- It was a tough day out on the river. Cold, wet, and not too many bites. Steelhead fishing can be a grind at times but thats what makes it fun! At the end of the day, I decided to try something new and it payed off big time!!!

I have only ever caught steelhead on rooster tail spinners in the Hood River in Oregon. My brother and friends always used salmon eggs for bait.
Amazing no other fishers just off a major road and bridge and lots (?) of fish. Wine country, not fishing country?? Bobber fishing. lots of slack line! Silver Flatfish was a great steelhead lure 50 years ago.

Good job with the spoon. A couple of observations that may help from a log time spoon fisherman. First, re rig that spoon with a split ring on the nose right to a quality barrel swivel and lose the safety snap. They will open up and you'll lose the fish's. Second, move more to find fish. You fished same spot all day. I'd work that hole from top to bottom in 30 mins with a spoon. They go to the next run or another spot. Then maybe come back later. Bank fishermen who move a lot put themselves in front of more players and you'll be more successful. Cast, swing, retrieve, then take 5 steps down river and cast again. If a fish is there it will bite. I also like to use a split ring to a small barrel swivel to a gamakatsu big river hook on the tail end of the spoon. Increases hook ups to hang the hook back a bit. Finally, the opposite side of that hole looks fishy but it also looks to deep to properly present a lower weight spoon. Try a half once or two thirds to get deep fast and fish that water... Then retrieve a little faster to keep it up on the end of the swing.

Steelhead fishing is like running a marathon. Always a grind-it-out affair, but the reward is awesome! Way too many trips ending empty-handed! (which makes the successful ones special!) Nice video!

Spoon fishing for steelhead is the only time I actually think a baitcaster makes a significant difference. Highly recommend giving it a try, it really allows you to control the drift, let more line out, get it closer to the ground, etc. all mid drift. I’m sure there’s some UA-cam channels that have covered this, but seriously as someone who has caught hundreds of steelhead I think it’s a game-changer that I didn’t take seriously until I saw it in action.
Also hardware in general, but especially spinners, tend to select for the bigger and more aggressive fish in a run. I’ve caught only 2 in the 20 lb range but both were on spinners.
What size spinners are you throwing?
@@TheFishingCrane 3 is usually the sweet spot. 4 can be good in fast rivers known for big fish, but I’ve never had any luck other than salmon with 5. If it’s deeper than ~3ft, maybe move away from bell body and more toward torpedo profile to you can stay in the strike zone. Otherwise bell body is my favorite in shallower water.

Absolutely. Forgot to add that I don’t usually start with hardware because I catch more fish overall on beads. I sort of use them to “play cleanup” when other things aren’t working, or later in the season when the rivers are chock full of big wild fish and the hatcheries have mostly cleared out.
Not sure if it’s the best way but it’s worked for me.
@@shorecasted9295 How heavy of a spoon do you usually use for steelhead? And what brand? Because I know baitcasters generally work better with heavier lures. I also have a baitcasting setup for lighter lures (bfs) but it probably wouldn't handle a big steelhead that well lol.
Have you considered learning to use a Baitcasting reel. Get the right rod reel casting setup for Steelhead and Salmon you will significantly increase effectiveness in many drift fishing techniques. You also will feel better control especially with bigger fish. Spinning definitely has its advantages in certain applications, but it's good to have both. Get a LH quality in 200 size like a Daiwa Coastal 200. You can use a 100 if your not fishing bigger rivers, but a 200 if bigger fish bigger water. You can do it all one hand and extend your drift without flipping and closing your bail. I enjoy watching your videos and how your experience grows. Thanks and Fish On 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🎣
If you look up the regulations for this river you'll see barbed hooks are allowed and a few others as well

My biggest steelhead was 11 lbs Trinity river on a #4 Mepps
Was able to get one on a STEELHEAD SLAMMER , spinner. By far the best, salmon/steelhead, spinner out there. But hey, they will bite anything shinny 🤙🏼

Try the riffle upriver just above sailor bar. I like a three way swivel, three and a half to four foot leader, size 2 hook threaded with a night crawler. then a six to eight in. dropper too a slinky weight. For metal I like 1/4 to 3/4 little Cleo chrome / Blue. Slinky weights are nearly snag proof on the drift. Get an assortment to adjust for the speed of the current.
gets pretty crowded there, right? I haven't fished for steelhead yet but I've seen pictures and videos and there's a lot of anglers fishing around there.

I use flies and a combo of a fly with a bead 2 inches above the fly. I really kill steelhead on submerged flies.

At 74, I want to tell you that you shouldn't sell yourself short when it comes to opportunities on the water.
I am still an active fisherman like my father, who fly fished into his late 80's.
The same drive that inspires just one more cast is the same energy that keeps us going just one more day.

You've got to know Northern California's rivers and start looking at area bridges, satellite images, etc.. If you're lucky, you'll identify it. I did................Just haven't gotten over there and wet my line yet. Looks like a great place.

I always try and cover a stretch of river if possible and not stay in one place all day. Anyone know the river? Didn't notice any drift boats.
Yes, fish were in the area so I didn't move too far.
Not super important to keep hatchery fish wet. Would have been better for that river system if you bonked that fish and threw it in the woods rather than releasing it. Another nice video tho!
