  • In this video I try out Derwent Graphitint water soluble coloured pencils and show the result both before and after adding water to the finished sketch. Not my best work but I still had fun doing it and am looking forward to trying out more sketches with these pencils.
I was disappointed that the wood on some of these pencils split when I was sharpening them and definitely didn't seem up to the normal standard of wood on other Derwent pencils that I have used. As I explained in the video the pencils do not completely cover the paper and a lot of paper grain was left white, however maybe using a smoother "toothed" paper would eliminate this to some extent. I was just using a sketchbook and maybe a Bristol Board paper would be better. On the other hand the grain showing through does have a charm all of its own if that is the effect that you want. The colour palette is very muted and dark just right for a winter's sketch of a northern European grey day landscape. These pencils give a dark moody sketch or if you don't add water they give the impression of a graphite pencil sketch with just a hint of colour, so quite a unique medium. I am keen to give these pencil a chance and practice more with them. As I said in the video I also want to try out the watercolour palette that Derwent do in the same range so I will be buying a set of those soon to try out with some more winter landscapes.
Hope you enjoyed the video and I will try and make more frequent videos this year as I seem to have lost momentum a bit lately.
Happy, healthy New Year everyone and Happy Painting!
    Stay safe and well.

That was brutally awesome. I love Graphitint, since i have my box, i use it exclusively. Your art is brilliant. I love them. You are right a dulled down yellow and red could have been more practiclal in the set instead of the many greys that look so alike. Thank you so much for posting.

A bit late to say it now Carie but the pencils should have been returned as not up to scratch but the video was enjoyable and turned out pretty well despite your misgivings. I hope you have now , one year later, come to terms with the muted colour selection. Best wishes to you

Thank you for your comments. I had actually had this tin of pencils for several years and not tried them out so returning them not a possibility but I still think these pencils have potential for winter scenes and enjoy using them for that. Regards Carie.

Does anyone know if the finished artwork will smudge or is dusty? I use sketchbooks and worried it might come off onto the other page...

Liz I replied on the paint set to your comment, although my reply is definitely more pertinent to the pencils than the paints as I don't think they would smudge. Regards, Carie. x
