If anyone is wondering why Gabe keeps glancing left and right, it's because his Heavy-esque physique means he needs to be on the alert for enemy spies.
When I was starting college back in 2009, wanting to be some kind of digital Artist, I emailed Gabe asking him for tips for what I could do to work for a company like Valve one day. He actually responded and put me in contact with Bay Raitt, who gave me some very brief pointers on where to start. It would still be killer to work for a company like Valve one day, it really seems like an environment where bouncing ideas off each other is encouraged; and I imagine it leads to some amazing stuff.

At this point he owes it to us. Not because we deserve it but because he wants to crash back in and pretend this never happened? No he owes us an explanation of whats been going on at this point
Leaving a beloved franchise on a cliffhanger after multiple promises of a follow up for so so long- then creating a new game and not shedding much light on these many years previous- does create questions, no? But he has said they made mistakes and it’s clear HL is back on the menu so let’s see. I think it has been troubling him and this is finally a kind of vindication. I have a feeling Alyx is more than just a prequel given some of the hints. We may learn some long sought answers after it’s release and in the coming year or two. Alyx has been basically wrapped for months, I doubt they’ve all been Just resting
Lol right I rolled my eyes when interviewer said that. Gabe had literally just mentioned BCI which is next level stuff n it gets ignored to ask him about the damn past.
@CallOfCody he owes us nothing, he gave us Steam, Half Lifes, Portals and also CSGO was originally mod from Half Life..... so considering what he gave us, he owe us nothing.
I think it's amazing that he fully admits Artifact's disappointment without hesitation....that shows a great leader right there, someone who's actually able to admit mistakes and push forward with that knowledge.
Let's be honest, you would have to be a really delusional person to argue about Artifact's 'success'. This is Gabe Newell, a guy who reinvented gaming and made billions out of it. He's a smart cookie and he has nothing to prove to anyone anymore.
@@wellbi agreed, I just found it admirable that he straight up admitted it in an interview. I don't know many game devs that would publicly acknowledge disappointments like that.
@@wellbi tbf, look at people like Randy Pitchford who still tries to preach that Colonial Marines was a success, or Todd Howard who defends Fallout 76 and its $100 subscription. Egotism and an underserved sense of self worth are extremely common among game dev CEOs and team-leads -- GabeN seems to have none of that.
@@AngryAlfonse The difference is that people like Todd Howard can't go off script and say whatever they want about the games that he represents. He just works for Bethesda; he doesn't own Bethesda, he alone doesn't get to decide when Bethesda will give up on FO76. Another thing is that Artifact tanked much harder than FO76 - they could have made it work but Valve with their 'no bosses' policy just isn't the kind of company that can do a card game.
Hearing Gabe talk about artifact gives me the impression that Valve *was* listening, but just didn't know how to approach community transparency again until recently.

Derflerp One of the many reasons why Valve has everyone’s utmost respect in the industry, they didn’t reach their titanic status without such a critical mentality
@ Not gonna lie, I do take a bit of pride knowing that Valve is based about 30 minutes away from me. Not like it reflects on me in any way, but I suppose it's preferable to having EA right there.
Valve listens, they have just outsorced everything but development - this means anything that's not coding/art/sound is not valve employees. Valve makes code (steam, games, etc). Valve is also a private company and don't have to do anything they don't want to do. So while they are "doing something" the people we are talking to aren't exactly helpful because they aren't the same people. Gabe cares greatly about his company. Everyone needs to just chill.
Imagine the amount of feedback a normal developer gets for their game (just look at reviews, steam forums and other forums dedicated to a game) and then multiply that by a thousand or more and you'll start reaching the levels how these companies like Valve get feedback. Of course, everyone thinks their feedback is critical and informative and helpful but just the sheer amount of it is so much that even a dedicated team would require a long time to go through all of it, organize it, see what is actually helpful and what is not and then somehow try to crystallize it into a form that is usable to the developers. And then you get to the developer level where they have to share their time between working on a product and going through the feedback and then try to see if and how to implement the feedback into their process and eventually to the product itself - not to mention rounds and rounds of testing after the fact.
27:15 That "Go ahead" from Gaben to Rob felt like a father telling his son to take the leashes of his company. He sounds so proud of what Rob has accomplished and must be seeing himself back when he had that developer fire in him when making HL1.
Interviewer: “Do you think we need to band with technology so it doesn’t overthrow us?” Gaben: *brief flashbacks to Portal lore, GLaDOS, and neurotoxin* “I think it’s complicated...”
Will-In-A-Million well it is. It all sort of depends on who is the creators of the next generation of intelligent AI systems. Technically they can’t do what we don’t program them to do, but what if we program them to learn and interpret? Then the question becomes HOW do they learn and HOW do they interpret?
@Adam J. Harper That's kinda the point the guy makes with his question. Elon Musk and many others believe that is what will happen if we blindly continue advancing AI and that we should be looking to improve ourselves using technology instead. If we can map the human consciousness and transfer it into a machine without corrupting it, we can bypass the limit of our biological brains. Of course there is the chance we get a GLaDOS, but there's also an equal chance we get what happens in Transcendence. We can't program an AI to start with the knowledge of the most important things, if we could it would be simpler to just map and transfer an existing consciousness. If we build an AI from scratch, how do we teach it subjective concepts such as human morality? There is no way to do so effectively without a childhood state of mind but even then we could not keep up with the speed at which an AI thinks and learns. Every single mistake would be cemented into the AI's mind before we have a chance to correct it and that will affect the way it thinks. To me that means a much higher chance to fail and end up with a homicidal robot army that wants to wipe humanity off the face of the planet. TLDR: Build AI = 90% chance of Skynet | Build GLaDOS = 50% chance of neurotoxin, 50% chance of Caroline retaining control
You guys should watch Robert miles, he explains AI safety problems really well. But yeah essentially the idea is that the AI will do exactly what we program it, but what we program might not be what we really want or meant.

14:50, in which Gabe Newell-esteemed video game developer and CEO of arguably the most important company in all of PC gaming history-said that he'd been playing Bloons Tower Defense in 2020.
My favorite part of this video is when they're asked about the future projects, and Gabe just looks at Robin to answer the question. I can only hope that I work at a company that puts it's employees first in this manner.
I appreciate Gaben's honesty and pointing out their previous mistakes like the Steam Machine and Artifact. We need this kind of transparency in gaming nowadays.
There's something so nostalgic about him saying his email address at 2:34. It's like happening across a song on the radio you haven't heard on almost a decade.
"We don't just crank Half-Life titles out because it helps us make the quarterly numbers, we deliberately avoid that constraint on how we approach stuff" Also that statement about Steam being just a set of tools for other people to use as they want, as they know how detrimental it can be to have outside funding, just so refreshing to hear.

Finally Valve is delivering. From what I've seen from the videos, they will not disappoint. Finally.. A huge thank you from the bottom of my heart as a concerned citizen. Please do make more. We'll be waiting, as we've always been.
To be honest they don't deserve thanks. Everybody around Half-Life have been straining at the leash for years, waiting for a single word from Valve and they've said nothing. Most of the staff responsible for Half-Life 2 moved on. Most of the community have moved on emotionally. Fans have literally died in the interim waiting for news of the next Half-Life, and they've given them absolutely nothing. It's an incredibly shitty way to treat people who made you what you are.
NolePtr: Company called HMD Global wants to make cellphones that are connected to your brain Computer interfaces, they also want to build those interfaces :) might be scary if it's used in military but not that scary if somebody volunteers for that and everybody uses them in future, might be sad though when internet crashes and your brain is online uploading updates, or maybe they don't need updates, the interface in brain learns just as your own brain learns

they've been avoiding this question for years. They dont want to do a large scale game production anymore is my assessment. Alyx seems to be a relatively small game in comparison
Problem with Zeus is... He care more about Money, then making Games, people really want to play... Like HL3. Whey do you think, Valve have not make a Game worth talking about in 10+ years.
It’s a shame that Robin Walker wasn’t called out in the credits. I think he’s just as interesting as Gabe Newell, although perhaps not at the same level of celebrity. I absolutely think Robin Walker deserves to be mentioned in the title and description, and I enjoyed listening to his insights.
I find it interesting how the interviewer kept asking Gabe what seemed to be for him "unpractical" questions. Gabe practically didn't respond when he asked him if he reflected on his past, he said he focus more on the present and the future. Then he asked Gabe about the AI apocalypse and he eluded the question completely, and focused on what can be made, speaking about brain interfaces and technological advancements which give us practical things. Which makes me think that Gabe lived to this day a life centered on the futured and focused on the practical rather than the unpractical thinking. Which isn't bad at all, you need these to thrive on such an industry an position. But what interests me the most is that he isn't a "braindead" utilitarian guy, he seems more than capable of capturing and embracing the valuable things. For example he was very honest about Artifact, which is a trait most corporate-minded people wouldn't think of. It's so fun to analyze such a "revered" by the community person and come to realize he's a human being after all, like all of us, we might have our differences but we all come down to this, trying and struggling to be ourselves in life. Thanks for everything Gabe, I hope you the best on your future endeavors.
I agree. Also interviewer could've asked better questions. Console question was asked as complete bait. I wasn't surprised to hear this question since IGN is mostly console focused outlet. And Gabe perfectly dodged this bait question. Instead of questions like this, time would have been better spent with questions like what they think about Black Mesa and their Xen remake, especially since they think Xen was mistake.

@Digital Electronic Creative Or they just chose to put out a game that was not complete because they thought the fallout ip alone would be enough for people
I don't know Todd Howard personally, but I bet if he didn't had a bunch of investors he has to answer to, he would probably accept that fallout 76 is not what the fans were expecting, Valve is privately owned and Gaben is pretty high up in the hierarchy thus giving him more freedom to speak his mind. it's just different circumstances Edit: when reading Bethesda my mind immediately jumped to Todd Howard probably because of him being the spokesperson for Bethesda my bad, but still at a company level Bethesda studios answers to Zenimax in addition to investors

Not really a bad thing, its different, thats for sure. Theyre basically a collection of smaller indie studios / teams, so for example, theres a team for TF2, theres a team for CSGO, theres a team for new hardware etc.., afaik, employees can jump from one team to another without hassle (thats why, for example, TF2 might have 14 people working on it today and 4 just next week (though TF2 probably has like 0.5 right now lmao)) these teams might work independently of eachother, or help eachother out or whatever. And thus, a person can go into the lab, put some guns in, port a hl2 map and realise "Hmmm, this would be very fun as a game" and then people might agree with that person and a team is born. Obviosuly, GabeN would probably know about this, but considering the fact that his job title is more "Dota player" than "CEO" I wouldnt be surprised if that was not the case.

I love him so much for that! Portal 2 is, in my opinion, Valve's best game overall. @@Toripusutashi Valve wants to not look at the past and just look into the future now since they have changed for the better.
@@wellbi way easier said then done my dude. Seem so easy to just acknowledge failure, but most game devs can't.
@@TheDrewker You have Finnish Last name?

Interviewer: “Do you think we need to band with technology so it doesn’t overthrow us?”
Gaben: *brief flashbacks to Portal lore, GLaDOS, and neurotoxin* “I think it’s complicated...”
If we get Wheatley I’m happy
Also the combine using neural implants to turn humans into mindless soldiers
You guys should watch Robert miles, he explains AI safety problems really well. But yeah essentially the idea is that the AI will do exactly what we program it, but what we program might not be what we really want or meant.

Damn, he’s aged as though people have been heckling him for 2 decades about HL3
Well the better part of it, yes
He deserved it... Admit it!
Gabedalf the gray has become gabedalf the white
but everybody have beard these days, even me, and I had eyeglasses too but I lost them somewhere, but which age is GabeN? Btw I think people get minus vision from Computers and plus vision from oldness, so I guess GabeN is not even old yet. He just looks like one
GabeN: Shutup it's only been .......... 12 years
Alyx really is a great move from valve, they alleviate the pressure to make a new half life game without the risk of inevitably disappointing over a decade of hype of half life 3
27:46 - Gman passes by behind the glass at Robin's back while he talks about the future of Valve. Half-life 3 Confirmed.
Where's his suitcase though?
Gman wouldn't put his hands in his pockets
Time Mr. Newell? Is it really that time again?
Taking external money, "Something they're helpful, sometimes they're the death of your company" *Cough* Blizzard *Cough*
Unfortunately Blizzard wasnt owned by Blizzard for far longer than after Activision acquired them.
Blizzard isn't dead lmao
Honestly i love Gaben so much, he's honest, hardoworking and respects his customers. What a wonderful human being
scams you with CS:GO cases tho ;)
But still no Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Or even Half-Life 3.
"respects his customers", what a joke

Also GABE: Sandals
At least without socks
Why not? He's looking fine)
@@beardedghinzu yes but we call that the gaben effect, imagine if anyone else did that
@@gadhanumberone2254 nobody would care?
A layed back style.
Man, this was eye-opening. It really, REALLY isn't about game development or making money for Gabe anymore. It goes way beyond that.
And I love it.
When they rebelled against directx its kinda stopped being about the money.
Paving the way for gaming
@@danis8455 Rebelled against DirectX ? Valve's Source games use DirectX on Windows (GoldSrc games like HL1 and CS1.6 use OpenGL or a software renderer). id Software is a better example, as I don't remember a single id game that uses DirectX.
Let's be honest the lord makes so much from micro transactions and game sells he dont have to care anymore.
@@winterwyvern4993 He doesn't have to care, true, but he still cares. His company is always working to improve PC gaming, after all.
That's one hell of a company. They told the CEO, that they're working on a new game.
Andrewik lol
No wonder there's no Half Life 3, no real direction.
@@cookieface80 But on the other hand Gabe for the past years made the case that there needs to be something groundbreaking technology or graphics wise for HL3 to be justified. So it's not that there's no direction for HL3, it's that in this one instance Gabe is actually hell bent on sticking to his guns.
SlovakThrowback - Danny Video starts: „Gabe Newell - Dota Player - Valve“ *glitches* „Gabe Newell - CEO - Valve“
Because Gaben has his arms behind the chair, he literally looks like he’s being held hostage with his arms tied behind his back
HAHA
Or he's still working on Half-Life 3 BEHIND his back!
GIVE US L4D 3!!!
Why I laugh to this
LOL, to me he looked more like Pablo Escobar in his terminal days with that super cool beard + flip-flop combo.
I’m impressed he managed to not touch his beard at all.
i want his beard!!!
Are you talking about the interviewer or Gabe?
Looks like Santa's got his jolly back.
2:29 hearing him utter these words so closely to how he says it in the developer commentary bubbles and just in general about Half-Life again makes me unbelievably excited.
why does the background music sound like all people in this video recently passed away tragically and we're remembering them now by watching their last video?

Gabe Newell: the enigmatic oracle of modern computer gaming.
an actual interview with Gabe Newell? i guess the beast has finally awakened after his long slumber.
Awankened lol
After epic store trying to shake the throne the beast must awake to show them who's the boss!
the Gentle Giant
And boy does he look like a beast. Absolute unit.
I'm gonna go "awank" to some HL:A footage later
Gabe calling artifact a disapointment was pretty epic.
27:18 Gabe knew that Robin wants to now make more Half Life, Robin didn't know if he's allowed to say it.
The fact that he quotes John Wick already makes him even cooler lol
"Gabe pick one between Half Life 1 and Half Life 2"
Gabe: "Portal 2"
i died
timestamp?
When talking about valve's legacy they showed all of them, even artifact, except TF2 :(
I don’t think they talked about CS or Left 4 Dead.
@@zachyaninek2658 to be fair though left 4 dead is even more forgotten than tf2 is by them
but tf2 still supported by them. Did you guys even remember ricochet ? they never talk about it
@@yumirak TF2 is not being supported by valve. Right now there is a game-breaking exploit that botters have been abusing to DDOS every single valve server. The game is actually literally unplayable. Valve hasn't even released a statement, and it's been a problem for over 3-4 days.
@@verisimuli The lag bot issue has been patched.
I really appreciate the honesty from Gabe about the flop of Artifact, makes him (or Valve) so much more sympathetic.
Yes be loyal to a corporation lmao
@@SonOfHubris quite the opposite actually, the corporation is loyal to us
Why do people act like Valve should apologize for a game they released? It's their stuff, not yours, unless you worked on it

He looks at the people around him instead of the camera.
@@drumer960 Yeah, though I wonder if it was necessary to tape an intern to the ceiling...
7:52 He's talking to you EA, Ubisoft, and Activision...
"whats your favorite, half-life 1 or half-life 2?"
"portal 2"
I love him so much for that! Portal 2 is, in my opinion, Valve's best game overall.
The Half-Life series is a huge leap forwards in gaming, but Portal 2 with its story and gameplay is so unique, and it really bears Valve's signature game design...
It's a bit sad that Portal as a series is most likely abandoned at this point, but it doesn't really need a continuation, and it will go down as one of the most important games in history!
@Greg B Valve is way more flexible when it comes to multiplayer games, but in terms of single-player experiences, Portal 2 is definitely what I would consider a masterpiece.
Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are revolutionary.
@@XeZrunner Portal wasn't abandoned.
The story ended in portal 2.
@@saricubra2867 Odd choice of words by me there, yes, it has ended there. I don't really wish for a continuation of the story, but it would be interesting to see them use the Portal mechanics again :D perhaps in VR somehow, without motion sickness?
@@XeZrunner I mean, if F-stop is ever finished/released at least we'd get more lore from the Portal universe(which is also the Half-Life universe), even if there'd be no portal gun Chell or GLaDOS. Still some cool unique puzzles and hopefully a lot of Cave Johnson, though.
seeing this video makes me feel some kinda joy. not only has it been a while since we saw him, he also looks so lively. i had go through all of his videos for a thing i was working on and seeing all his videos at once in chronlogical order makes you realise how much he had detoriated and how tired and done he looked through the years. now, he's back and happy and rambling on about things he loves and it's so great
he really gives me vibes of the kind of people that i refuse to believe exist but do somehow
19:36 That’s a fan animation and not source 2.
EDIT: IGN have since edited the video and replaced the CSGO fan animation from Lichtenstein with the Underlords trailer.
IGN is a joke.
Looks like Unreal Engine assets.
Yeah i don't think updating an engine changes a map's textures and automatically adds more objects
I cringed at that part.
It also look terrible imagine trying to play CS with that visibility.
When you have enough money to develop a full fledged AAA game to test the waters.
