  • I spent a week photographing and wearing these new watches from Erebus and I thought it strange that Jody and Stephen had sent me this model again to re-photograph for their website
Turns out this is not the original Erebus, its the new 38...I knew there was something different about this..but it took me a week to figure it out..I definitely need a holiday
    Link to website: erebuswatches.com
    Thanks for watching..

On multiple occasions Jody mentioned his love for the Helm Vanuatu it was no surprise to me he was inspired by that watch when designing the Origin. Depending on the colourway there are some Pelagos vibes in there as well. The design features certain vibes of said watches, but I don't mean this as a negative. It was basically designed as a crowd pleaser and I like it.

That tone of the pink dial reminds me of the 80s - when neon tones were in vogue.
It with the silver bezel is the most captivating and quite possibly my favorite color way.

Don't know how I missed this video when it dropped... but so good to see all the colours.
It still blows my mind how 41mm seems to be "too big" for so many people. I've got 7.5"/19cm wrists, and have always thought they were pretty small compared to guys I know. Maybe it's cos they're fairly flat rather than round, but the 39mm (49.5mm lug-to-lug) field watch I just built looks sooooooo tiny on wrist.
Anyways, great vid as always 😎

These have a similar sense of simplicity to the helm but this is very quintessentially Erebus. It’s not a copy by any means. Some people would say it looks like a pelagos and some would say it looks like an angular sub. No one’s wrong but they shouldn’t be derogatory or rude about it.

It’s not rude to point out that these look like so many other watches.
It looks so close to the Helm that at a glance you wouldn’t notice.
My issue is that if anyone else did it, they wouldn’t get anywhere near as much publicity.
Jody has been in the watch world for a long time but that doesn’t give him a pass to make essentially a copy.

The Helm Vanuatu is a good looking watch but I don’t like the brand for their artificial scarcity tactis, so I am super happy for Jody for stepping up and try to fill the void for folks that don’t wanna be in a waiting list. And is nobodies fault that some fellas have skinny wrists, thats why they offer 38,36,34 mm.

This watch is so darn good. I bought at the release and had on the wrist for the last week.
Great for my wrist size, the h link bracelet is about perfect. I am ruined now with the quick adjust and taper.
These are just great. Likely thicker than most will like, but very seiko thick and tons of water resistance.

I have what I consider a smaller wrist, and I have the original Origin, and its a perfect size. I also have the larger sized Bulova lunar pilot, and fits fine as well. Same with the Seiko Arnie,
all of these are considered huge watches especially the Lunar pilot and Arnie, but the seem fine on my smaller wrist.
You see a number and think oh its huge, but unless you actually try it on and see for yourself, you may be pleasantly surprised . Jody got it right the first time, This smaller one, you ask and sometimes you receive.

Honestly, I think that if they could source a relatively high accuracy quartz movement I would buy this watch.
I know the NH35 is proven, but the inaccuracy puts it in the same category as basically everything else. I high accuracy quartz movement with this design, really high quality build and finishing would be the perfect every day tool watch in my opinion.

I don't see too many similarities between the Helm Vanuatu and the Erebus Origin. No more than you see between most dive watches. What is the same - rectangular lumed indicies? except the Origin has a double indice at 12 compared to the Helm's single. The bezel notches are cut differently, the bezel inlay is completely different. The hour and minute hands on the Origin are pointed compared to the rectangular hands on the Vanuatu. The seconds hand is different. Yes, the share a stainless steel case, like 90% of divers do. The lugs look different. The crown guards look different. Internally, yes, they share the same bland NH35 movement like so many micro brands - but that isn't visible. The Vanuatu only comes with 1 dial choice - black, compared to the rainbow of colours available with the Origin. You are taking a huge, unjustified, leap to say the Origin is in any way a copy or homage of the Vanuatu.
