It makes me wonder how many crossroads across the UK include burials that have long been forgotten. That small crossroad was probably the most eerie. As it was so isolated. I think it's such an interesting aspect of women's history in general. I also never ceases to amaze me how much history is hidden everywhere in England. You had me looking for witches in Hertfordshire!
Thank you buddy and I agree. The Salem Witch Trials do over ride other areas of the witch trials, even though many hundreds more were executed in the UK then in America. I think books like ‘The Crucible’ had a big part to play in that. Hertfordshire had its fare share of witches - Jane Wenham comes to mind. My direct ancestor Susanna Aylott was actually one of her accusers. I can imagine there are crossroad burials in Hertfordshire too, it’s just a matter of hunting them out. Only recently did I find out about this significance of crossroads. References were made to crossroad burials in song and story over the years, even in America, but I didn't understand them. Ultimately, my understanding is that if you couldn't afford a proper burial, you would likely be buried in a pauper's grave, but if you died in disgrace (e.g. as a criminal), you would be buried far away from town at the crossroads and not even be afforded homegoing rites.

I live very close to these burials and it’s known by all of the locals. The church I was sitting in, is at the top of the lane leading down towards the smallest of the crossroad burial. This church is covered in witch symbols etched into the stone. Essex has a fascinating history, it’s just not often told. Catch up soon guys 😊😊

Such tragic times with the so called "Witch" times. Sad too about the suicides. Even today, so little is understood about cognitive disease and depression. Tragic time and yes sadly prejudice still exists today. While most of us don't cause physical harm, some do. I'm afraid that it always will exist. Why, because we're human and have our own flaws. I think this is sad, but tragically true.

Such tragic times with the so called "Witch" times. Sad too about the suicides. Even today, so little is understood about cognitive disease and depression. Tragic time and yes sadly prejudice still exists today. While most of us don't cause physical harm, some do. I'm afraid that it always will exist. Why, because we're human and have our own flaws. I think this is sad, but tragically true.
