- Ghostly Nuns, Monks, Eerie Footsteps, Phantoms Caught On Camera - Borley Is Certainly One Of The Most Infamous Of All The hHunted Locations Across The British Isles.

The Rectory hasn’t had much luck in its history, The 1862 building replaced a much older rectory, which was destroyed by fire in 1841. Interestingly, the new Borley Rectory caught fire as well and was demolished in 1944. Nothing but legend and stories remain now.
The history of Borley Rectory
Borley Rectory was built next to Borley Church which was erected in the 12th century to serve the residents of three smaller hamlets: Borley, Borley Green and Borley Hall. According to historical documents, there used to be a Benedictine monastery, named Barking Abbey, at Borley Hall. Borley Hall was given to the important Waldegrave Family by Henry VIII.
Legend says that A monk living at the monastery had a forbidden love affair with a nun from a nearby nunnery. They wanted to take off together, but unfortunately, they’re affair was discovered. The monk was sentenced to death by hanging and the nun was walled up alive inside the nunnery walls. According to the legend, the nun can’t find peace and her ghostly spectre is still seen today wandering the graveyard and lanes of Borley.
The ghost stories began in Borley with
Reverend Henry Dawson Ellis Bull who moved into the new Borley Rectory when it was built in 1862 and it wasn’t long for the first ghostly sightings to be spoken about.
The reverends children started seeing a black ghost coach ridden by two headless men and the apparition of a nun in the backyard. Henry Bull allegedly bricked up a window in the dining room so that the family might enjoy dinner without the spectral nun peering at them. Heavy footsteps were heard, and other strange phenomena were claimed. Henry Bull died inside the rectory in 1892. His son, Harry Bull, took over from his father. When Harry died in 1928, the rectory stood empty for a couple of months.
In October that same year, Borley Rectory became the home of Reverend Guy Eric Smith and his wife. While cleaning the rectory, Mrs. Smith stumbled upon a female skull wrapped in a newspaper. Reverend Smith wasn’t particularly alarmed by the discovery and gave the skull a proper burial. However, shortly after the discovery, the couple started noticing strange things. The service bells started ringing by themselves even though they were disconnected, and lights were seen behind the windows when no one was around.
The hauntings started every evening when the couple retired for the night. Each night they were stalked by the sound of heavy footsteps walking right passed their bedroom.

Whoh Stephen i could not live in that Rectory and I'm glad I watched this in the daytime :) That was a sad love story of the nun and monk and how their secret affair led to him being hanged and her being walled up inside the nunnery walls and how coincidentally both rectorys caught fire . Ooh, I love a good ghost story! Isn't it typical for those days that the female nun had the worst death? How cruel. Oh my, what a creepy discovery - a skull wrapped in newspaper! It seems to have started some extremely scary ghostly happenings. I would have left long before then! I loved your storytelling - there were so many shocking stories and discoveries. Btw, isn't Yhana growing up fast! You must be so proud of her. 💕

I've visited a few places in my past that were supposed haunted and the chills and sweats that I got have kept me from returning to any such place ever again. The stories are quite chilling! Oh my nerves....lol Take good care....Bruce and Otis

Hey both, just got in after some filming so catching up on spooky videos with a log fire going, lots of candles and a cheeky beer and you both on our TV, good stuff!!! Not heard of Borley Church, and rectory, now this is a spooky story 👻. Loving the de saturated filter too! Interesting graveyard, different style headstones but not many of them. “Marie Ann Dear….” Loved that. Happy Halloween both x

You have a vivid and clear story telling manner Stephen. I could almost ( but glad it wasn't too clear) picture of the happenings. It is a very harsh punishment 😊 history is full of stories like this. This story though has certainly left its mark on this village 😊
I once watched a video in the early 80s called "the Borley rectum" it didn't frighten me in the slightest but the participant's of the video certainly had the willies put up each other 👻.

If matters concerning Borley rectory, the church and the reported phenomena appeal to you, I would recommend listening to the radio documentary from the early 1970s featuring the investigator Geoffrey Croome Hollingsworth among others. It can be found on YT. Forget all the other silly films, this is on a different level.
But don't listen to it alone.....

What's the harsh punishment the monk and the nun had to face for their true love! I am always confused about Christianity which offers forgiveness one another. Anyway, I thought that ghosts would often visit PPL who have strong feelings about paranormal power as those families experienced. Do you or Yhana have those unique powers? Now, who is/are the victims of those unrested souls? OMG, Stephen, "Halloween" is around the corner. I decided to turn my porch light, so nobody will visit my house including those lost souls. LOL. Indeed, Yhana is about 5cm shorter than you, a big brother. Yhana has whose eyes? Well done. OMG, you are a really and truly professional story teller.

She is the light in my life. (She is my brothers daughter)
She is very shy on camera, but if given a camera and left to her own devices she actually does a wonderful job.
I think her eyes though, come from my side of the family. Her eyes have an Eastern European look about them, Poland is where my paternal grandfather came from.
We are actually visiting Poland over the Christmas period.
I do believe in Ghosts, and I think we are both sensitive to them.

I think I would have done so too, although as I was growing up, I did live on a haunted house. You smell lavender around the house and every now and then pictures used to shake on the walls. We were all afraid of the house lol 😂 catch up soon Donna
