I don't play drums. How do you figure out which cymbals to hit? Obviously hi hat and ride are pretty clear, but for the expressive moments and fills, how do you decide that?

You asked me this exact same question years ago and you didn’t like my answer lol
Cymbals have different pitches, it’s just like hearing different notes on a more melodic instrument. There are no rules, but a right handed player on a right handed drum set will typically set up smaller, higher pitched crashes on the left and bigger, lower pitched crashes on the right.
