A quick clarification on ATX 3.0 and ATX 3.1 cables - i.e. the 12vhpwr cables and 12vh-2x6 connector. My understanding is that the actual cable is the same. 12v-2x6 is more about a new connector on the GPU side. So having an 'old' 12vhpwr cable will be fine as long as the GPU itself has been adapted accordingly (which, AFAIK, all recent ones have been). This Corsair page discuss this a bit more: www.corsair.com/uk/en/explorer/diy-builder/power-supply-units/does-the-hx1200i-platinum-atx-30-support-12vhpwr-12v-2x6-connectors/?

Good video! A couple of additional items everyone should be aware of is that PSU cables are NOT interchangeable between different manufacturers or even different models from the same manufacturer. Always keep your cabels in the original box to avoid problems.
Also, I like the use of two cameras, but you may want to complete your thought facing one camera before turning to the other camera. Try using the second camera only for tangent remarks.

Many thanks for the comment, yes it's definitely worth remembering not to try changing your cables and 'mixing and matching' them.
Heh I appreciate that - I've wanted to try the two camera approach for a while, but am still getting used to it. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

This is a perfect video, especially if you are new to PC building. To prevent using the wrong cables, I recommend using a paint marker. I apply an easy-to-see color on the ends of all cables that ship with a PSU.

Thank you.. The main ATX cable had me onfused.. You have the large connector to the motherboard and then the seperate 8 pin "long cabled" connctor ..because the 8 pin cable was long and "very seperated " I thought that end plugged into the 8 pin CPU.. it made more sense to me the way the cables were designed (but I wass wrong).. glad I watched your video.. big one to the motherboard the other two to the power supply.. and a seperate cable for the CPU. Thanks again !!

Thanks for the summary at the end regarding 3.0 vs 3.1 I was wondering what that was all about😀 Very good info on all the connectors and uses, and as such a good video! I can add some historic context for the molex. It's not really relevant these days, but anyway. Before Serial ATA, there were Parallel ATA (really wide cables/connectors). Both disk drives and optical drives were connected using PATA cables and for they used exclusively the molex connector for power. For even older PSU you would have a weird little connector at the end of the molex cable to power the floppy drive 🤣 Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the detailed comment, glad you liked it. 🙂 Ahh that's pretty interesting re the connector at the end of the molex cable thanks, how times have changed! It's kinda funny how molex feels 'old' nowadays, but it did used to be a pretty useful cable type to be fair.

Hey everyone, do you have a newer (ATX 3.0 or 3.1) PSU out of interest? To be honest it's not really essential unless you have a very recent NVIDIA card.

Appreciate the video, pretty clean info 👌
Now, as future 4080 Super owner (or maybe a 4090 one, not that sure, my setup is designed to be 4080-90 compatible without having to redo everything), and as an actual 1070 owner, I have A LOT of questions regarding to the power connectors (understandable, I'm from Argentina, this upgrade equals more than 1 year of full salary alone, one step in the wrong direction and boom, an entire wasted year).
Will an ATX 3.1 PSU "magically solve everything" thanks to its new standard featuring a slightly safer approach? Apparently the main reason behind everything getting melted down is either due to blending things too much (which sometimes is almost impossible due to for example the size of the case relative to the GPU, your case might not be that big for a 4090, who knows) or due to a low power PSU (basically some 750W thing for a 4090, don't even know if that's possible, but think it's risky). I get one can simply go for a 3.0 ATX and make sure you're not blending things too much (I guess?) and making sure you're really connecting the cable to the gpu (the zero gap issue).
So, is a 3.1 PSU a justified purchase compared to a 3.0 ATX? With a 3.0/3.1, would one still make use of the famous "adapter" 4090 and I think 80 too have? Do you also need to separately buy better cables in order to be more safe, or can one simply use the ones coming with the card? Thanks again in advance pal!

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite  5 місяців тому +1

Thanks pal, glad you liked it 🙂 That sounds like an awesome upgrade - congrats to you for saving up for it and taking a nice, well-researched approach to it. I hope all is going okay in Argentina.
Those questions definitely make sense. I would personally go with an ATX 3.1 PSU and use the included 12v-2x6 cable - this would be better than looking at a separate adaptor cable IMO, and probably safer than using the one with the card too. However after buying the ATX 3.1 PSU, you could always email the PSU or GPU maker... or post in a subreddit like /r/nvidia.. and just get everyone's views on it (to be 100% safe). Better safe than sorry as you say.

@@TechOverwrite Thanks for answering so quickly pal 👍I'll wait some months before making any move (Argentina is one of those countries where things drastically change due to random events from month to month, prices can literally go up or down 50% in a week).
Regarding the ATX 3.1, it's difficult to find one (even harder for a "good" one) without buying it abroad, which is not an option given the double price and lack of support (again, Argentina ._.' ), but maybe the next months some new models will be available, my only concern now is that apparently not every RTX model seems to support it at all? I've read somewhere that newer 40XX models do support it, but older ones don't. Apparently this is also not advertised due to costs in terms of packaging (aka "too expensive to change the package, meh"). The PSU I was considering to buy so far was the Corsair RM1000E (didn't find a 700-900W model here sadly).
Will look for more videos on the subject, as said before, you explain things in a pretty clean way, and it's pretty informative too, noticed you have many videos covering AMD CPUs, I'm also interested on that 🤔 (specially since I wanted an i7 14700 build, yet noticed lots of red flags around the 13-14 gen of intel due to way too high temps, will check if you already covered all this drama around intel CPUs)

    • @TechOverwrite
      @TechOverwrite  5 місяців тому +1

@@NikoBellicXDS ahh that makes sense, sorry things are still in flux in Argentina 😞 Yes if you can't find an ATX 3.1 one, then it wouldn't be a major deal-breaker, but hopefully more so come out in the coming months yes.
It's a pity with Intel. I would ideally like to use them because they have QuickSync which is great for video editing, but right now I'm avoiding them too. Hopefully they can improve soon and we can have more competition - especially about the Zen 5 launch was less than expected.

      As far as i know
You dont even need a atx 3.0 or gen 5 specific psu.
If your psu has 8 pin pcie/cpu socket combo, and say you want to run a 4090, you only need 2x pcie cable that has 2x 6+2 pin on the mother board side. So total 4x gpu connectors.
If your psu has the 6 pin pcie socket to connect the original 2x 6+2 pin cable to the gpu, you need 4x 6 pin sockets from the psu itself.
You also dont need any special 12vhpr cable from the psu to gpu.
The standard adapter from the box of 4090 is all you need.
You MUST make sure the connector is seated properly on the gpu, and that you line up the adapter straight up vertical without any bend on the adapter at all. Only the pcie csble from the psu, you can bend and ziptie it to the case. That way no stress from the adpter connector to the gpu.
Vertucal mount the gpu is best here......

@@kalleankaa7536 Yes I know, thing is I'm from Argentina and a 2K USD PC for us is equal to a 4K PC for Americans or Europeans lol
(So basically you do NOT want to accidentally break anything)
Due to this I wanted to literally just pay some more to get a newer PSU with 3.0 or 3.1, to make my life a bit easier lol (guess I'm buying the 5080 instead of the 4090 btw, so far it seems like the 5090, while 2x better, will cost 3 times more lol)

Can I use the pigtailed cord WITHOUT the pigtail, alongside a single other 8 pin connector cord? You were the first person that I saw not to use the pigtails from... But I dont think I have two pure 8 pin cords...

Hello. I recently bought an XPG Core Reactor 2 850W Atx 3.0 power supply. In this case, would it be possible that it is not compatible with the future RTX 5070ti or 5080, since they may require a 12V2x6 input? I was planning on getting a 5080, should I be worried? :( Thanks

Hello, thankfully you will be fine :) The 12vhpwr cable will still work fine with the newer 12v-2x6 cards. Basically it's the female connector (e.g. on the GPU side) that has changed. The cable itself will still be compatible with it though.

Ah good question. Yes that would be fine too - I didn't end up covering this in the video, but PSUs like from MSI have that useful "12vhpwr" slot - but using MSI's own splitter cable is fine here, it's still delivering enough power (and it's from MSI so it's much safer than some random no-name cable).

Sorry to hear your cables aren't fitting, is that presumably because it's a SFF type PSU but maybe it's in a full size case? Either way, I agree that some of the Corsair replacement cables are confusing. No worries, and you're right that you don't need it... but I also agree that ATX 3.0 did introduce some extra features, so it might offer a tiny bit more reliable/stable power delivery in some cases. The difference to end users would probably be negligible though to be honest 🙂

Is the port itself that you plug the 12VHPWR and the 12v-2x6 cables in the PSU the same? Meaning if I have an ATX 3.0 PSU can I just change my 12VHPWR cable to a 12v-2x6 cable and get all the benefit of ATX 3.1? Thanks.

Great question, I wasn't too clear here. The actual cable itself is the same (and I worded things badly/got it slightly wrong in this video) - my understanding is that the actual cable is the same. 12v-2x6 is more about a new connector on the GPU side.
