Sometimes when I don’t have access to ground pork, I find a cheap cut of pork, cut it into large chunks and put it through my food processor. I can’t tell the difference! Saves me money!

I am looking at the Fred Meyer ad for this week and ground pork is not 1.99. I never thought of getting a roast and having it grounded, that's clever. I've gotten the precooked little ham and had it sliced for lunch meat, but I like this idea too.

I bought a large pork tenderloin for 99c a pound at Costco recently. We have a freezer, I cut it up into pork chops, chunks for chile verde, and smaller roasts. I needed ground pork for a recipe and I minced the frozen chunks with a chefs knife. The food processor made it too fine for what I was making.

I am older than dirt, low-income, and have cooked everything under the sun from scratch. The biggest advantage that I can see with a subscription service is that it is a "culinary school". So many people under the age of 35 cannot cook ANYTHING that doesn't come pre-prepared and or microwavable. Following the recipe cards and amounts is a great education without the time and gasoline cost of taking a hands-on cooking class.

The meal kits were great postpartum - delivery, no shipping, reduce decision fatigue, easy for spouse to cook.

Yeah, I could see that being a really good way to use them. I remember sending my hubbie grocery shopping when I was recovering from childbirth and just reminding myself to be happy with whatever he came home with.

Instead of a bottle sauce , it s a packet of sauce

As someone who used meal boxes for years and have recommended them to all my family and friends, they are great for small families, beginner in the kitchen and if you’re not great at coming up with meals. I have a family of 6 and it’s cheaper for us to by groceries on sale. I’m grateful for my experience and learning more ways to cook with meal boxes but it’s not cheaper in my opinion.

There are so many ways to make meals affordable (sales, substitutions, simple ingredients, etc.). Plus I find homemade is almost always better tasting. I've looked into the meal boxes before and what you get vs. purchasing ingredients...there's no contest that buying ingredients will save you money.

I am a retired butcher. Pork butt is your bet best for ground pork, and you can sometimes find it on sale for less than $2.00 per pound. You usually have to buy a whole pork butt that is maybe around 4 or 5 pounds. You can sometimes find a cheap grinder on craigslist or use a food processor, then freeze what you dont use. Also instead of buying expensive ground beef get a chuck roast and grind it or put it in a food processor.Chuck roast is also usually cheaper on sale than stew meat. another good idea for pork is boneless pork loin chunks
again on sale in my area for around $2.59 lb,and slice them for thin or thick pork chops. You can pound them thin and use them for various dishes. Hope this helps, greetings for Northern California.

We used to use Every Plate for quite a while and my family loved it. We eventually just got tired of it, but the biggest benefit for me was it taught me to cook! I learned how to time eveyrhing, how to combine things, what order to do things in. I always recommend it to people who say they can't cook or dont like to cook because it will definitely teach you!

I do use Everyplate, but very strategically. I first signed up as a way to try new recipes without buying large supplies of ingredients I wasn't sure I'd like. Went through my 6-week promo of discounted boxes, then cancelled and recreated the recipes that I really loved on my own. Got sent a new promo code to re-enroll a few months later for another 6 weeks discount and have repeated this process now for 3 plus years. Not cheaper than grocery shopping, but not more expensive either. The way I'm working it gets me new meals for lunch prep without having to do the research myself.

That's exactly what I do! I've been using Every Plate off and on for a few years now. I keep the recipes we like to rereate on our own. It's just my husband and myself, so it works :)

    • @wjb-wi6dt

For me, it's a time luxury when I get very busy - I teach, so busy periods are somewhat predictable. When I know one is coming up, I'll check for promo codes, and I almost always have a "please come back" offer available. Not having to shop and having the decreased prep gives me a break on those awful weeks. It is cheaper than eating out with a promo - it is definitely not cheaper than cooking from scratch! But I also agree with you that it's a nice way to try out new things without having to purchase a whole bottle/package when I need a smidge for the recipe.

    • @dianecuthbertson2686

Excellent idea and it’s exactly what I do, my last offer, I can’t remember who it was, I’m signed up with 4 different ones 😂 they offered me 6 meals for 2 people, so 12 meals in total for $36 AUD with free shipping, I just couldn’t pass up that deal so said yes please.
I’ve reactivated another one who sent me an offer now, sometimes it can be hard to find 3 meals you really love the sound of so I’ve still got 5 meals waiting patiently for me.
I love it when they send me “we miss you please come back and accept this offer” emails, works out to be a great saving 😂

I have 2 very young kids and the way I look at it, this box may be a little bit more expensive than if you deal hunt but I personally don't have the time to go to multiple stores with 2 kids (who are also nonverbal autistic and we do 5 days of therapy a week on top of school) and I run a business from my home so I can have my own hours. the meal kits make it to where I don't have to get out and deal hunt and go store to store etc. which I already don't have time for. If i was single or our lifestyle was a little different, grocery shopping is a better option. some really great points in this video!! I really enjoyed how in detail you were and how you tried to stick with the same ingredients to a T. I think if you have the time, do it yourself. if you live a hectic busy lifestyle , I think paying a few more bucks for it to be shipped to you and the recipes are given to you is worth it.

Once you get past the promotional price, it's definitely not cheaper! We've tried several of these meal delivery kits just to relieve the burden of deciding what's for dinner (which they are really great for!), but we stopped ordering them because 1) it never seemed to be enough food for my husband, and 2) we had several boxes from at least two different companies arrive at room temperature - yuck. I saved all the recipe cards we've ever gotten with the kits and sometimes use them to recreate the meals using regular groceries - it's not perfect but it's still pretty good!

I use Homechef which is another meal box that is actually more expensive. To me it is worth it mostly due to the huge improvement to my decision fatigue. Figuring out what to eat every night was exhausting especially while working full time with 2 small children. Getting everything delivered straight to me with instructions and everything proportioned is worth it to me since I can fit it in the budget

This is exactly how I feel, while I don’t have kids it’s hard to manage work plus pets and the house and still plan meals.
Trying to be strategic and ordered for double the amount of people it’s just my husband and I so I chose 4 - I figured it’s worth it to try the first week since it was 70% off. worst case I can try something else but I’m OK with cooking. I just have trouble planning and shopping.

  • @FairyRosee_

This is a really good comparison. When you buy something on sale sometimes you never use it! Sometimes I just want to think about one meal and not the entire contents of my fridge/freezer/cabinets and the exhaustion of trying align the stars, and defrost times, together with sale prices. My one week of Everyplate was a glorious one due to only thinking about three recipes. It's a good starting point for people with a small bandwidth.

Meal boxes have their time and place. I think meal box kits are great for singles or a couple/small working families. Cheaper than eating out, saves time, and kits make it easier to cook for 1 or 2 people.
But For us, a family of 4 we find the portions small and it is still cheaper for us to make our own meals at home. Plus I’ve become very good at shopping the sales. Yes I’m trading a little of my time to grate carrots but when you add that savings up over several items it is worth it to do it myself. And today with grocery pick up options you can save time that way if that’s your preference. I do think signing up for the kits on ocassion when there is an extra good sale can be worth it to get new recipe ideas though. Then you can recreate them at home! I also use them for travel and find they are a benefit that way compared to eating out if you stay somewhere with a kitchen. 😊

Thank you for doing this!! It’s not cheaper than groceries and I learned from you to stop into Kroger quick for the sale items and markdowns. I’ve done it for a month and already saved a ton! Plus it helped vary our meals and able to make one from my past that my family loved!!! What I can also control better is what’s on the sauce for sodium, sugar, fat etc. devils advocate though it may be cheaper in places where food is so much more expensive like metropolis cities and cheaper than eating out. But for the average person who cooks from home already, definitely not. Thank you for all your great ideas! I love it!!

You have to set up a profile with payment info BEFORE you can see the meals. For people with food allergies it is very hard to use a service that does not let you see the meals ahead of time. On line chat with an agent was able to cancel the box, but without chatting with her. I would have been charge for a box that the automated service said I could not skip or cancel because it was past the cut off time EVEN THOUGH I had just signed up. Just not worth it.

i have a physical disability and have done a lot of these meal boxes for convenience's sake and the lack of labor or transport cost really make a difference for me however I find that I have had delivery problems with these meal boxes so much so I have stopped using them opting for actual delivery from grocery stores instead that way you get more for your money you can customize it without the labor of going to the store. side note with grocery delivery if there is a problem it is fixed rather immediately with meal box companies if they have an error you typically have to wait for a refund also actual grocery delivery keeps local stores in business and local people paid I like that aspect of it as well

As well as some of their sale priced items, if they're not sold out. Thank you! I love that you're sharing with your cute mom, too. I knew a meal kit wouldn't be less than groceries. While we could afford a meal service, doing so would crack our grocery budget and we wouldn't like that. Christine cooked a $24.00 meal kit for 6 and had no leftovers. We plan for leftovers, for lunch the next day, or portioned and frozen for a ready-made future meal, or repurposed for another meal.
I've learned a lot from Christine and really appreciate her advice. I don't buy much any longer that isn't on an advertised sale, or unadvertised in-store discount ... thanks to Christine teaching her ways.

Thank you so much for doing this. My family tried a meal kit delivery for 1 month and it just wasn't worth it. I live in cold country and the ingredients got too cold and weren't in the best shape. Shopping sales and doing it yourself is definitely the way to go but I see the appeal for a super busy family who can spend a bit more money on these delivery kits.

$24 and $24.92 isn't identical. One is pretty much $25. But, since you have so much leftover with the sauce, carrots, cabbage, etc. for another meal, it's even cheaper at the grocery store as the ingredients went further. That said...still sounds like a good deal from time to time just because it does save time and you could find some new recipes you can then recreate yourself.

That's what Christine did. In this video, Christine only shopped at Walmart, except for the ground pork (because it wasn't available) and I don't think anything was on sale. And since the video is current, the prices are current in her area. Even not buying sale items, it cost her less because she had more leftovers ... 4 large servings, and enough grated carrots and red cabbage is enough for side for her family. Cooking from scratch wins over meal box deliveries.
To know how much it would cost you, you'd have to do the same experiment in your area.

I am a single guy. My breakfast and lunch are almost always the same, but I like to mix it up for dinner and don't like to eat the same leftovers for 4 or 5 days running. I find the biggest problem I have when shopping are the bottles of sauces. I don't use soy sauce all that often or definitely not that PF Chang sauce shown in the video. Even steak sauce and ketchup are rarely used. So, if I buy those, not only does it increase my shopping $$ significantly, but I can sometimes end up tossing them half used. (Salad dressings kind of the same - - I basically stick with ranch dressing these days) Meats are SO expensive now. I haven't turned vegetarian by any means, but I have to rely more on beans and eggs for my proteins. I'll never use these meal boxes. I just think they lure you in with specials and then a month later you're paying top dollar for them. If anyone can convince me otherwise, please do.
PS: I do save a lot of those little packets of sauces when I go out to eat. They last for quite a while and are excellent replacements for buying a full bottle of something.

We have tried 3-4 of these subscriptions in the past. Our favorite was SunBasket. I don’t get the kits anymore (just keep skipping) but I do like the ability to view the upcoming menus on their app because I can view the recipe and ingredient list so if anything does sound good, I can just get the ingredients and make it on my own!

As a retired B'Boomer, who was a stay-at-home Mom raising 3 kids, I can say clearly say that meal kits are never going to be cheaper than shopping & cooking your own meals. That being said, if you're a dual income working family, it's all about the convenience factor ! Eating at home is almost always more healthy physically & emotionally, so that is a major factor to consider. Using these kits once or twice a wk, a person can see, would be extremely helpful for those families, as long as it doesn't break the budget. So there's definitely a place in some families for them. As for this veteran cook, however, I don't think it would be something useful for my husband (still working) & myself. Although I have checked them out, they appear appealing, just not anything I couldn't do myself😉. 🏖Kj in Tampa Bay 🤗

As a young business owner who has never learned to cook, I end up eating out almost every meal which is terrible for my health. I just signed up for EP because the cost is under what I'm paying now, plus its healthier and easier than teaching myself to cook! Definitely cheaper for me considering all the above!

The cost per serving is much lower homemade, simply because you have so much left to work with. You're a protein of your choice and a sauce made from pantry staples away from an entire additional family meal. With one true recreation and one adapted recreation, your homemade version can easily slide in under $30 for TWICE as many servings as the nearly $25 box.

I use EveryPlate strategically. I order when I know I will be coming in from out of town or have extra things on my schedule, etc… Time is money. Having everything on hand with my role as the primary bread winner for my family and also the primary cook, not only saves me time planning and shopping, it also helps me prepare healthier meals. At times when our scheduled is packed, if I did not have the EveryPlate, we would resort to fast food -not cheap and not healthy. Additionally, I am a good cook but I have still learned some new techniques to prepare food we eat already. For me, using the home kits periodically is really a value.

I live in Germany. Self-checkouts are not yet very common here. But some stores already have them.
I work in a supermarket and I'm very sure that I can check out customers faster than if they do it alone at the self checkouts.
Cashiers have been trained to work the checkouts and usually do it every day. Of course not every cashier is the same but normally they should be faster.
When it comes to meal kits, the delivery is a big problem for me. My husband and I both work full time so no one is home when the kits are delivered. The package would then be at the door for several hours. In the summer I could throw away all the food when I get home from work.
Apart from that, as I said, I work in a supermarket. So I have my fingers at the source and it would be pointless if I ordered meal kits. But I can imagine that it is a good solution for some people.
    The video was great😊

I just started everyplate and find the portions large for me. So, I stretch the meals into 3 servings instead of 2 and that really makes the cost per meal much better in my opinion. I usually skip every 3 weeks or so to "catch up" on what I haven't cooked yet. I've been depressed and having the food in the fridge helps remind me to get up and get going.

I used a promo and got a few dinners from one of these meal kit companies a few years ago. It took 45-60 minutes to prep and cook the meal. I think I ended up using almost every one of my pots and pans, knives and gadgets in the house. I had a mound of dishes and was exhausted. about 2 hours of work for dinner!! I might want to find a meal kit that the food is cooked and just needs reheating (just to save from cooking or eating out a few nights a week), I usually cook a big meal several times a week on less busy weeknights and we have lot of leftovers for another meal or two. Fast food and eating out is getting so high.

Most grocery stores now already have dinners already cooked. They are fresh and all you have to do usually is heat them up or cook them for a short period..add a salad or more vegies and you're done. Not the cheapest but not as expensive as eating out.
