My dad is a widower and I think having the small sizes at Dollar Tree is a great option for us older folks who may have smaller households of one or two people. Yes, it is cheaper to buy in bulk, but not if it gets thrown out. Dad is not good about freezing leftovers, so the smaller sizes make great sense.

    • @rosacanisalba
      @rosacanisalba 6 місяців тому +19

I've just done my Dad's shopping and specifically bought the really small tins of tuna. Yes its more per gram but one tin is perfect for his lunch. One of the bigger, standard tins is too much. He's not so mobile now and putting on weight would make that worse, so individual sized units are better.

💯 agree! I wish bigger stores like Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart and Target would stock single size food tins and packages. We are empty nesters and larger boxed foods go stale quickly in our house, we are judicious in what we buy in bulk now, mostly meats that we repackage into serving sizes for just the 2 of us and we then vacuum seal them and freeze them; we also buy fresh fruits and vegetables weekly instead of every 2 weeks and just what we need- the prepackaged ones are just o much and they go bad long before they get used, so we buy singles like apples, oranges, etc and lettuce and spinach and tomatoes and other fresh items like that for just what we need for the week. Everything has been so focused on bulk sizes the manufacturers have forgotten us singles and small households and we end up wasting food which means wasting money. So, all that said, that I do shop at Family Dollar, Dollar General, etc for the smaller size items like tuna and Cheerios because those smaller sizes do not produce waste and money over the long term.

@@jkp62 Exactly as you describe, that’s what my hubby and I do, and also in helping my father. It would be nice if the warehouses sold basic individual sized pantry items in bulk single servings, such as prepared rice and pasta dishes, soups and ready to reheat meals.

Other things to buy at Dollar Tree: Next year's wall calendars $1.25 vs. $10 at Walmart. Also serving platters and bowls!! Just last week I spent about $25 on plastic trays, bowl, tongs and ice scoops for my the hors d'oeuvres during the cocktail hour at my daughter's wedding!! Dr. Dray is so awesome! She has multiple videos of going through the ingredients of skin care at dollar tree, walmart, walgreens and cvs. I love how she compares name brands like cerave with store brands. I know for some cerave is not expensive but I'm on a very tight budget so if the store brand is cheaper and has same active ingredients in the same percentages. I'm going for the store brand. Most dermatologist on UA-cam are always going on about uber expensive stuff. Dr. Dray is awesome in that she does both and gives honest feed back.

Now that Dollar Tree has some premium items ($3 or $5), you really have to be careful that you don't assume everything is $1.25! My favorite item is the cards and I think they are still $1 or less. They keep promising to reduce other items back to $1, but I haven't seen that in our stores yet. If you buy sandwich meat, just save the containers instead of buying the cheap ones--hey they're basically free! I used to buy the jarred mushrooms, but now they've cut the size in about half and they come from China--that's a no thank you! I usually get the Amish pretzels--it's a great value.

I was talking to a woman at Dollar General about pricing. I agreed that, yes, the items were cheaper, but they were also much smaller. I even showed her the difference in Cheez-Its (a 12 oz box vs a 24 oz box at Kroger for the same price!) I melted a spatula from DT into my frying pan, but it was an old frying pan, so not a big deal. The best knives, especially paring knives, are those ones from Grandma's drawer. No one knows where they came from, but they are THE BEST! I have two that are like 50 years old and still sharp.
My fave food I've bought at DT was a 8 pack of sandwich cookies. I just wanted a little sweet treat after lunch and thought, well, if it's not very good, I'll pitch them. They were YUM! 8 package with 6 cookies in a package. Two of each - chocolate with vanilla, vanilla with vanilla, vanilla with orange, vanilla with strawberry.

I also keep note pads next to my chair for recipes from UA-cam, grocery lists from sale adds, dinner ideas for several weeks out (waiting for ingyto go on sale).

I also have taken to using the Notes app on my phone for just about everything because I can make checklists for morning routines, afternoon routines, weekly routines (check oil, clean out car, take out trash, etc.), Before bed routines, movies I want to watch, store-specific shopping lists, diy projects with sources listed for resources needed and where I can find instructions if necessary, gift list ideas for people as I think of them, to-do lists, etc. It has not only saved me a bunch of headaches, but it's also satisfying to check things off as I do them and then, at the end of the day, as part of my before bed routine, I uncheck all the recurring ones so I'm ready for the next day. This also gets me mentally prepared because I'm looking at my calendar for the next day and week and setting reminders on my calendar for whatever is coming up.

I tend to like the toy isle because I have little children yes they break easy, but their attention span lasts about as long as those toys, so I would rather buy a few little things to keep them busy rather then spend money on a good quality toy that is only gonna hold their attention for a little bit just for a quick fix or a bored day . Also easier to get in and out of a dollar store as opposed to a huge WM or Kroger. Christine is still very young and she doesn't realize. hi Christine!
toys: my daughter likes Barbie dolls and any dolls that resemble Barbie dolls. we got her a Barbie-sized doll from DT, and the doll has a weird face so we started calling them "Darbie" dolls 😁
pencils: Dixon is the company that makes the Ticonderoga pencils (though, full disclosure, I had no idea that they made pencils that weren't Ticonderoga)
cereal: 100% agree on the cereal cups and the ziplock bags, but the DT by me will occasionally have full-size boxes for $1.25, usually it's seasonal ones that are now out of season (ex: Trix Fireworks which was released around 4th of July). they're still well within expiration dates! just a couple weeks ago my wife got a box of the Trix Fireworks and a box of "Disney 100".

Big thumbs up on most of your recommendations. I do like the tiny journals for specific purposes (not journalling, though). I bought one of those mitts years ago. HOLY COW did I burn my fingers! Now I stick with the ones I get at my supermarket etc (which has good sales on mitts/towels periodically).
One thing I do buy is Goya. The canned beans. For some reason the supermarkets here don’t carry them, and they are very high quality (and to me worth the price). So I do get those at DT.
I do like the kitchen towels. They are not the most plush, but for a pretty, seasonal design the price is great. One thing I’ve done is get the seasonal cloth placemats, stuff with pillow stuffing from Walmart, Velcro them together, and you have a really lovely pillow for cheap.
Such a fun video, as always! Thanks!

I've seen reviews of Dollar Tree potholders and mitts that say, "they're too thin," but only AFTER I had already bought them for my house. New? Yup, too thin. After a run (or two) through the washing machine? That fluffs 'em up and I've been using them ever since. I think they're compacted for shipping and need to be run through the washing machine to fluff them back up, then they'll be fine.

Are Dixon pencils the same as Ticonderoga? The company offers a number of brands, with one of the most well-known being Ticonderoga: the yellow No. 2 pencil known for its distinctive green and yellow ferrule. Other brands include Dixon and Oriole pencils, Dixon Industrial products, Prang school and art supplies, and Lyra and Pacon art products.
