Shooting Harman Phoenix 200 in Hanoi, Vietnam | A Brand New Color Film
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Harman Photo (Ilford) sent me over a couple of rolls of their first ever color film, branded as Harman Phoenix 200. I took these rolls to Hanoi, Vietnam and shot them both while walking around the city one day. It is a contrasty, quirky, punchy, and oddly saturated film with minimal dynamic range. I would definitely consider it a niche film stock, but it is very exciting that we have one of the biggest players in the film photography industry deciding to dedicate time and resources into an entirely new product.

Awesome video dude! I appreciate the honesty about the film. Don't be discouraged with the views! Your content is absolutely some of the best photography/film photography content on the entirety of UA-cam! You have such an eye for composition both with photo and video, and it's super inspiring and fun to watch. Keep it up man!
Thanks dude! And yeah all good haha I'm just messing around. Appreciate the kind words and support. Cheers!
Agree 100% Always look forward to one of his videos!
While I agree that the results look more "experimental" and won't replace any Kodak stocks anytime soon, I think as a community we should embrace this effort and maybe just buy a roll as a nod to Harman that the initiative is appreciated and they should keep at it. We can't expect film prices and supply to improve, get mad at Fuji for discontinuing one stock after the other or rebranding Kodak stuff, while simultaneously not giving new players (Harman as in a new player in color film) who work on improving the film-landscape their shot.
I have been following you for a long while, as a Vietnamese living abroad, this video reminds me so much about home. Great video, and keep up the work my man !!
Thank you! Cheers.
So rad to see you got your hands on this stuff man! And sick that you did it in such an exotic location haha! Gonna be keeping an eye out for it to hit the shelves around here so I can give it a go myself, the levels of contrast look unparalleled but as you say, nice to have something outside of the traditional market to tinker with!
Haha yeah it's definitely a one of a kind film, which I suppose is a good thing. Just really wish it was sitting at about $8/roll USD... Oh well, good news overall! Hope all is well sir!
You ain't wrong about the vids on this stock. At around 8am PST my Instagram and UA-cam timelines were absolutely dominated by review and first impressions videos 🤣🤣
🤷🏼♂️😂
I'll take Brae's reviews anytime.
I’m so excited about the new stock 😊
Enjoyable as always, just a regular dude shooting film. This is the content the people need.
Haha thank you! Cheers.
Congrats on your Vietnam trip. I’m a big fan of your vlog style episodes.
Thank you, Ted!
Liking and commenting to please algorithm. Great stuff.
Appreciate it man haha!
Keep up the good work. I always look forward to your videos!
Thanks! Cheers
so glad to see my country in your video
Hanoi was an incredible time!
@@BraeHunziker if you got a chance try Sai Gon next time, no less chaotic than Hanoi 😅
2:49 ... holy shit. Dead.
:')
the paper scene goes hard
That was a really special moment
Great video man. A solid honest review , definitely some interesting results, but it will be interesting to see where this goes.
Most definitely. Based on feedback, it seems like scanning this stock at home will deliver much more neutral results.
Welcome to Vietnam !!!!! Big Fan.
Thank you! Such a beautiful country.
Out of everyone's videos who posted about this film I waited a few days to watch, and yours was first. I'm glad this was the first impression I got of the new stock really interesting but definitely not for everyday scenarios
Well thanks for checking out the video! And yeah it's a funky one! Just glad we have companies attempting to bring new products to market!
Everything you've been doing recently has been incredibly inspiring and motivating to me. I appreciate your creativity.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I love most of the photos that you shot. I look at this film as an effects film and very artsy. this film makes for a really good street photography film
I agree that it'd be a fun stock for street photography! There were certainly some results I was pleased with. I can see the potential!
So glad you got your hands on it, dude!!
I bought 5 rolls of this, mainly just to support the cause but also somewhat curious about it.
All things considered, your images look pretty solid. I also tend to stay away from gimmicky films too because I sometimes don’t like the confines of the images.
I shot a test roll yesterday and your video popped up today.
Thanks for making this. :)
Oh nice! Thanks for watching! Hope you got some good results!
Holy hot damn! Getting spooky as hell @9:21 💀💀
Haha right!
I love the colour and the image from phoenix and you it's just suit it all.
Omg fantastic video Brae!! V interesting and engaging (I esp love your storytelling). So glad I re-found your channel :) I hope you’re well!! ☺️
Thank you very much!! Cheers!
Awesome review Brae! These Hanoi street scenes are really well suited for what Phoenix has to offer. Perhaps a future 120 iteration will make a guest appearance up in the Cascades.
Wouldn't mind seeing a 120 iteration! Not sure I'd shoot landscapes with it, but some portraits could be fun for sure
Honest and informative. Love the pics, too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Welcome to Vietnam dude, I've been a big fan of yours for a long time and it's awesome seeing you here in my country
Thanks dude! I had a wonderful time. I can't wait to come back!
Awesome video! I gotta find that flash you have looks perfect for street photos, I definitely want to try this film out
Thanks! It's this flash: a.co/d/bSBuC5k
It's not great build quality, only fires at one power level, and batteries kinda die quickly but it's super cheap and compact. I've found that for reasonably close up portraits 1/60th, f/5.6, with a 400 speed film delivers good results!
Nice review of the new film man, a great location to test this films characteristics. Some really great shots in here.
Thank you dude!
Great vid, great shots, great location, great looking film stock. Err……yeah….Great! 😎📷👌
Haha thanks!
Góc nhìn HN quá chân thật bro ơi :)))
Realistic look of Ha Noi, bro :))
Cool video and really nice film stock.
Great video Brae! Love that new Shimoda backpack you rocking too!
Thanks! Yeah the Urban Explore is awesome. I'm loving it!
Great vid. Glad you made it to one of my favorite cities. Hope you got to spend a long time in VN. So cheap. \Amazing food and people. Photo opportunities all over the place. Save travels.
Thanks! I had a wonderful time. Can't wait to return. Haven't shot so many photos in a loooong time!
@@BraeHunziker Reach out if you go back and I can share some places that might be of interest. I spent 2 weeks with my best friend and his VN family touring around VN..mostly from Da Nang up North (Hao Long Bay). Hanoi was my favorite city....but visited many places (some not as crazy has Hanoi!). Cheap beer everywhere!!!! Love to see you take portraits on the Mamiya from your next trip. The people seem to love having their pictures taken. (FYI. Not so impressed with the film stock you reviewed...but maybe the final version might be better. For me, the colors were a bit too crazy..I shoot digital but try to keep up with film for fun.)
Not a fan of the look personally, but I think a little over exposure might benefit those murky shadows. Love your vids, keep it up!
It's certainly quirky and probably not for everyone! Some exposure tests on it would be interesting.
And thank you for the kind words!
For sure, probably of lot of reviews, but I watched yours first. I agree with you. It's fantastic that they're investing in the business of film, but I wouldn't buy this film either, even at $5/roll, let alone $13. You did makes some nice images with that stuff anyhow!
Haha thanks, Bob! It's funky for sure. Looking forward to the future iterations.
This reminds me of Lomography film stocks
I don’t think what you are seeing are the “quirks” of the film, the way the shadows are getting crushed to black in these images looks to my eye to be more a matter of the scanning. If I had to guess I’d say these were done on a noritsu with automatic adjustments to favor the highlights. There is a very good chance that if you scanned these at home using something like Silverfast, you would get a much broader tonal response. Never trust lab scans unless you are going to an experienced, high-end lab that is capable of doing hires scans without any adjustments.
There were definitely adjustments made by the lab. Almost every lab is going to make adjustments on your scans to give you a balanced image. I could scan these at home with my Sony a7iv to get a more neutral photo, but the majority of people are going to be getting their rolls scanned by a lab, and so I felt showing these images directly the way I received them from the lab would be the representation of what people can expect. And these results perfectly align with the way Harman described the characteristics of this stock: contrasty, quirky, punchy, vibrant, grainy, and a "cross-processed vibe."
@@BraeHunziker I respectfully disagree to the extent that using bad lab scans totally changes the nature of the review- it's a review of the scans not the filmstock. There is a huge difference between "Punchy" and crushed. (I say this as someone who's shot film for 40 years and supervised color correction in Hollywood for 10.) you are right, knowing what lab scans might look like matters, but it's only part of the story.
It is interesting that Harman have issued recommended settings for various scanner setups.
@@DavidWilliams7037A I think they kinda had too, its definitely hard to calibrate for a brand new film, especially one that has purple negative! Having watched a bunch of these videos today it's clear that some labs literally didn't "get the memo." 🙂
@@BraeHunziker I was going to mention/ suggest you read the Casual Photophile review where showed the lab scans and his camera scans. But, you have stated why you showed the lab scans. Harman said they’re still figuring it out, and hopefully they get it at a better formulation, but you’re right about the price, it’s disappointing. I think most people should be doing their own scanning anyways. Great video and review.
The overcooked look is growing on me haha. It's low contrast lighting I quite like the colours.
The more I've gone back through and looked at these, the more I like them actually.
2:50 hahaha...5 in the morning with a cup of joe and you made me spill it all over the keyboard 🤣🤣
It was painful watching that footage back... haha
Since almost every YT film photo channel has dropped a video on Dec 1 giving for this film first impressions to detailed technical analysis, there are a lot of mostly sample photo videos to compare. I think it's fair to say the Brae got screwed by his lab scans. While the film is fairly saturated and contrasty, it's nowhere near the excesses shown here. It's also grainy beyond reason and is said to have quite low resolution. Consider it a prototype work in progress. On the other hand, trying to sell this cripple for $13 a roll raises Harmon almost to Cinestill class when it comes to abuse of the customer. Omitted from this review was that the film lacks the traditional red-orange color correcting mask of nearly all C-41 films. This may make it easier to scan, once folks work out the required scanner software changes, but it will make the film relatively useless for the small minority making RA-4 prints. Also, it uses a polyester film base, so off limits for Lab-Box users.
Hanoi is surely great place for street life photography...
Looks similar to a lomo400. Nice! Great stuff man!
Thanks dude!
I don’t mind the “shooting x film in y location” type video, BUT I love your regular videos. Sad to hear your views are going down cause your videos are better than what most channels make imo. Like all those super gear focused channels are a bit boring. Videos about photography and art is much more fun!
I appreciate the comment! Gonna continue to make the videos I find to be most enjoyable :)
Thanks for the support!
Oh when did you come, thank you for coming to my city
Mid November! I had a wonderful time!
How big was the mid edit facepalm that took place after realizing what you did with the papers? Definitely relatable. 😂
It was a rather large face palm that's for sure lol
5:26 You are watching a master at work. Form: 10/10
haha a classic
I really wish the Cannon AE-1 had a better manual mode. The light meter is great, but fairly useless in manual mode. Good to see you get out of the country.
Unfortunate this color stock is in its early / experimental stages because it does distract a little from these great compositions man! The subframing and foregrounds were great. Love from the east coast.
Ah thank you very much! Appreciate ya checking out the video 👊🏼
This reminds me a lot of when I cross-processed Agfa slide film. Probably not much actual use for a stock like this, but it's cool as a proof of concept and hopefully they'll keep refining it further.
Definitely a cross processed vibe! Excited for them to improve upon this film!
I don't know if it's the film itself or the post-processing (or maybe even the subject matter) but these images look extremely retro to me. 80s vibes.
Most definitely!
You're not the first to say that :)
Nice!!!! Real Nice! I shot my first roll of phoenix in Ha Long bay. The results came out super nice. I've watched this video twice now. What did you think of Hanoi? My wife and I are not the biggest fans, but we LOVE Da Nang & Phu Quoc.
I actually really enjoyed it, but didn't spend extensive time there. I'd be interested to go back for a longer period of time and get a better feel for it. Seemed pretty cool from my first impression though.
Damn, I feel kinda bad that one of my favorite film photographers was in MY city and I didn't know. When did you go? I hope you had a wonderful time in my country.
Hanoi was just incredible. I can't wait to return! Unfortunately, I had some lingering food poisoning from Thailand before I got to Vietnam, so I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked. I will most certainly be back, however!!
I love VN. I plan to go back next year. Fortunately, my best bud is Viet and his family treats me like family. Fantastic country...amazing sights, food, and the people are unbelievably wonderful...wherever you go.
You really need to scan the negatives yourself to get proper result from these. The lab scanners punch the contrast button way too hard to compensate for the blue film base.
That's what I figured. I am going to try scanning on my home setup soon.
I think these shots would look dope converted to bnw!! Look at you being a great street photographer and all
I'll have to mess around with that! And yeah way out of my element haha
Support the film. I can see its similiar characteristic with slide film
I suggest you (and anyone else reading this) watch Kyle McDougall's video on this film. Most people seem to be getting bad results due to the scanning method.
Holy crap, your voice sounds exactly like James from Linus Tech Tips 😂
Awesome stuff as per usual pal....I need to know where you got that mug?
haha my dad got it for me for my bday last year. I bet you can find it on Amazon or Google!
Just found your channel and I’m digging it. What is that flash unit on that Canon?
Thanks! It's this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B0C37913ZX?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_25P30KHPXV7RH2R00MH5
Cheaply made but works fine for me. Only one power setting so I've found that f/5.6 @ 1/60th with 400 speed film delivers good results for reasonably close portraits.
Just ordered two rolls of it from B&H. 36 exp for $13.95. they need to keep it around and make a lower saturation high dynamic range true color version in 400 and 100 and in 120mm. It looks like an Instagram filter built into the film. That makes it interesting. I feel like they went after Instagram itself. Lol
An expansion into 120 would be much appreciated. Especially with their second iteration!
i want to know the brand of the flash you use for this camera please ( btw welcome to VN bro, good picture from the person who shoot this pic😎😎😎😎)
amzn.to/49Nk6Fa
Great vid as always, but not a fan of the price or results. I’ll still buy a couple to support the movement.
People have been getting better results by scanning this film with a mirrorless camera or dslr it seems, but not everyone has a full home scanning setup obviously...
Congrats on your Vietnam trip. Would you mind if you let me know which flash did you use?
Thanks! And yeah it is this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B0C37913ZX?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_25P30KHPXV7RH2R00MH5

I thought at one time Ilford owned Ciba chrome later ilfordchrome ?
I was doing some digging and all I found was the ilfacolor disposable cameras. I definitely could be wrong though.
They have done color film before
like vsco C1 preset
What flash is on the Canon?
let's visit jakarta, please :)
Hey man I feel attacked
9:24 yo that girl is a demon bro glad you got out of there safely
lol
Booked Vietnam the day before yesterday, January 1. How are they with film at the airport?
Nice! Not super compliant with my request to hand check it. They kept insisting that the machines wouldn't do anything to it (I have sent film through those types of x-ray scanners before and didn't notice any issues with the film), but after a few times of me explaining that I had 800 speed film with me, they agreed to hand check.
@@BraeHunziker Yes, I live in the Netherlands and I fly by so from Schiphol, where they have CT scanners. Those are even worse. but I take 3200 ISO with me purely to kind of force them to do a hand check
Hi, what model of flash are you using with your Canon? I'm looking for something low profile like the one in your video.
Here’s the Amazon link: amzn.to/49Nk6Fa
I shot some film in mexico recently and my camera got slammed by condensation from the humidity and movement from my AC cooled room to the warm morning. Are you having similar issues? and if so how do you combat said issues? :)
I've had my Pentax 67ii brick up from condensation. It's hard to combat it in environments like this. I keep a big microfiber on me and try to wipe down my cameras as much as possible then put them in my camera bag when I'm not using them. But at the end of the day you're kinda rolling the dice with these old film cameras.
@@BraeHunziker Thanks for the advice and videos. I've learned a lot from you!
and oh shucks, I guess I need to get a new (to me) film camera! Canon F1 here I come!
Nice video and opinion! What flash do you have on the canon?
Thank you dude! Here is the flash: a.co/d/bSBuC5k

What back pack are you using?
This is the new Shimoda Urban Explorer, I believe it is currently on Kickstarter
Try taking a picture of garbage in Japan. It’s like a needle in a haystack. And if you do find garbage, you might not know it’s garbage.
Haha sounds like quite the scavenger hunt!
It is NOT their first colour film.
Firstly, super excited with your trip to Hanoi. I am sure you will have additional takes of your trip to share. Look forward to it. Now, your review on Phoenix is as expected. You took a series of images based on the data available/presented to you and researched it in a way similar to any photog embarking on a new emulsion. As expected the results are obvious. Needless to say we all will get into the rhythm after a couple of rolls. Great review.
Thanks for the comment! Cheers dude!
oof, cool to see a new film stock but that look is not for me. no dynamic range on either end of the spectrum.
agreed
Loved seeing video and photos. Great video Brae. Nice to see you traveling and sharing. ♥️NVfam
I pretty much left the scene and watching videos because of the price. Film + scanning here sets me back $35+ per roll. Just no way to realistically do this hobby anymore
Just checked prices, turns out its way closer to $45 now
Don't blame ya
What flash were you using?
