Misplaced Childhood was a huge part of my life when I was going through a tough time. It came out just as I had split from my KayLee
Lavender
Childhoods End
Kayleigh
White Feather
Blind Curve
Bitter Suite
Heart of Lothian
Waterhole
Lords of the Back Stage
Pseudo Silk Kimono
Loved the show everyone! In case you wondered - I absolutely LOVE ❤ the pre-amble with the beers 🍻, the charts and the context behind the weekly pick. For some of us - we really dig the rapport, the 'banter' and the exchanges you all have - as colleagues, friends and music lovers. It's 'sound as a pound' - as we say in #Liverpool !!! Never been a massive fan of Marillion but this has inspired me to revisit! 🎉
Barossa Valley Shiraz Red from Aldi tonight 15 per cent yeahhhh 😂🎉
Excellent choice and excellent show gents. Couldn't agree more Steven, for me Blind Curve is the best piece of music they ever created.
Yes, isn't it stunning? Thanks for watching!
Have to confess.. I've never had a pumpkin beer , but absolutely love this Marillion album !! The record that got me hooked on Prog Rock !! Just brilliant. 😍
Great video gents, hope you're all well! This is an amazing album, when I started buying second hand vinyl in the mid 90s this was one of the first I got, 50p well spent! So on to my ranking, this was hard I love the entire thing...
10. Lavender
9. Pseudo Silk Kimono
8. Kayleigh
7. Bitter Suit
6. Heart of Lothian
5. Childhoods End
4. Lord of the Backstage
3. Waterhole
2. White Feather
1. Blind Curve.
If i was to rank this again in a month or so the order could be very different.
Great album.
Took so much crap for liking this back in the day.
It's a fantastic album love all eras of the band .
Great show guys as always.
I saw Marillion live for the first time aged 14 on the Real to Reel tour where they played the first half of Misplaced Childhood. It sounded good but no one could have predicted how popular it was going to be. I live a 20 walk from De Montfort Hall so go to the Marillion Weekends whenever I can.
Oh what a fantastic choice, Fellas. Truly one of the all time GREATEST concept albums ever made, in my opinion. A gathering of guys that were all completely on the same wavelength as each other, at (arguably) an artistic/creative peak.
When you think that Ian Mosley played drums on Steve Hackett's Highly Strung album , not too long before this album , Misplaced Childhood was a cataclysmic step up in quality.
My favourite Fish era album the original uk vinyl pressing still sounds great to this day.
I've never heard this album, and actually never really tried marillion beyond the 'hits'. I'll try this tomorrow. Excellent show again. Thanks.
I was very fortunate to see them on this tour in San Francisco as a youthful idiot. Life changing. Also saw them in the South Bay on the Clutching At Straws tour as they and we were breaking up. My favorite shows ever.
Misplaced Childhood maybe my second most listened to album. I LOVE it. Love thier live e.p. as well.
Is that Brief Encounter? I had that on import. Real To Reel is best though.
What's your first?
Moving Pictures
This is still the best album of all time. Saw them live a couple of times with Fish. Best band on the planet those years.
Another great UK Connection. My order is:
Kayleigh, Lavender, Pseudo Silk Kimono, Waterhole /Lords of the Backstage
Heart of Lothian/ White Feather / Childhood's End
and joint first Bitter Suite /Blind Curve
Chicago made an AOR album? Quite a few I believe.
Evening chaps! Great show again. My favourite Marillion album has always been Clutching At Straws. However, when I've went back to Misplaced Childhood I often only played Side 1, now I much prefer Side 2! It's weird how your tastes change over time. Fish's lyrics are a tad pretentious but I just go with it. It's an absolutely crackin album! Heard it a million times but still love it. Cheers guys, Graeme from Greenock! 🍻
I completely agree. I used to prefer side 1, now I veer towards side 2 as well. Thanks for watching!
Late to the party tonight (had to watch the Mighty Mags beat Arsenal!) but here is my attempt. I love Fish's lyrics, here and everywhere else, to bits. The guy is a journalist.
Blind Curve
Heart of Lothian
Bitter Suite
Waterhole
Lords of the Backstage
Kayleigh
Pseudo Silk Kimono
Lavender
White Feather
Childhoods End?
Thoroughly enjoyed the show guys 👍and thoroughly enjoyed rediscovering this wonderful album. Been listening to it the past couple of days on my original vinyl release and it sounds fabulous! My ranking -
10.Lords of the Backstage
9.White Feather
8.Waterhole (Expresso Bongo)
7.Childhood`s End?
6.Pseudo Silk Kimono (such a wonderfully haunting intro to the album)
5.Bitter Suite
4.Blind Curve
3.Lavender
2.Heart of Lothian
1.Kayleigh - Easy to tire of songs that are overplayed on the radio. However, going back to listening to the full version on vinyl reminded me of how good it is and why I am still very fond of it. Annoyingly the version on the radio is the 7" version which cuts short the guitar solo but on the album you get the full version. It was soooooooo good to have a song so high in the chart back then by a band like Marillion. That sort of thing doesn`t happen every day and I`m very glad it did happen. I nearly put `Heart of Lothian` at no.1 but through loyalty of how much I enjoyed it at the time and the sterling work the song has done all through the years by flying the flag for Marillion and Neo-Prog (sorry Simon!🙂)I went with `Kayleigh` for my number one.
Many thanks for choosing this album to rank as I don`t think I`ve enjoyed a revisit on any other albums you`ve covered more than I have on this one.
For me, this is Marillion's best album for their carrier. Every song is fantastic. Even the b-sides were great.
Great album and one of my all time favourites. I was 16 in 1985 so reminds me of my adolescent years. Never thought of it as a album of individual tracks but rather an album that should be listened to in its entirety, a bit like Floyds DSOTM
Hi Pete and Simon and Steven,I can't say is my favourite as it all has a place and it all works together 😊
Oh yes, sentiment for me. Saw them performing it live as part of the Welcome To The Garden Party tour (I think it was called), June 19 1986 in Rotterdam Netherlands where I live. First time that I saw them live, and it was stellar.
I always consider it as a whole, so watching this was very interesting and entertaining. Thanks guys! ❤
I feel the same way about the album as a whole, Pete. It's one giant, beautiful thing. Still amazing to listen to for me. Brilliant.
"Don't be surprised... the heroes never show"
The solo in the single version of Lavender is magic, listen to the whole album at night with the light's out when it's raining, brilliant.

Just managed to track down Deluxe edition at a good price new
I'm a relative newcomer to Marillion, and this is the album I started with. I absolutely love it.
I'm here, got the right week this time.
You've no idea how relieved I am to see you made it Kenny!
Thank you @@TranquilityFireReid I wouldn't have missed it for the world. On my next trip home I am going to the Black Isle brewery so looking forward to that.
@@kennycraig6769 Definitely something to look forward to!
Saw marillion at the old Glasgow pavilion on their first big tour ..for Script..absolutely blew me away....kinda fell away for me by time of misplaced childhood and never bothered with them since..still what a gig that was ...
Nice video😃👍
Ironically, I received my deluxe edition of Childhood in the mail yesterday (with signed artwork) and from the very first notes, I was back in 1985. Still a fantastic album.
Shoot! Completely missed the show. I've never listened to a complete album, so this is the first time. Music is OK, I struggled with the vocals, but you know what, it doesn't matter because it was the wrong record (the Jester one)!
Round two: Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
1. Kayleigh
2. Bitter suite
3. Blind curve
4. Childhood’s end
5. Heart of lothian
6. Waterhole
7. Lavender (dillydilly?)
8. White feather
9. Lords of the backstage
10. Pseudo silk kimono
Always enjoy the banter between you guys,Cheers
Thanks for another great video guys, I've never heard this album but I will rectify that in the next 48 hours
Kayleigh was the first song I heard of Marillion. What a great album. On a different note, Cheers is one of the top sitcoms of all time along with its spin-off Fraser. Cheers.
I agree completely regarding Cheers and Frasier!
One of my all time favourite albums and it gets better with age! Partcularly like the bit where Fish gets really angry at the end of Blind Curve, he sounds just like Alex Harvey!
My numbers 10 and 1 are the same as Steven
10 Lavender 9 Childhood's End 8 Waterhole 7 Pseudo Silk Kimono 6 White Feather 5 Kayleigh 4 Lords of the Backstage 3 Heart of Lothian 2 Bitter Sweet and 1Blind Curve
Interesting fact...if you listen to this album non stop in headphones while commuting by public transportation to work while reading Battlefield Earth...there are more than a few parts that give that Pink Floyd Wizard of Oz vibe...or it could just be me
I like that interesting fact!
Tough assignment, almost like sacrilege, which I am undertaking with the assistance of a rather splendid pint of Doom Bar... a refreshing 4%. Although you cant get much further away from Lothian than Sharp's Brewery in Cornwall.
Like Simon, I am a sucker for the "hits" and like Steven I too bought most of the early 12" singles ( although, not the Picture discs as well 😁)
Lords of the Back Stage
Waterhole
White Feather
Pseudo Silk Kimono
Lavender
Childhoods End
Blind Curve
Bitter Suite
Heart of Lothian
Kayleigh
Doom Bar is a quality pint Jim!
Enjoyed this episode. Re Pseudo Silk Kimono: I do love it. Yes it's a bit melodramatic, but it's mysterious, hinting at weighty themes to come. It's an overture to a great piece of work, and segués beautifully into Kayleigh. That's my take on it, anyway.
I seen Marillion for the first time on this tour in Toronto Canada. I was 15. It was a fantastic show at ,what was then called, The Masonic Temple ( then Concert Hall )
This was my soundtrack over the summer of 1985….still a favourite and saw them at The Milton Keynes bowl and they were really good , even though everyone said Jethro Tull were better, but for me Fugazi really came alive for me as a track that night!
Too difficult because every track has it’s place, but thought about using the hat to draw them, then thought I’ll pick them on mentions of places I know.Turns out when you listen not as many ‘songs’ mention places as I thought. So I did it properly knowing if I did it again it would be different.
1 Blind curve
2 Bitter suite
3 Heart of Lothian
4 Kayleigh
5 White feather
6 Childhoods end
7 Waterhole
8Lavender
9 Pseudo silk kimono

Kayleigh
Lavender (3:38 version)
Bitter Suite
Heart of Lothian
Pseudo Silk Kimono
Blind Curve

White Feather
Lords of the Backstage
Waterhole
1 Kayleigh 2 Lavender 3 Heart of Lothian 4 Blind curve 5 Bitter suite 6 Childhoods end 7 Pseudo silk kimono 8 White feather 9 Waterhole 10 Lords of the backstage
Hey Pete, tried that Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout, may be my favorite. Bell's Kalamazoo stout is a must try. Misplaced Childhood is such a great listen through I can't separate the songs. I always have to listen from beginning to end.
And here I've been watching Golden Girls on Disney+ for two years now, never gets old...!
Family Ties was shown in Finland, my best friend and I had a bit of a crush on Michael J. Fox back in the mid 80s, hahah.
Thanks to this episode of The UK Connection I have now finally listened to Misplaced Childhood *hides under a chair* I just never got around to it! Very Genesis. The only song I knew from it was Kayleigh which I even had dubbed on a tape back in 1987, always loved it, remember seeing the music video for it plenty of times on Sky Channel and Music Box, but from hearing the record only a few times as of now I can't rank the rest of the songs at all... Pretty nice record though.
Game for a laugh . Candid camera for Pete
If you are going for New Belgium beers, Pete, I would strongly recommend Trippel or Honey Trippel. They taste about the same, but the Honey is about $4 more for six. Excellent copies of Belgian Trappist beers, but probably closest to Gordon's Gold, a Scottish beer made in Belgium and unobtainable outside that country.
My favourite Pumpkins are Helloween correct Simon. 😂
Trying probably the most unique beverage I've had while watching the UKC:
'Banana Bread Beer' from Eagle Brewery, Bedford MK40 4LU, UK. abv 5.2%
Does a good job approximating the banana bread flavor...
I've had and enjoyed that beer Unc! Nice!
I had no idea that the album placed that high here in the States. To be honest,I am surprised it even made the top 200 here.I have never heard any Marillion songs on FM radio. When I was in high school,85 to 89,I met only one person that knew of Marillion.
I always listened to this album as a single song. Apart from Kayleigh which was played to death on the radio, the rest I don't even know where one track ends and the other begins.
It's interesting to think about ranking individual tracks from this album. Apart from Kayleigh and Lavender, the whole thing blends into one for me. I love this album but i've always liked the overall sound more than the tracks themselves.
When i heard Kayleigh I couldn't believe what Marillion had done so I never bought the album and moved on musically.
I always liked Fish and became really interestd in the new Marillion who unlike Genesis were just as good but different without him.
Post 2000, I came back to to Misplaced Childhood and skipped Kayleigh to find an otherwise superb album.
One day, I really listened to the album end to end and got it.
Kayleigh as a single i am afraid mighht be a great track for the masses yet cheesy but in context of the album it fits perfectly and is essential. I now see it in a new light and the album is even better for it.
This is a class album almost from cover to cover. Those wasted years what a fool ive been.
And yet all the better for the revelation you discovered many years later.
Saw Fish play the hole album and he was Fantastic.
Since I discovered SOT the biggest compliment I can offer is that it has pointed me in the direction of albums and artists that I would not normally have discovered. This was an album I bought back in the day, more out of curiosity/thinking I was missing out on something. I have to be honest and say I didn't really get it then (I can't have played it more than 6 times) and listening now, noting the pop genius/beauty of Kayleigh, I still don't really get it - but that's ok because I gave it another go. I remember seeing Marillion at Monsters of Rock in 1985 and being just as nonplussed. None the less an entertaining show and remember; "stay out of the black and in the red, there's nothing in this game for two in a bed...listen to Tony"
I saw Marilion open for Rush on that tour.
Great show, although I've never liked Marillion. Enjoyed the beer and TV chat today, would love to see a Pete reaction video to Bullseye 🎯 😂
Really enjoyed the show, but there's no way I can split this album into individual tracks as it has to be heard in its whole. Clutching At Straws similarly so.
I always enjoy The UK Connection, saw Marillion in 1983, Middlesboro Ton Hall, of course with Fish, If I’m honest I can’t remember too much but I’m sure they were good. Jethro Tull in 1982, Newcastle City Hall, the Broadsword tour was, to me, more memorable. I don’t suppose you lads would ever….alright, alright I do watch ‘In The Prog Seat.
For whatever reason I think of this album as a follow up or prequel to the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Maybe bc they're both concept albums and Fish sounds exactly like Gabriel.
Steven really needs to do a track-by-track analysis of all Marillion’s catalogue, then Fish’s. More, please!
I prefer the debut, it has more meaning to me.
I actually agree with you there, but we choose the classic album more on sales and prominence than our favourites. Thanks for watching.
@TranquilityFireReid I still love this album though.
I agree, Silk Kimono should be longer Pete!
You gotta do the top 10 theme tune episode. I’m about 50/50kids programes and universal stuff.minder boon and the fall guy are givens and raggy dolls Ulysses and pigeon street are probably are in there and they just lyric songs you can do a 2 parter with instrumentals.👍
Not sure how that would go down but I'd LOVE to do that show. I am a real sucker for a theme tune!
I'm singing Ulysses... Ulysseeeeeeeeeeeees! now!!!!
Well we do have Rainbow in our sights, possibly not the one with Bungle et al😢
haha I knew it would be right up your street mate,it’ll go down a storm 👍@@TranquilityFireReid
Haha that’s just outside my 10 ten mate, anyway I’m pretty sure rod jane and Freddy ended up starting a obscure prog band haha@@simonbrayfromsot1375
my daughter is named kayleigh
There's your difference between the UK and the US in a beer can - let's call a beer a beer versus pumpkin spices and habanero peppers. Meanwhile 1. The Sweeney 2. Minder 3. Bullseye (never quite understood the attraction of Bullseye) and I refuse to separate the tracks of Misplaced Childhood as it would almost be like tearing apart Thick as a Brick.
Wasn't sure this album would work being deconstructed this way, but you gents proved me wrong, which is nice. Also have never enjoyed the spoken word bits of this album...until now! Still only my 3rd favourite Fish-era album (Behind CAS and Fugazi...yes, I know I'm in a minority of 1 there, but I'm used to that...). We clearly need to get Uncle Simon more fully aboard the Marillion train though, could HIE be considered AOR/Melodic enough to fit into one of those shows somewhere down the line?
Any chance of doing this with clutching at straws further down the line ?
Stephen Miami Vice Ted Nugent episode
Hmmm.. ranking songs on this album is impossible for me because it’s just one big suite in my mind
Do clutching pls guys ❤
It's still on Gold Simon
My Break down is #2 Side 2, #1 side 1.
I’m not really a Marrillion fan but I’ll watch you guys all the same. I know this is off the beaten path but what are your thoughts on best sounding versions of Led Zeppelin ( CD ) version?
Frankie says yes Simon wish he/they hadn't lol😂
Has Stephen Reid tried Salt Rocks products from Dunfermline?
I have not. I shall investigate! Thanks!
1985 just finished my astrophysics degree
You can't beat a bit of bully Simon classic how do you share a speedboat classic
54:32
Great album, but it's been decades that I don't consider H as the new singer of this band. As to concept albums, I'm more keen on Brave and my all time favorite album is FEAR. But hey, Clutching at Straws remains a very well deserved second place.
Hmmm not sure pseudo, kayleigh and lavender are separable.
Impossible for me to rank song by song this one big concept piece.
Hopeless task! I always play this album as a whole, might as well be one long track.
My favourite recently seen clip Who wants to be a Millionaire USA version?
First question Who was first president of USA.?
Answer John F Kennedy wtf😂😂
Simon pretty much drinking Pi 😁
Is a 3.1478 a Pie and a Pint?
Something like that 😂
Never liked Cosby Show,Family Ties or Cheers.I could tolerate Golden Girls.I was watching Mike Hammer and The Twilight Zone
Mike Hammer was class!
I listened to it on youtube and clearly dont get it. So many people in the comments were praising this record and giving this high praise. I really did not like it. Im obviously missing something.
Must be but stick with it it's a grower
We can't all like the same things. At least you tried, that's the main thing.
Jesus, 20 minutes in and still rambling about television shows... this video would probably benefit from a healthy edit
UK Freeview Channel 48, Challenge, get yourself a bit of Bully....
The cupboard of Destiny, where the goblet of truth is kept?
That is exactly where the goblet resides.
Misplaced Childhood must be experienced as a whole album in one sitting ! Picking apart songs is not right with this album except maybe for Kayleigh. The same goes for Brave from Marillion.
