I'm using an old version of PS so this tutorial was great for me. Your tutorial was one of the best on any subject that I've ever seen. Talking at a moderate pace and then zooming in to show the exact tool along with showing hotkeys is awesome. Thanks a million. KT
Man your tutorials are the best!yesterday i recomended an showd to my friend who's never used ps or anything like that your tutorials and he was speechless. He told me"this is the real tutorials, and now i have will to start learn this stuff"! Thanks :)
not to sound akward but this doesnt work for a black persons face ive tried mine and other people of color faces and it only works with people of lighter skin tones if you will good tutorial none the less
Hi Marty, I know this is over 3 years old, but here is a question that may help others too. In this tutorial, when you desaturate the photo and mask the face onto the bust, the tones of the face and the bust are very close. In other instances, my attempt included, the tones are markedly different. I find that no amount of dodging works: I end up with a face that loses definition to get the right tonal balance. So my question is; whet kind of work can I do just after desaturating the face to equalise the tones and contrast to that I get the kind of match you have in your tutorial? I suspect I need to start with a curve:level adjustment to get the same tonal range, but that is not enough to get a perfect match. I would appreciate your or your viewers' suggestions. Thank you for another great tut.
Sometimes, to match tonal ranges, it requires a combination of using many filters (i.e.: Curves, Levels, Brightness / Contrast, Exposure) and many Blend Modes at various opacities.
you have the best Photoshop tutorial on youtube. every little detail. you are great teacher. thank you. one question when i open filter gallery > plastic wrap.. my picture get all blurred? even i change the " highlight strength ", detail and smoothness also? any suggestion?
Awesome as always but my question is, what if you want to include the hair of the person's portrait to cover over the sculpture's hair and want to make it look like marble as well? Would the same technique you used on the face work with the hair also?
Marty, the smudge tool will not do as you show. Instead it kinda 'pull's paint rather than blends. I also use a Cintiq and have set it to pressure sensitivity bit I just can't get that natural blend like you show. Is there a specific setting etc?
You would lighten the dark beard with the Dodge Tool in Midtones and Shadows, as well as using adjustment layers (i.e.: Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, Exposure).
Blue Lightning TV is there any way I can send you my final result? maybe you can give me some tips on how to improve it, i managed to solve the beard issue by smudging it all and then dodging it to make it brighter, but the face looks like dirty, couldn't use the smudge tool properly
Starting around 7:50 why did you need to select the alpha channel, make a copy, and then add another layer beneath it all in black? I was able to add the same plastic filter on just the snapshot layer without the extra steps and the result was the same. Am I missing something going on behind the scenes? Thanks!
Your result was not the same. When the plastic wrap filter is applied directly to the composite snapshot, the effect is also applied to the black that surrounds the bust.
i really loved this tutorial been trying to figure out how to do this for a while. Is there a way to change the hair, like mine is tied up, or if possible make an afro lol?
I'd guess the best way to do that would be to select the hair, and then lighten the image so it is closer to the color of the marble. Then smudge it so that there is less texture. Might need to even add some contrast after lightening it just to make sure the overall detail remains intact. Let me know if you try!
Hi guys!!! I luv designing but I am facing problem in working with Adobe illustrator 2021...I am only 2 days old with this software...though I have discovered many tools such as layers etc. But I am a bit scared when it comes to colouring my illustration...it's very difficult to colour the objects.. unlike simple PAINT, I need to make objects without clicking the mouse twice, thrice or more, I.e I have to make an object, otherwise I am not able to select the whole area...though it's ok but it is very tough for me to do it with mouse...it would be very helpful if u guys can suggest any tools to make it work right🙏
After you desaturate the photo, you can either use your Dodge Tool in the "Shadow" or "Midtones" range to brighten the skin or use the "Curves" adjustment layer.
Frequency separation doesn't work that way. It allows you to separate the texture of an image from the tone and color, so when retouching, you can focus on just the texture or the skin beneath it.
do you have any open source psd files with the layers created to your designs? as you can do some cool stuff. would be nice to share your psd's so everyone can havephone editing theres.?

good tutorial none the less
One can lighten skin tones with the Dodge Tool in the Shadow and Midtones mode.
it worked thank you
Cliff Po Not sure (or tried it) bu tperhaps it would work if you invert the picture in case of dark-toned skin to make it light?
solution : don't be black
Dick van der Velde meh.. that’s not gonna work out well. Than the shadows are the highlights and the highlights are the shadows...
Amazing tutorial Martin. Big thanks from London!

Are there other marble bust to download, and or, is their a site to go to to purchase some? Thank you for your wonderful demonstration.
For your convenience, I created male and female marble busts sans faces. I don't think any exist other than mine on the internet or elsewhere.
Hi Marty is there any way to do this if i have short to no hair and have a beard instead of hair and pork chop sideburns, and as always great video
Hi I was wondering how would I change the the hair to maybe a buzz cut or something?
Thank you for this tutorial
You're really Great!!! keep the excellent work and .... thank you!!!
You rock, Marty. Thanks a lot.
A really useful tutorial! Thanks :D
Could you show us how to do this without a blank bust? Because I think for some of us it would e helpful
Awesome as always but my question is, what if you want to include the hair of the person's portrait to cover over the sculpture's hair and want to make it look like marble as well? Would the same technique you used on the face work with the hair also?
If the subject has dark hair, it should lightened as much as possible. Experiment with curves, the dodge tool, Levels and blend modes.
Man u are the best..thanks for sharing!!
You rule, mate.
thank you so much BLTV you are awesome. i subscribed
es linda:)
what would you do if you want to use a statue that already has a face but you want to use your own face?
+Camila Pinzón Remove / retouch the features off the face of the statue. That's what I did for the base statues in this tutorial.
Marty, the smudge tool will not do as you show. Instead it kinda 'pull's paint rather than blends. I also use a Cintiq and have set it to pressure sensitivity bit I just can't get that natural blend like you show. Is there a specific setting etc?
same here!
Same here ...

@Sci-Fi Machines great tip, that helped me a lot! I also turned the strength down too.
what if you wanted to remove the hair ?? a bald head ?? i can't find any bust stocks.
Nicely done.
Great job bro !!
nice work
wow this was really useful, THANKS A LOT!!!!!!
Such a great video and channel! I have one question. Is it possible to do this if the male has a dark beard?
You would lighten the dark beard with the Dodge Tool in Midtones and Shadows, as well as using adjustment layers (i.e.: Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, Exposure).
Badass video! Thxs for the tutorial!
Holy smokes, that's some coat that dude has on.
WOW! C'mon this is stunning, what, !!!!!?!
hey amazing tutorial, many thanks, and what about if there is a beard? should I mask it out?
I would use a layer mask of it and use Curves to lighten it. You could also try inverting the beard and blend it.

I haven't used Illustrator in over 10 years, so I pretty much forgot how to use it. Sorry.
I want to do this, but i have a mullet so the hair isn't gonna work out
Great video, but for a darker person... how do i brighten the photo even more?
After you desaturate the photo, you can either use your Dodge Tool in the "Shadow" or "Midtones" range to brighten the skin or use the "Curves" adjustment layer.
Thanks Mr.Marty From Philippines!
Loved it! Awesome
Flo I like your picture
Gracias. Great tutorial!!!
Hi, congratulation for your tuturial, can you tel me if on photoshop you can create an effect like "melting paint" as on corel drawn
tank you
larry
great job Boss
... where is the linik for downloading marble statue template(s) ???
Would it be possible to use frequency separation by replacing the colour layer with the marble template?
Frequency separation doesn't work that way. It allows you to separate the texture of an image from the tone and color, so when retouching, you can focus on just the texture or the skin beneath it.
do you have any open source psd files with the layers created to your designs? as you can do some cool stuff. would be nice to share your psd's so everyone can havephone editing theres.?

Amazing. Im gonna try it.
this is awesome!
