I’d love to see somebody remake rogue and call it rogue-like
pixel dungeon or shattered pixel dungeon is basically the same from what i can tell
I played Rogue as a kid on my Commodore 64. The first Roguelike I played is called Nethack. There is still a small thriving community that hold Nethack tournaments throughout the year!
Aw man my comment got ripped.
I was gonna say modern roguelikes include Caves of Qud, Cogmind, Ultimate ADOM, and shoutout to Cataclysm: Dark Days Aheas, and Quasimorph.
Also because maybe it was too long, Nethack and Angband were both like Rogue remakes, and Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is a bit of an upgrade with tiles and more mechanics. Shattered Pixel always felt flat or missing something IMO. Not random enough maybe because of small floors and the bosses?
I'm gonna be honest I'm pretty sure that's how they got their name
23:12 "why is there a rattlesnake" honestly ive been asking that question my whole life. Like yeah lets evolve this great sounding dohicky onto a bitey bitey danger noodle, seems like a great plan there nature
Since you can never go back up, and things get stronger each floor, its generally best to full clear if you can
This actually has the best graphics of any game because the environments and fights are rendering in my imagination.
Nice! If you get the hang of Rogue and want something with more content, NetHack is a direct descendant of Rogue (by way of Hack), but with character classes, pets, spellcasting, etc. There's an isometric graphical version of NetHack called Vulture's Eye that might look better for UA-cam than the standard tileset.
YESSSSSS I can't explain how much I love that you're doing this. I found Rogue by accident on MyAbandonware and started playing it as a joke and I genuinely had so much fun
If you want a classic, but more aproachable experience I recommend Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. You can get decently far just with the "tab" and "o" keys
Shattered Pixel dungeon is also a good one
ADOM is really cool too, they have a version with nice graphics on steam
Big tip; there are a bunch of character packs people have made, free mods, and they let you get actual visual representations of what you are dealing with, plus can spruce up the scene a bit, helps to make it a little more modern eye friendly and sanity friendly
Where would one go to get stuff like that?
this was super cool dive it would be cool if you touched on crawl stone soup or NetHack as well for a episode NetHack especially with a visual addon really holds up to today
It even says in the wiki at the start of the video that this came out in 1980 not 1985, lol. Anyway, I first discovered rogue like 10-15 years ago and I still prefer it to all rogue-likes. This has to be the best game you could possibly hope to make with like 50kb or however small it is. It took me a month or two but eventually after figuring out every nuance of the game and creating a plan of attack i was able to beat it without save scumming. Such a fantastic, tiny little game. This was a fun video even if you did everything wrong, lol.
Cool to see you take a shot at it ha. If you ever try again remember doorways are your friend, you might've made it out of that last fight if you 1v1'd everything instead of them attacking from all sides.
Woah. Your thumbnail was so different I actually missed this one for a while. I didn't realize it was your video at all. What an epic thumbnail though, I had it on my watchlist :D
Rogue is a game that is designed to be learned to be beat. The more you play it, you both have more success, but also have less to learn and its an argument on whether it is less or more fun over time.
Epic funny leet number at 19:13 lol.
Glad to see somebody actually trying original game. It was a genious in it's simplicity.
the crypt of the necrodancer vibes are strong
its the turn based stuff. execpt you dont got turns to the beat
I loved Rogue. I had it on my first PC as a kid, and my version was corrupted so anytime a monster hit you it was pretty likely to crash, so I couldn't actually play it properly til I got the internet. I'm old 😅😢
Maniacal laughter is 'Scare Monster'
That art looks so cool
speaking of traditional roguelikes
you should play shiren the wanderer, the mainline games in the mystery dungeon series and see how you like it
I love seeing someone play og rogue xD, if you are interested in theis type of roguelike but with more content behind it i would encourage you to play DCSS or dungeon crawl stone soup. Its one of my favourite games and it even has mouse support.
Surprised I do not remember playing this one. Reminds me of Castle from 1984, great game as well.
My first Roguelike was Angband. It's what I majored in during high school. Theres a town!
I also played MUDs. Anyone else remember MultiUserDungeons? They were text based MMORPGs. DragonRealms was by far the best. My best friend's older brother literally spent years in a basement playing DR instead of going to college. So addicting.
My brothers and I played Feudal Realms (a smaller mud). Honestly crippled our social development with that addiction. That said, so many fond memories of that era...
I adore Rogue. Put a stupid amount of hours into it on my Mac Plus (B&W, no hard drive but 2 floppy...one had the OS the other had the application you wanted to run). Ain't gonna deny it, I was waiting for you to run into an Aquator (especially after getting 2x +1 armor scrolls).
If you ever feel like playing again I'm happy to give you some tips & tricks (the version I played had secret characters, curious if yours has the same).
Super cool idea to play the OG.
This game is still pretty awesome despite the clunk and lack of modern polish, but man, its just as hard as i remember it seems haha
Woah, I just recently mentioned Rogue in one of your videos and went to see if anyone made a playthrough of it on YT (there were not many people, and no one big).
Brogue has to be my favorite classic roguelike. It's pretty, easy to play, has some of the best map layouts in the genre, and allows so much clever problem solving!
But yeah, Rogue is still legit pretty fun. Check out Oryx's Classic Rogue for a quality remake!
you should play more traditional roguelikes
Absolutely wild seeing this and immediately realizing that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has just been Rogue the whole time
you should play the first rogue like game you have played
I need to see you play Shattered Pixel Dungeon
Its gonna be very interesting to see how often you die before you get used to the game overall. It's straight up insanely difficult, but with a really realistic learning curve.
Pokèmon mystery dungeon is the most rogue like roguelike i know.
Yup!
hi olexa
please check shattered pixel dungeon.
its an awesome classic roguelike with modern graphic and sound design.
it is also free and open source.
This is truly the grandfather of Roguelikes. I am glad that the old games are getting love.
Not a roguelike though it's it? It's actually rogue. It's like saying "this is just like an apple" while eating an apple.
really cool idea for a video mr olenky
"is rogue a roguelike" is the new "is 1 a prime number"
Ah yes, the game shown in literally every single video essay about roguelikes
This is so like Pokémon mystery dungeon!
Leaving gaps in the dark room walls though, specifically just to irritate us? 🤣
What cool, new rogue-lite
I loved this video!
you missed a tinted rock
God mother fuckin damn he's playing the og!
And next Olexa is going to revisit Caves of Qud
Rogue is cool!
Actschually, rogue isnt a rogue like, as its rogue. its not like rogue, it IS rogue
As someone who has played Improbable island in the past I also assume that things denoted with an L will be lions. I am also in constant fear that all other things will be lions as well. Sneaky bastards.
Might I reccomend rogue fable 4 on itch
Feels like waz hack tried to be this.
We like Rogue
Never seen you play load roll die, or knight die
hm im now remembering a rouge-like thats around mechines or stuff... what was it
Cogmind I assume.
Very cool
did you ever play pixel dungeons? I don't know much about classic roguelikes, but pixel dungeon seems like the same as OG rogue with easier controls to grasp
So +0+0 longsword can still be better than some +1+1 items, you need to know what the base stats of each item are
This being the first one is not a Roguelike... It is the rogue that the 'likes' are referenced to.
Can you call it rouge"like" if it's actually rouge?
As soon as you go to the middle left your "join the discord" pop up covered exactly where you were. Bad timing on that man.
19:22
I could not care any less about this, it’s a less than 5 second pop up
Wow 😂
wait a second
Like number 777
Pixel dungeon in ugly lol
It’s a 40 year old game lol
netHack
Makes me feel grateful for modern games lol, but we must pay respects to our digital forefathers
God, another roguelike with "rogue" in the title. Can't they come up with something original?
