you can't run. you can use launch commands to make the walk speed faster but there is no way to switch between walking/running, you are always walking.
Alyx was my first VR game. It felt so natural and I really liked the controls, however I noticed what you noticed almost right away. I found myself using a combination of continuous motion and teleport to "run." I thought it was kind of weird that there was no run or faster continuous motion. However after finishing Alyx and moving onto Boneworks, boy let me tell you, the run option in Boneworks makes my stomach turn. So I now appreciate my movement speed in Alyx.
I played through continuous motion on my first run of the game then shift teleport on my second. Surprisingly I actually found my second run (the shift teleport run) to be alot more enjoyable and immersive in a spacious room scale setting. I actually found myself moving alot more physically in real life because I'd actually make the small movements irl such as side stepping or approaching objects, rather than simply adjusting my ingame position constantly with a joystick like a traditional FPS.
@Jake the Astronaut I don't know anything about Artifact, but I'd bet the main reason it was DOA is because of the expectation of something bigger, i.e. a new Half Life game. If not for that, it might have done better than it did. Knowing Valve, it's probably still a decent game on its own, it's just not what anyone wanted.
@@adxo yep, definitely do not watch any half-life content until you play it because the spoilers are everywhere rn... I was lucky to play it one day after release.
The locomotion is very good. It makes it really fun to apply on-prop-standing knowledge in VR. I just throw a propane tank, move onto it mid air, and then just stay in the air while propane tank falls. I do this about 20 times and I’m flying!
Guys. we can't forget that maybe, they don't want to, not out of disrespect, but more respect, I imagine so many people at Valve knew Rick, and maybe they don't want to talk about him, it's a sad, depressing thought that you lost someone to something they couldn't control one bit, I imagine even Gabe is having a hard time getting over this, so don't, stop trying to make them do what we want, let them, Valve, humans like you and I, do what they believe is their best idea, if they make a video to honor Rick, then they will, if they don't, then it was to hard to handle and it's early for that I think, let some time pass, I can't imagine they don't care, that would be ridiculous, but remember that it's always hard to talk about losing someone, so let them take their time, if it never happens, then it doesn't, And if it does, it does.
every time i moved more than a few feet a time i was begging in my head for a sprint action or even just an increased overall movement speed. ended up having to use the "jump" as a teleport especially during fighting cause continuous is just too slow in those moments
Yep VR devs are still fullly tone def to that fact that ACTUAL VR GAMERS. Don't need all the hand holding BS they keep forcing into games. I get they want it for the noobs, That is fine. But for gods sake why do all the most high budge VR games have to act like no one can handle movement??? It isn't a problem for actual VR gamers.
I only have two complaints, Valve. We need a dedicated flashlight button and an option to sprint in smooth locomotion. Otherwise the game's a masterpiece and those two things are only minor inconveniences.
4:58 I learned that I had to crouch once I reached the level with the all of the washing machines. I freaked tf out and tried to get to "high" ground and naturally crouched as I tried to teleport on top of a machine.

Open world games are boring shit since GTA5 come out, i can’t even finished that game because it’s fucking boring, nonsene storyline. Don’t know why people get hype for those boring shit games like Cyberpunk 2077. Graphics and gameplay don’t even look that good.
It was sad to see beloved franchices like Mass Effect go open world and lose all the well paced, crafted and continiously engaging linear story telling that they used to do.
There are some great open-world games out there, but that quote is objectively false. I was never a big fan of open-world games, until I got into The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Assassins Creed, Borderlands, etc. Games like those are prominent in the open-world genre. Although those games are great, there are a lot of other amazing games out there, that have a more direct way of storytelling, such as Doom and Half-life. Personally though, the open-world genre is just another river flowing into a sea of games.
This game has been absolutely incredible for both myself and my 12-year-old. I made a super short video of him playing it on my channel. Thanks for putting so much into this game, it's given us some awesome memories in these weird times!

I love that player height is an aspect of this. As a 2 meter tall guy, many VR experiences feel 'off' - because it's built for smaller people. It's fairly uncanny and can make the scale of things become absurd, and almost comical at times - even though the game is intended to be serious.

I would really appreciate a deep dive about optimization. This game runs incredibly smooth on medium, and very well on high even when using minium specs. The game still manages to look incredible as well, and even the lowest fidelity settings hold a candle to most AAA games. Would love to know how they did it!
@@runninggames771 Isn't that the point of a developer commentary? To provide insight instead of entertainment? I mean, I barely used any of the movement options stated in the video but I still found it interesting.
I believe it comes down to the dynamic resolution system. The game engine watches your frametiming and increases the rendered resolution on the fly to make the game look as good as possible while keeping you at your headset's target framerate. You can notice this especially when transitioning from indoor scenes to outdoors. Things will blur slightly as the resolution is bumped down to keep your framerate stable due to the increase in lighting, rendered distance, etc of being outdoors. This also means that people with lower end systems will have the game scaled down to be able to run smoothly on their systems. On top of that, Valve has done wonders with the lighting and shadows system and made them look phenomenal while not causing as massive of a hit to performance as other games would.
Wtf valve going silent for 13 years and then coming back with this masterpiece. I didn't play it but I want a vr headset to play this. The best thing about the locomotion in this game is that you can do both continuous and teleport. I have it set to shift locomotion, but the left stick still will do continuous. It's a little thing but it makes a huge difference. I probably wouldn't feel ok doing continuous all the time, but it's really nice to have it as an option during fights or to make fine adjustments.

This is such a wonderful breakdown!
Please make more of these!!
Hey valve, can you please keep up the communication? This was a nice streak, please dont let this be a flash in the dark
Doop™ this is completely how I feel
Interesting. I'm getting Half-Life:Alyx today maybe, so it will be quite interesting to see how it goes. I'll try shift teleporting first.

Guys. we can't forget that maybe, they don't want to, not out of disrespect, but more respect, I imagine so many people at Valve knew Rick, and maybe they don't want to talk about him, it's a sad, depressing thought that you lost someone to something they couldn't control one bit, I imagine even Gabe is having a hard time getting over this, so don't, stop trying to make them do what we want, let them, Valve, humans like you and I, do what they believe is their best idea, if they make a video to honor Rick, then they will, if they don't, then it was to hard to handle and it's early for that I think, let some time pass, I can't imagine they don't care, that would be ridiculous, but remember that it's always hard to talk about losing someone, so let them take their time, if it never happens, then it doesn't, And if it does, it does.
F
I love that you can peak around stuff! Great work!!
The continuous looks a bit slow. There should have been a sprint feature for continuous movement.
every time i moved more than a few feet a time i was begging in my head for a sprint action or even just an increased overall movement speed. ended up having to use the "jump" as a teleport especially during fighting cause continuous is just too slow in those moments
It isn't a problem for actual VR gamers.
the game wasn't design for fast movement, beside you still can teleport in continuous movement option for faster navigation
@@srt7248 If the game was not designed with fast movement why can you move rapidly via teleportation?
I'm pretty sure we'll be able to change this with a console command soon.

"The future of gaming is open-world games"
Me : **Laughs in half life: alyx**
Open world games are finally dying, I hope. They were never a particularly good type of game in the first place, bar a few exceptions such as Morrowind.
@@mvnkycheez they arent even dying
There are some great open-world games out there, but that quote is objectively false. I was never a big fan of open-world games, until I got into The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Assassins Creed, Borderlands, etc. Games like those are prominent in the open-world genre. Although those games are great, there are a lot of other amazing games out there, that have a more direct way of storytelling, such as Doom and Half-life. Personally though, the open-world genre is just another river flowing into a sea of games.

Probably would be overly technical and not very interesting to watch.

And yet they didn't realize how brutally slow continuous can feel relative to the other modes.
@Whatever for some its really not a bother, i play h3vr on the absolute max movement speed because its more efficient and doesnt bother me, would love to see a similar feature in hl:a. i can understand for some its nauseating but a controllable option would be amazing
@Whatever NO, any good VR game these days lets you run. Valve just cucked out to all the VR noob babies that they assumed would buy the game. And fucked over the VR veterans. Real VR players HATE teleport trash, and there need to be a NORMAL mode that is just like FPS games for the actual VR players. But Valve badly fucked up by basing controls off the VR noob players. YOu can't even just or fall? Is this game for my grandmother?
Does Valve not have ONE actual VR gamer testing their game??? No VR Veterans like or us teleport. It is considered noob garbage. And Valve has stupidly forced everyone to use it. Since they don't want you to run, jump, or even fall??? Give me a fucking break. It is like a VR game from 2 years ago that is soooo afraid the player might feel movement?!?!? VR noob garbage in such a high profile game is disgusting. Real VR games don't want any VR noob trash "comfort" garbage forced on their gaming experiences. EXCEPT that Smooth Locomotion is slow as molasses. Please give me a run feature. I know I'm not the only one asking. Literally every review I've seen from a reviewer that used Smooth Locomotion, has mentioned that they felt like they were too slow when they wanted to move quickly, and wished they had the ability to run. It's one of the very few issues I have with HL:A, but it really sticks out like a sore thumb.
