  • If you like this content and want to support you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at the suggestion of a comment from this very film: ko-fi.com/lizchadertonartist
When I wanted to get monetized on UA-cam, I watched all sorts of films trying to work out what I might expect to earn. There were huge channels with millions of followers and they earned millions of dollars, but what about a small art channel? Would I ever make any money or would I always be doing it for the love of watercolour (I would probably still do this if I earned nothing, but something really helps!!). It was hard to find information, so I thought I would share how much I made in 2023, in case you are thinking of building your channel next year.
I got monetized in June 2022. I am an artist in the UK and my channel is all about watercolour. I had been on UA-cam since 2010, but only to watch. I uploaded one film in 2013 and did nothing more until 2018. Then a few in 2019 - mostly about artwork or exhibitions. Well 2020 struck and I started making films for my art class students, as we could not meet during lockdown. I realised more than my students were watching and I go a few subscribers, but as a New Year resolution I decided to upload a film every week in 2022 and to try and get monetized. I did it in June and from there the channel has gradually grown. 2023 is the first full year of monetization. I uploaded 77 films, got 50000 likes and one million views. I now have 34,000 subscribers (which is irrelevant for the amount you get paid). So what did all that mean I got paid?
If you have any questions, I will try and help. Just leave a comment - I read them all. I made a follow up film with lots of answers to questions, as this film got 30,000 views in its first week. You can see it here: • How much did UA-cam p...
Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?
If you want to have more in depth courses please head over to www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk. I also run a friendly Facebook group: / watercolourstudiowithl... .

ha ha, actually to be fair, I'm a middle aged crone, sitting talking to herself, shivering, in a shed, at the bottom of the garden, while it's raining too hard to run back to the warm house, talking about watercolour. But that was a bit long winded!!!

You’d be surprised. There are 1000s of these types of videos. Many UA-camrs are quite happy to divulge their earnings as they’re very proud of having been able to produce really good content. Indeed…these type of videos themselves make them a lot of money because everyone finds these details fascinating. 👍🏼

UA-cam Shorts are more like making advertisements for you channel, only you don't have to pay for your adverts to be shown. I've started following several channels which I came across through UA-cam shorts. So it may be worth your while doing an abbreviated version of your video and invite people to come and watch the full version.

I am interested in learning from down to earth, talented people, with a sense of humor, to boot - people like you! I think you definitely deserve a lot more. This year, I purchased your beautiful book, Painting Animals in Watercolour, and I think it's so great, filled with your practical advice and great "tips and tricks". Thanks! What would I like to see more of? Any animal paintings tutorials, maybe outdoor/wilderness sketching (vs. urban buildings), and any advice on organizing your materials and your time, etc. I don't need any more art supplies, but I appreciate how when you review a product, you usually do a demo painting. I like your honesty about the financial aspects of having a youtube channel. UA-cam is not a favorite of mine because of their policies, so I watch only a few select channels there. Including yours😄. And I think you deserve every penny that you get from them. I heard that on rumble you can earn more money per view, but the audience on that platform is smaller. One thing I do like about UA-cam is how creative people can share their interest with the world and those people interested can connect. Congratulations on your achievement, I have learnt a lot of stuff from you and other UA-cam channels, so I’m grateful for you presence online! You are very generous teaching us and I think you tube should pay more to the content creators that are teaching something, because it is almost altruistic work, given all the time and effort it takes to do it.

Hi Liz, this came up on my home screen out of the blue! I am guessing because i have viewed UA-cam monetisation videos in the past. Brilliant video. Informative, clear and best of all interesting. Good luck and am guessing this will be your largest earner by quite some way 😊 btw am hopeless at art and have no interest in painting myself but I did purchase a painting by a winner of Watercolour Challenge 17 years ago 😂

Extremely interesting video. I do subscribe to to the château diaries, they also make lots of money , and it’s all used to support the chateau and do all the renovations on it. It’s been going years, and it’s just like watching friends ,I best love the times when they go out to the charity shops and antique markets ….. they buy fabulous things in these places…. If people take the time and make these videos , they deserve every penny ,because it takes time and patience for our pleasure ….. 👍👍👍👍

People tend to search in patterns. Phrases like "How to" and "Step by step" target those people. Multiply that by the content of painting or other areas people are interested in, and you end up with a video like Urban Sketching. But if too much thought is put into it then you can end up diluting the value of the video. Because another factor people love is that a content creator is real or genuine in their efforts and not commercializing everything.

I’d try just maybe taking some of the shots you already have of yourself painting and speeding up in Timelapse to make a bunch of easy shorts to sort of advertise your own channel. I really think that a lot of channels just make shorts to up their subscribers. Maybe as you make your videos think of parts you can use in the shorts. Great video, very informative! Also maybe reach out to producers of products you ❤and use for some kind of sponsorship deal

Thanks for the transparency on how YT works for you. I bet this one really zooms up the stats. People are curious. I understand how older vids can jump up in stats. I find someone new (like you) and I will binge watch ALL I can find by that Channel. On art & crafts sites, I will watch some over & over, like when I want to do that project. I do comment more often now & even watch some of the ads for my favorites because I know between those & the likes, it helps them out $$ wise. It also helps pull the old vids back to the forefront. Do I want to do it? Nope! I feel I'm good at what I do but don't feel a weekly video would suit me. I commend you & others for their dedication & sharing your talents.

However, I am interested in watercolor and art, and I like the way you talk (I will not subscribe to any UA-camr who says "um," "uh" or "like" within the first minute; perhaps harsh, but I have better ways to spend my time), so I am subscribing. I had no idea how much UA-camrs make (or don't make), so I can't say I'm surprised by what you revealed. But now I understand why every UA-camr tells me to subscribe at the end of every video.
