verses that appeared to talk directly to me. “Your creation and your resurrection is as an individual soul”. I took that to mean that the individual must stand before the creator and account for his or her time while here. Additionally, “there is no compulsion in religion”. I came to appreciate the richness of Quranic verses and how the emphasis was that religion comes in between a man and his heart. Over the years the worst of us put a Eurocentric spin on how religion is to be viewed. Remember that your creation and resurrection is as an individual soul, nothing more or less. Allah is truly merciful when our understanding is centered and revolves around truth. We must learn how to have love in our hearts in order to grow and appreciate what all human beings share in common, the ability to cultivate the soul and feel the presence of the most high.

The key to managing Islam is to gain control over it and keep a lid on it. You do that by thinning out the imams that won't play ball.

The British during colonialism tried this, turns out people know when your trying to control them and they do not like it, and they tend to violently revolt. They also know when things are unfair like if you are profiting off them (explotation) and not giving them their fair share AKA like with American oil companies in the Middle East. In fact one of the first people to try an "control" Islam was Caliph Mamum (a heretical Mutazila), when he imprisoned Imam Hanbal and wanted to execute him. Today Mutazilas no longer exist, and Imam Hanbal's ideas are one of the 4 major Islamic schools of thought. So many people try to do this, Islam now has naturally built in defenses against people who try to control it, like disobeying authorities who act suspicious or are too involved civilian life beyond what God permits them to do.

I dont hate people I'm just not a fan of any religion. Religion is given so much in the US in regards to leniency for basically running a "non profit" that actually profits. I don't like how I as a child and growing up watched Christian churches take money from us when we didn't have that much money and then nothing change about our church and then when I got older and stopped goingi found out why and its one of the sins they were teaching and thats greed. Come here and practice your religion but dont be asking anyone for money to do it, if someone donates quietly have it be like any other donation. Also I'd prefer you not act like your way is "The Way" and let us all decide on what way we want, I'm tired of really old books really dead people wrote being the rules. I believe in god but it's just written in a more modern book usually submitted as papers by scientists because its science and god is all around us and in everything and nothing. We could all be one people if we let ego and some old hateful ways of thinking go. There wouldn't be stealing if we all shared enough that people got what they needed. That doesnt need to be in a book or prayed about it just needs to be done by everyone. 8 billion people and we can't figure out it's just about caring and sharing.

The muslim religion like the Christian religion is interpreted and followed differently by different groups. It doesn't matter what is written or what the intention of founder was since it's all about faith not facts. Jesus believed that the rich should share their wealth with the poor and almost no Christian wants to believe this even though he said so in the gospels literally. The muslim religion was started by Mohamed which was literally a general and a killer who force his religion on others yet there are believers who believe that this is a religion of peace. Everyone is free to believe what they want but we should judge them by what they do not what they believe.

I really really agree with you... All over the world Muslims are neglected and feared off because of the previous history that they witnessed... To grow and develop Muslims should embrace change stop interfering with the local values of the countries and find peace within... The hate comes from the mullahs which come from turkey, Pakistan,Iran and they create division within the society.... Mosques should be well controlled by the state to stop any kind of evil thoughts that are pushed into the mind of the young generation

You said, "it doesn't matter what is written or what the intention of the founder was", well if anyone who claims to be a Muslim and believes in this kind of things, then he/she doesn't remain a Muslim anymore, he/she becomes a Kafir. You said Muhammad is a killer, well Jesus was not because he didn't have any political power. Look at all the conquest Christians did after gaining power. And killing evil people doesn't mean he is a killer, it means he is strong with justice.

@@thetaomega7816Finances muslims how exactly??? You cant just make a claim like that without providing proof/evidence. In islam we value truth and authentic transmission of information its why our scriptures are so reliable. For example the hadith books like sahih al bukhari that always mentions its sources everytime it reports a story or a quote from the greates man to have ever lived (Muhammad). Christians in the other hand hate truth and thrive in lies because thats the building block of their moraly bankrupt, obviously false, satanicly inspired religion. The gospels are anonymous, we have no idea who wrote them and the authors never mention their sources.

37 years as a Muslim later I realized hold on maybe the heretics do have a point. Religion has good rules for centuries ago many of which are no longer relevant in today's world of modern medicine technology and law enforcement. In the absence of these things you needed heavy doses of dogma and fear to keep people on the straight and narrow.
For example back when you needed several children to work on the fields and every second child died in infancy men who could afford it would marry several women for several children. This was also possible because of lack of food and security. This caused the rich to marry more and have lots of children while the poor guy sat in the corner and played with his tennis balls. There was then this new system that said ok boys party is over you can now have a max of FOUR WIVES not more.
Glad I was raised muslim which helped keep my autistic ass away from many vices. Depression from all the dogma and fear of hellfire was a bit unnecessary though.
