GOOD VID !!! keep it super simple and show us ALL, we are ignorant and really appreciate your effort. Helped me a lot. We are having the kids over and rigging up our salmon rigs tomorrow . Cheers. PS, dropping lead not great BUT it is common practice for those who do not have nor can afford downrigger. You just keep showing the simple stuff for us novices so we can enjoy fishing too.
@@ReelNinjafishing I'm getting a boat, so I've been looking up options, obv an electric downrigger is like $500 bucks, but there are "poorman downriggers" that use a planer, with a similar line clip and don't drop lead in the ocean. There are also manual downriggers for pretty cheap, under a hundred bucks. This video is a cpl years old, have you tried the different ways of getting deep?
Good ideas, and good questions. I recently picked up on a good deal some small Scooty downriggers, but I have not installed them or used them. They are the small hand crank ones, and I also bought all the accessories at the grand opening of Fishermans Warehouse in Fairfieid. I usually use a salmon release and drop the ball. I am doubtful that I will get to use my downriggers soon as I am a full time medical student. But I have fished with downriggers. The nice thing about them is being able to set the depth, not loose lead, and you can stack lines. I have never tried planer boards. If you have the time and money to invest in downriggers I think it would be a great way to go. I got 6 and 8 pound lead for my downriggers. Nice thing about that is you don't loose the lead. I know the government has a lot of people freaked out about a lot of things. I don't particularly subscribe to that. It's a drop in the bucket. Lead comes from the earth, so... I don't personally see it as a problem to use a salmon release. To each their own. It is effective. It gets the job done. The other thing I like about it is less stuff on the boat. But we shall see. Like I said, I haven't used my down riggers yet. I think downriggers are very good and usefully for a number of reasons, but if it comes down to it.... I'll use a salmon release. Congrats on getting your boat. I hope you have a great time. Sorry if I couldn't answer your questions better.
@@ReelNinjafishing I feel you on that, that used to be how I felt. But lead isn't in it's pure form in nature, and tests have shown lead rising in fish and waterfowl because of fishing weights and shotgun pellets. Better safe than sorry imo. Plus, like you say, less shit in your boat. I've been looking up the planers and a lot of people use them, you can also use paperclips and rubber bands as a release so you don't need to reel it in each time.
I use that exact same flasher - size & color it seems to outfish all the other color combos - & Ive got them all (at least for the inline ones). There is another very similar green/yellow Vs. green silver also very productive. Croc spoons - red scale fished at 30-35 pulls ALWAYS works in the warmer months & the fluoro pink with the grey scale pattern on it for early morning dark conditions also awesome spoon. Got all the other colors but these 2 always catch me kings. Cant beat an anchovie though. 1 last tip the captain of C gull 2 out of Emeryville Donny or Danny, showed me. Anchovie straightbait ldr behind flasher. 4.5 ft line then sm black swivel then 1.5 ft of line to anchovie. That swivel keeps the role of the bait nice n tight - easier target for fish to hit than 1 rolling in a big arc. Tie all my ldrs this way now. Very gd tutorial.
I think the brand is Big Al's. I use a 4 inch - it's sort of pyramid shaped. I use the chartreuse and silver UV, I believe... I also use one just like it in like a pinkish hologram and silver. If you pause the video when you see them, you can get more details. Sorry, I'm not sure if I am remembering correct, or exactly what they are. Thanks for asking. I hope that helps.
To answer your question, it is not illegal to use salmon release. Lead comes from the earth. I don't see what it hurts to drop a ball. It's not like the fish eat it. Obviously down riggers is another way to fish. Thanks for your comment.
Reel Ninja yeah I know lead is from the earth. Same as mercury and lithium. It’s just a plain waste of money and harmful to use your method. With all that gear you own you would think you would own a downrigger and teach responsible fishing practice.
I like using down riggers. But this isn't a down rigger video. I fish on a lot of boats, and not all of them have down riggers. I understand your concern, sort of. In some ways I don't. The lead drops to the bottom and sinks into the sand or whatever, or it gets completely wrapped in a layer of stuff. Fish don't eat the ball. The ball won't really emit anything. If you have a different point of view, please tell me. And again, it's not like it is illegal.
Reel Ninja I never said it was illegal. The point is it’s a foolish way to fish. That’s it. That’s the point. There are better ways to show people how to fish than this. Yes it’s not a downrigger vid. I get that. I think you have some great knowledge in your video. This is the second one I’ve seen with the welp you will never see that lead ball again technique. To me it’s just not the best way to do it or teach it. That’s all. I did however enjoy the rest of your instruction.
Yeah, I like down riggers a lot. To me that is a better way to go too. But I appreciate you talking to me about it and check out the the video and stuff. I don't know you, so I'd like to ask, are you fishing on the west coast also?
Yeah. Balls run about $5 - $8 each depending on where you get them. You lose a ball per fish. The most I ever lost was 3. 1 on a short fish and 2 on keepers. Down riggers are expensive too. Either have to use balls or down riggers to get the bait at the desired depth. I like to use down riggers, but whatever it takes. Balls work good too.
I have not used it personally but I know a guy who is a very experience angler who uses it successfully often. I would definitely use it with confidence, however, my go to bait is an anchovy on a salmon hook.
Reel Ninja thanks! Yea I like stuck bait top. Last weekend we caught on an apex as well as stuck bait. Might just throw out an apex hoochie combo to see what happens. I know anglers fish the hoochies at lakes and stuff, just didn’t know if it works in the ocean.
Hey bud. Just want to let you know this method has been working. We have gone out 2 times already and have landed split fish between bait and apex with a hoochie, have landed about 14 salmon between the two trips (not all have have been keepers). We got into a good Pacifica run a month ago and will be headed out this weekend along rocky point. I still personally prefer the stuck bait after curing but apex with hoochie has been working. It’s a good fail safe if you run out of stuck bait or your baits start getting mushy. Anyway thanks for the tip.
Sorry for a super late reply, but no. I have never used lead core for salmon trolling. Just a salmon release with a 2 1/2 lb ball, or on occasions I have used a 2 lb or a 3 lb ball, or my favorite, down riggers. Down rigger work the best, You can really put the bait where you want it with down riggers. Most of my salmon fishing has been done with a salmon release and 2 1/2 lb ball. And it works great. Not as precise as a down rigger, but very good.
Thank you. I have new ling cod and rock fish videos coming soon. I'm working with Kustom Kraft next week. We have a series of new videos coming up. Thanks for watching. Stay Fishy!
Hey, where do you get those "salmon trolling hooks" with the twisted wire attached to the shank. You talk about then at 3:20 in the video. I can't find them anywhere. I can see in the video you have a pack of them from Pline but when I go to their website I can't find them. If anyone has a link to buy them off the internet that would be great. Thanks!!
Outdoor pro sells them (just the hook) theyre called straightbait hooks 4/0 or 5/0. You make the wire twists. Malin brand stainless wire..021 inch thickness is the 1 thin enough to flex while fighting salmon. You want to invest in jewelers pliers the ones with the conical ends (5 or 6 bucks) to bend the wire fwd end for the loop b4 twisting the rest. Feed double tag ends through eye after twisting the wires together to appropriate length & wrap tight around shank 4 times minimum nice & tight w regular pliers. You want to size your desired length alongside the bait you buy (recommend tray bait vs the bags of bait - cleaner baits less scale damage but a little more $ - pick the cleanest packs you can find in the freezer. CVS even sells them. Probably a video on making them somewhere. The key is having that barb close to the belly (less visible) AND CENTERED under it.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching. Have a good safe fishing trip. And of course, "Stay Fishy."

Hi brother. Are you still using this leader set up you learned from Capt Donny
Teach a man how to fish and he will buy enough gear to let someone else retire.
what flasher you recommend?

Thanks for the education. I never troll for salmon before and this video answer alot questions for me.
That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. Why show people how to drop lead in the ocean. ?? This is not the best way to rig for salmon.

Cliff Ryan Fong, thanks. Yes. Coochie mamas work good. My favorite colors are watermelon and cop car. Thanks for watching.
I really enjoyed your video. I found it very informative. Thanks a lot for putting it all together
The end is the best 😂😂 great video
So you loose the ball every time? Doesn’t that get expensive?

@@ReelNinjafishing I see, to each is own I guess. I just don’t quite understand fighting a 10lb fish vs a 10lb 6oz fish you know?
U got a new sub here luv the ending ahahahahahah 🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽😂😂😂
