I love how this included the commercials from back then too, what a trip down memory lane! thanks for posting this and putting in all the work of recording, converting to digital, and effort that that would've meant.
Honestly thought the reveal would just be another magic trick where he finds a way out of unmasking. But the end was pretty epic and at the same time cute how he talked about the thing he loves.
Yeah, his speech in the end was quite moving. Genuine and sincere. It did leave a memorable impression of someone who lives for his art. This is how any great show should end. What an epic way to walk off stage!
valintino was gunned down outside the studio by david blane and criss angel... amazingly the bullets passed staright though him. found out how he did it after the commercials
If you want to skip straight to the *#reveal* (which you shouldn't, as this show is _awesome,_ even presented in this old tv recording quality, complete with tracking lines (and if you know what _tracking lines_ are, we can be friends)), go to *52:31* 👍🏻
Not only the magicians entertain us, but they put their lives at great risk for doing so. Imagine that a magician could be crushed to death or sawed into half or roasted alive if there is a slightest mechanical error. Or if some pissed-off assistant decides to just "spoil" the trick. At 12:09, what if an assistant got a bit more excited and ignited the fire only a few seconds earlier than planned. Or what if the switch that (6:15) flips the seat got stuck or malfunctioned. Or is rigged by an assistant. Magicians really place very high trust in their assistants to pull off these dangerous tricks. Even if their magic tricks are revealed, they still deserve a LOT of applause for all the risks they take to entertain us. I must add that in many (most?) of the acts it is the assistants who take the risks, so equal respect for them as well.
Exactly, we should watch magic shows as we would watch stunt performances, as even magic performers risk their lives in performing dangerous tasks as part of their illusions. Rather than being concerned about the "secret", we should watch and appreciate their "performance" in these shows. Respect to all the performers who perform these mind blowing illusions with such grace and finesse, to the point that they trick our minds into believing the unbelievable.
True before i when i watch magicians performing magic with out revealing any trick just made me amazed but after i watch Val Valentino the mask man makes me love more about magic. Thank you Val Valentino.
True, it inspired me to practice my sleight of hand, so that I could pull off the small tricks at dinner parties or meet ups with friends. It would just be so cool.
This is one of the sadder moments of my childhood. I loved magic and watched it a ton as a kid (my parents hated it lol,) and these specials were amazing because of the darkness, mystery, and education that comes with it. Granted it's very controversial and I see why Penn and all the others hated it but it makes it more fun. That being said the unmasking of the magician really came out of nowhere and it broke my heart as a kid. IDK why but I spent so long imagining what he'd look like and once he did it it took the mystery away. They probably shoulda never revealed it; it woulda kept the mystery alive for longer. This is the re-airing; it aired before Halloween 1998. This looks to be January 2000. Thanks for this! Nice to see again :).

what a great series. and I was losing interest in magicians but this series defiantly did rekindle my interest and forced magicians to create bigger better tricks
I think there’s two different versions of this show, this one and another. This one being Valentino and another one has a different guy who’s bigger, moves slower and more mysterious, has a different mask (same design but not as bright) and has different assistants
This is what the original broadcast looked like. The audio and visual distortions were caused by the combined Eldritch incantations of every working magician on earth in a desperate move to prevent the broadcast.
I never got to watch these when they were originally aired, because I was hanging out with someone very special to me from the Summer of 1999 through late Spring of 2000 before I got with my son's Mother, and made the mistake of letting that special lady I truly loved "disappear" I am glad I found these episodes on here so I could watch them.
So there are apparently only 4 original episodes of this. I seem to remember as a kid this was shown almost weekly it seemed, in like a Sunday Prime Time spot. It was like they would show the repeat of the previous special several times until the next one came. Anyone else remember this, I was like 10, is I dont remember very well

Did he really do any harm? It's not like he was putting our national security at risk. Everybody knows there has to be an explanation about how those tricks and illusions are done. The magician's assistants have to know, stage hands have to know, after all, they're the ones doing most of the work. Over the years thousands of people had to be in on how that stuff was done. I think the real purpose was really to push magicians to raise the bar and be more creative, and they did, eventually. Instead of putting people out of work, I think this series may have actually saved some careers. Penn and Teller, Copperfield, etc, are all still around. Illusionists today are exponentially better than ever.
What good is a career if one dabbles in the satantic and occult world, or has that Luciferian Selfish mentality like some.of.those so calles magic ppl. Those fellows are not happy magicians like the ones who work tricks.at tables for youth or restraunts, those beings are not good.

Valentino was not THE masked magician. In the last recorded segment @52:33 when the smoke came on he was replaced with Valentino that had learned how to move and gesture like the real masked magician. So there you have it, now you know the secret behind the secret.
The whole reason behind that smoke trick is that they had to use a lot of Make up to make the mask look good on him, specially around the eyes you would need lots of dark make up. So they had to come up with a trick to make Valentino look "clean" after pulling the mask. Thats where the smoke & video edit comes in...

Every version of a major magic trick that this guy "reveals" is like some bargain basement version of the real thing that we see the actual pros do on TV... David Blain when spending 17 minutes underwater didn't have some assistant holding onto the back of his neck with an air hose running down her arm, and the "reveal" that this guy did of how levitation is done used a friggin electromagnet on the end of a fork lift hidden behind some sketchy wall behind the magician with a fixed camera angle.. Bro, the pros on TV have been doing levitation tricks without fixed camera angles and without any hidden equipment behind nearby false walls or anything for years now. I don't understand why this guy keeps using these bargain basement hack versions of these major tricks to "reveal", because the difference is we can figure out half the time how this dude is doing his version of the tricks before he even tells us how they're done but you can't figure out the more advanced versions done by the real pros on TV. Bro, Chris Angel, Dynamo, and any of the other pros on TV are levitating people right out in the open on a sidewalk or in parking lots with the cameraman walking 360 degrees all the way around them to show there's no fork lift behind a wall or something stupid like that, where the camera angle would have to remain fixed for the trick to work like in this dude's 30 year old version of the levitation trick. This guy is "revealing" like the 1970's versions of all these tricks which are so outdated.. Show us how you do levitation out in the open with no fixed camera angles or equipment behind hidden walls, or how about you reveal a serious mind bender trick like how David Blain was able to make a woman's watch appear in the window display of a closed jewelry store on the street and then simply hide his hand behind a piece of newspaper while he literally reaches through the solid glass window into the store display to pull her watch back out for her through solid glass. Why don't you ever reveal any of these more modern tricks that are truly hard to figure out, rather than these 30-40 year old versions of tricks that no one even performs anymore or does in that way?
Even Dynamo uses undercover assistants to help in his street tricks. They all do. All illusions that are not just sleight of hand - require pretty elaborate setups. The real trick is to make the audience think otherwise. And that's where performance and experience come into play.
I'm against what the masked magician did in unveiling the illusions. While at the same time if you have no intention of wanting to know the workings of these effects, don't watch. It's the same principal with books. If you don't want to know what the book says, don't read it
He did it to flush out all the old hack magicians that were doing the same tricks for years. He just wanted more innovation for the art that he loved and he wanted people to get interested in magic.
The science and the art of "magical" illusions is more fascinating than any particular trick. It's worthy of study by psychologists and philosophers. What did you REALLY see and what did you only THINK you saw ? I personally can see interesting parallels between stage magic and the truly dark arts of political propaganda, distraction, misdirection, forced perspective razzmatazz is all there
I remember as a kid turning on the tv every night hoping to see this show. most of the time it wasn't on, but when it was, what a treat that was!
