I have to admit that the idea of the Commendatore literally breaking down the wall in "Amadeus" was brilliant, but for overall effect (quality of the singing and acting, stage setting and the absolutely magnificent costumes of the damned in hell beckoning the Don to join them in torment), the production here attains perfection.
No! Sí! NO! SÍ! NOOO! You can hear the pain and growing fear in the Don Giovanni's voice and the inhumanity and impending doom in the sometimes inhumanly low notes from the Commander. And the composition only intensifies this!
Amazing skills ... Ramey damn near hits an *A4*, which many baritones do, immediately contrasted by Moll's D2 ... Sends chills down my spine every time I hear this scene with these singers.
You're kidding, right? Kurt Moll is dead? You're right his doing 'the Commandatore' is superb. That was one of my dad's favorite operas. My mom used to do arias of Dona Anna and Dona Elvira

Moll does less and outdoes Ramey by a mile. I had the rare privilege of hearing him as Sparafucile in 1990 at Bayerische Staatsoper opposite Leo Nucci as Rigoletto. Incomparable basso profundo!
Sencillamente excepcionales... Bravi! Gracias por compartir!

This representation is amazing, but the translation is terrible and sometimes wrong. I'd love to contribute with a closed caption translation to this video
Specialists say the Komandatore is in fact father Mozart warming his son for his lifestyle . Leopold died in 1787 and Wolfgang in 1991 ... very soon after his father !

Dark Bass, thanks for posting this. Where did you get the recording? I have been seeking this recording for years, and I can't find it anywhere. Like the other commenters, this is by far my favorite performance of this magnificent piece.
This came from a live performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. It was broadcast on PBS on Halloween, in 1991, the bicentennial year of Mozart’s death. The announcer for the telecast was none other than F. Murray Abraham, who won an Oscar for his performance of Antonio Salieri in the 1984 movie Amadeus.
It's been said before, but Moll is wonderful: Intelligent, musical, sympathetic..... But just not FRIGHTENING. I love the musicality of this scene, but should we not be feeling sense of absolute terror? After all, the Commendatore has come to Drag DG To Hell.......
Moll is sympathetic ... but consider ... he actually manages the deeper part of the role that I have only seen Robert Allen and Franz-Josf Selig capture since. Mozart's audience would have known the references Da Ponte as librettist makes to Scripture: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, and if any man hear my voice, I will come in and sup with him, and he with me" -- Rev. 3:20 is the Lord Himself, making a last effort to reach a sinning church. Il Commendatore, in the previous scene, KNOCKS, and he says in this scene that he has come from dining in Heaven ... and has come to invite Don Giovanni to dine with him ... IN HEAVEN. That is what Mozart and Da Ponte's audience, largely Catholic, would have known. Thus in one character, Il Commendatore represents the urgently seeking grace of God and the inexorable justice of God once grace is refused. Kurt Moll manages that, and puts the suggestion of the majesty of God in both aspects ON TOP of all that because his voice is so beautiful, and his acting is so commanding ... perhaps the angel Gabriel, clad in stone, proclaiming the message from heaven to turn from sin and be saved, almost beyond human emotion on the subject ... almost ... of all the performers in the role I have ever seen, few beside Herr Moll, at the end, hint at the deep, grim sadness there is when a sinner chooses not to repent, and thus chooses hell when he could have had heaven.
The LORD has brought you to this clip, to see this... Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelations 3:20 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. Matthew 4:17 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. Matthew 21:32 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, Acts 3:19 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. Acts 20:21 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. Revelation 3:3 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. Revelation 2:5 TURN (repent) away from your sins. Put your TRUST in Jesus who died and payed on the cross for your sins. PRAY (in your own words) and call him to save you. If you will die it will be too late. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15
This is the point, actually ... Il Commendatore DOES come on a mission of mercy with an abbreviated version of this message, and the audience of Mozart's day would have known that. Thanks for spelling it all the way out, my brother...
This is by far my favourite musical moment of all times. Ramsey and Moll were just genius 🤪🤩
Genius!!!
All three are stunning . I agree best moment of K Moll . A pressure ...
I am a bit young for this but man, Kurt moll and Sam Ramey and Furlanetto in the same scene??? Man, I wish I could have seen that live.....
Those costumes are so eerie and grotesque it's outstanding.
Even a Goth would approve! LOL
There's never been a better trio for this scene in the history of opera.
I listen to this often as I consider that Kurt Moll was the best Commendatore ever and Ramey also excellent...RIP Kurt Moll
Signore Ramsey - you are my favourite Don Giovanni. And Signore Moll - may the Lord Rest him in Peace my ever favourite Commendattore.
Same and Furlanetto is my favorite Leporello.
The power in the low notes is outstanding
yes! goosebumps
By far my favorite recording of this scene.
Even better than the one in Amadeus?
I have to admit that the idea of the Commendatore literally breaking down the wall in "Amadeus" was brilliant, but for overall effect (quality of the singing and acting, stage setting and the absolutely magnificent costumes of the damned in hell beckoning the Don to join them in torment), the production here attains perfection.

I switch back and forth between this one and Rodney Gilfrey. Both great!
I’m 41 years old and this scares the hell out of me every time I watch it. No other performance does that.
Jesus, that ending. Superb rendition, superb directing.
Sí! No! Sí! NO! SÍ! NOOO! You can hear the pain and growing fear in the Don Giovanni's voice and the inhumanity and impending doom in the sometimes inhumanly low notes from the Commander. And the composition only intensifies this!
Man! Well said!
Amazing skills ... Ramey damn near hits an *A4*, which many baritones do, immediately contrasted by Moll's D2 ... Sends chills down my spine every time I hear this scene with these singers.
The BEST costumes and art direction.....how absolutely awesome, wish I could see it in person...
No doubts, Mozart was the greatest genius ever, even out of this world, someone really unique, there will no exist anyone even close to his geniality.
kurt moll just passed away last march. what a shame, he is by far my favorite commendatore.
You're kidding, right? Kurt Moll is dead? You're right his doing 'the Commandatore' is superb. That was one of my dad's favorite operas. My mom used to do arias of Dona Anna and Dona Elvira
Always remembered, never forgotten.
I have listened this i don't know how many times. Absolutely amazing!!
The best version of this aria1!
"His blackest opera..." Such a Masterpiece
To see Kurt Moll and Samuel Ramey perform live would be amazing. Second only to seeing Mozart conducting this masterpiece himself.

Grandiose. Monumental. One of the high points of European Art - of Art, fullstop.
R.I.P Kurt Moll! March 5th 2017. Not sure what the cause of death was but I know when he passed away.
he was simply amazing
Ramey and Moll, what a duo singers!
Best finale ever. My god! Ramey and Moll are unsurpassable !
Moll does less and outdoes Ramey by a mile. I had the rare privilege of hearing him as Sparafucile in 1990 at Bayerische Staatsoper opposite Leo Nucci as Rigoletto. Incomparable basso profundo!
one of my favourite films on youtube of them all :)
Sencillamente excepcionales... Bravi! Gracias por compartir!

The most fucking epic final in all the history of opera.
5:35 Bass low D!
That was a d1
d2
@Mari Muradian with headphones is a lot easier to hear low frequencies
The best thing is that d2 was probably easy for him. He hit c2 in a video available on youtube and there was no fry, clean and easy.
Saw Moll sing Caspar which was very beautiful, which is not what is required
This needs to be on blu-ray!
Mozart is for far, the greatest genius ever.
How I wish this video included the final scene!
This representation is amazing, but the translation is terrible and sometimes wrong.
I'd love to contribute with a closed caption translation to this video
Lorenzo Principe Could you please?! Even just posting it in the comments would be greatly appreciated.
Please post it in the comments :)
What a scary scene of retribution and doom. Fabulous!
You have to give it to the Don, he goes to damnation like a real boss.
Specialists say the Komandatore is in fact father Mozart warming his son for his lifestyle . Leopold died in 1787 and Wolfgang in 1991 ... very soon after his father !
Splendido! Emozionante!
The all times best Commendatore!
This is why you repent kids.
Magique !!!
One word only. Wow.

I knew Sam Ramey was great. But, Kurt Moll blew me away with his presence and his voice. I certainly was terrified.
The best commendatore ever
This is my favorite scene of ANY opera (excluding all Wagnerian works though)!
Randall Carr I agree that Wagner is great, but I think Wagner himself would have disagreed with you
truly terrifying
Would love to get this version on DVD, link anyone?
If only... The bureaucrats who make a "business" out of music have decreed that this priceless work of art will not be shown... Damn them too.
When Kurt Moll hit that bottom D at 5:35, that was just chilling and heart-stopping.....
that gracious voice
Dizione perfetta!
imagine this man using today’s microphones that would be soooooooooo basssssy
The point of singing like that is to be heard without a microphone (because back then there were no microphones)
The very best.
BRAVO!!!
Best version ever....
Siepi, Giaiotti, Flagello... state of the art.
Terrifying....
Wow.
Is there anywhere I can buy or watch the full recording of this?
Dark Bass, thanks for posting this. Where did you get the recording? I have been seeking this recording for years, and I can't find it anywhere. Like the other commenters, this is by far my favorite performance of this magnificent piece.
¡Formidable! ^_^
6:30 magnífico
Dos grandes, inmensos de la ópera... Magníficos!
sherlock holmes a game of shadows brought me here
name of the original track pls?
it's not a track, it's an aria.. 'A cenar teco'
It's a duet if you don't count leporelo's smaller part. otherewise a trio.
Aria is a solo.

The gold standard
I am here to underetand the book of Murakami 😅
Il nome di actore Leporello?
Ferruccio Furlanetto.

Anyone else feeling that Moll, despite of the great voice, is having huge trouble with staying in rhythm?
nope
