Duet from Royal Opera Covent Garden presentation of Mozarts "Die Entführung aus dem Serail". Belmonte - Deon van der Walt, Osmin - Kurt Moll. Conductor - Georg Solti
My Father sang this Aria You could hear him 3 blocks away. He loved Moll and as my Father said The most powerful voice if it’s a real Basso As my Father said if the voice doesn’t ring it is not a voice. Squillo
Ah, Moll... Astonishing as always. The ease with which his voice travels through the melody and switches so seamlessly between registers will never cease to impress me. The melody is very beautiful as well. Sometimes I wonder what path would Mozart’s development as a composer have taken had he lived longer. I think he would’ve made beautiful things
Nikolaus Harnoncourt considered Mozart to be the first of the Romantic composers, and there is something to that. In the operas at least, from Idomeneo onward, there is a new depth of richness to the orchestral writing, as well as psychological acuity in the portrayal of the characters. Certainly Don Giovanni is a strong archetype of the Romantic anti-hero, like Werther or Chateaubriand's Rene. E.T.A. Hoffmann also considered Mozart to be a Romantic.
Ok, I admit my ignorance. What opera/aria is this? Lohengrin O, you always assume your followers are as knowledgeable as you...obviously not the case here! 😝
I quite often forget the opera and the aria I post as a title... my aim is for you to enjoy pure music experience without letting your mind interfere with thoughts like: Ah I know him... I had seen him some years ago... he was this and that... So, it is not a test of knowledge, opera should never be a test but a Virgin Experience of pure Music
Probably too late but it's from "Die Entführung aus dem Serail", more commonly known as "Il Seraglio". Hope it helps. Just like every other opera composed by Mozart it's a masterpiece, full of very potent and capable baritone characters. :)
It's from Die Entführung aus dem Serail! It's the second (4th actually, if you consider recitativo's) scene, after Belmonte's "Hier soll ich dich denn sehen, Konstanze!".
Moll is incredible. He jumps from register to register like an acrobatic double-bass player, with no hint of strain or discomfort. Deon van der Walt sounds good, too; a shame we don't get the remainder of the duet in this clip.
This is so beautiful, listened to this more than 30 times in the last week! Such a pity that we won't have any new recordings of either of these artists. Thanks for sharing this

Dearly missed! His singing here is glorious! All his notes have definition and resonance...

Greatest Tiefer Bass of all time. Bar none.
Habe ihn live gehört. Zum Niederknien. Eine der besten Bassstimmen, die es je gab!
It sounds like a romantic era ballad, not a classical era aria. And incredibly sung.

completely agree, the surface and form are classical (haydn) the depth is romantic
