    Chicago should be applauded for continuing after Terry Kath's passing. I can't imagine what it was like for them to lose such an amazing talent in the most tragic circumstances. But it was the contributions of all the members that made them such an awesome band, so it's not like they were always going to be doomed without him. It was David Foster who ruined them.

    • @iluvpepi
      @iluvpepi 11 місяців тому

      That’s the tough choice that all bands who lose an inspirational member have to make. Metallica is another example.

    What a great show gents, great picks this time around! I love Night Ranger (top 10 band for me) so obviously I have Midnight Madness high on my list (my favorite from this time). Not the biggest fan of Sister Christian but the rest is great! Icon is a fantastic album too so that would be my 2nd, I'm not the biggest ChicagoAoR Era fan I prefer the Terry Katz Chicago although cetera is an amazing singer.

    Great to see some coverage on Icon guys! I first caught them on the Metal Shop radio show (anyone remember?) back in the day, where they played "Out for Blood" and I immediately went out and got "Night of the Crime" and the self-titled debut, and wore out the tape on both of them. Sure, the debut was a little heavier and rough around the edges, compared to this one, but it was more or less synonymous with the transition many bands made from '84 to '85, particularly on majors, charged with producing the pop-radio hit and rock anthem.
    To echo what's already been said, Icon had all the parts in place to make an impact, then suddenly vanished. If they could have landed an opening gig with a major act and rode the wave through the '80s, who knows how far they could have gone. They would have died on the vine in the '90s like the rest of those bands but at least would have some legacy to speak of and potentially re-emerged on Frontiers once melodic rock returned to prominence. They certainly had the talent. I'll disagree with Simon in that Steven Clifford as a vocalist was definitely distinctive and in my mind, a difference-maker. Consider the 1989 "Right Between the Eyes" comeback. It was a pretty good album overall, but you'd hardly recognize it as Icon--totally different sounding singer and they'd probably have been better off renaming the band. Worth checking out in any case.
    I recall a few years back that the original Icon, including Clifford, was getting back together and doing an album. I suppose it probably won't happen, but then again, other underground "classics" have come back around to varying degrees, so why not give it another shot? Anyway, great record, top to bottom.
    Night Ranger: "Passion Play" should have been a hit. Good guitar hooks, catchy chorus. Chicago: "Stay the Night" was a good tune--and video. Is that on this album? LOL

    I would suggest perhaps having a look at the 'More Perfect Union' that Icon did in 1987. It was only ever released on cassette and in a very limited capacy, although there was a cd reissue later on with a few bonus tracks included.
    The reason I suggested this is that Icon went full on AOR on this album and I think it would be great for the show.
    The only issue would be that the tracks are extremely hard to find on the internet (they certainly aren't on youtube last time I checked) and copies of the album can be fairly pricey

    A metal fan in 83 loved Dawn Patrol first time I heard it, moved to London , met some people but the person that became my best friend and me bonded over Nightranger and bought Midnight madness on release a firm favourite.
    Icon bought all 3 on Ebay after Butch kept talking about them and like all 3.
    Hated and avoided Chicago because of those 2 songs Pete persuaded me to try them in lockdown but said stop at XI so I did, really liked them which surprised myself, listening to 17 he was everyone should stop at XI.😂.
    Steven, my favourite is II maybe try that but if you don’t like horns doubt you’ll like any.

    Night of The Crime is a stunning album; credit has to go to the main writer who was not in the band Bob Halligan Jr. Eddie Kramer and the band also put in fine performances - Aquilino/Wexler and Stephen Clifford (who effectively ended their momentum by leaving after the release) et al - fine job, brilliant album.

    Hey guys, actually managed to listen to this tonight - albeit not in one go. Enjoying a bottle of Old Hooky, from the Hook Norton brewery...
    Interesting opinions on Night Ranger and Icon, both bands I have loved since I first heard them so I'm a bit biased.
    That said, MM is probably only my fourth favourite 'Ranger album, (Dawn Patrol, 7 Wishes, Neverland are 1-3) but I love them almost as much as I love Journey and Foreigner. And more than Boston, if I'm honest...
    I love both those first 2 ICON albums, despite the shift in style, and adore Clifford's voice, one of the great losses to the genre.
    I actually saw them live, with Jerry Harrison it must be said, supporting, of all bands, KINGS X, in Edinburgh - both bands were on Megaforce Records at the time. I only went for Icon, and Dan Wexlers guitar pick, pressed into my hand when he shook it, is still tucked into the front of my NOTC CD to this day.
    CHICAGO 17 is an album I've never heard all the way through as the singles were overplayed, overproduced and anodyne, and I'm with Steven all the way on this one.
    I've tried the early stuff too, but that didn't work for me either. I think the over- pervasive horns put me off....
    Looking forward tobthe RAINBOW episode, another band I've loved forever...

  • @iainhead9898
    @iainhead9898 11 місяців тому +2

    Wow, great choices this time round! Not really familiar with the Chicago one as most of their later stuff is too bland, even for an AOR nut like myself, BUT...
    Midnight Madness, nothing really 'meh' about this one, which I'm guessing is this editions "Classic" based on the fact that Sister Christian is on it and was a huge hit!
    And my love for ICON is perhaps a tad excessive, but NOTC should have been massive, with only, admittedly, the naffness (lyrically at least) of Rock My Radio letting down an otherwise 10/10 album.
    Looking forward to listening, and will be commenting again afterwards- may not be today though, lots on this weekend!

    Icon was set to get a huge push with the release of NOTC, Capital had put a lot into it. Then the singer quit and before they could finish mixing the record the Executive who signed and was pushing them was fired. Game over, never even made a second pressing. Even in their home town it was hard to find a copy of the record.
    I went to the record release party at the world famous Mason Jar and the next day could not find a copy of the record at the local record shop a mile from that venue.

    Night Ranger, I was a fan in the 80s, bought all their albums up to Big Life, they fell off my radar after that. I thought they'd split because I think Damn Yankees was around mid to late 80s. Not that familiar with Icon. Chicago, mmmmm, I just couldn't get past the horns. However, I've since tried because of SoT, after Pete persuaded me to look past the horns. I don't mind them now, but still struggle. To be honest I very rarely listen to Chicago, but might revisit the early albums.

    Session players and David Foster aside, Chicago 17 isn’t terrible, but it’s not that great. Danny Seraphine only plays on half the album, Peter Cetera only plays bass on Stay The Night, and there isn’t much in the way of horns on it. I love Dawn Patrol just a bit more but Midnight Madness is still a classic. Icon is relatively new to me but I like what heard from them.

    I don't get the shade cast at Chicago 17. The polish and Foster- smoothness is part of the magic. I totally disagree with Steven. I loved 17 from day one on release and it holds up...even with now 20/20 hindsight of production.

    • @LarryFleetwood8675
      @LarryFleetwood8675 11 місяців тому

      It's poppy alright bit I like it, less today though than back then. Speaking of Chicago producers, Peter Wolf worked with everybody in the genre back in the day from Starship to Heart or Survivor to Lou Gramm. Even worked with Frank Zappa in the '70s and '80s and produced the dreaded Face II Face by Scorpions, his Wikipedia reads like a who's who of AOR.

  • @actorJSB

    Opening fun fact: Ron Nevison worked with all 3 of today's bands at some point, he really did get around for a while didn't he? Put me down as another who in theory should love Night Ranger, but barely likes them (the Greatest Hits is enough for me and that doesn't see the light of day often) , but I'll (mostly) align with Uncle Simon on Chicago 17 (and you always have to say Chicago before the number of any Chicago album when naming it, no matter what anybody says).
    I actually think it's good, at least as good as slick 80s Adult contemporary pop/(very soft) rock can be. But whether or not it's a good album it's certainly a terrible CHICAGO album, so I understand fans who hate it (but I do believe no band who made good/great 70s music made music half as good in the 80s, the difference is most bands went back to their classic 70s sound after eventually realising this, while Chicago kept trying to replicate the success of this, and failing on all levels. Pity).
    And I'll sign off with the final fun fact that Stay the Night is the (only) track on here to feature Jeff Porcaro, with Carlos Vega being similarly uncredited on You're the Inspiration - Danny Seraphine understandably wasn't pleased and it's the earliest sign of him being slowly edged out of the band - Cetera is still the only original member to have left by choice, rather than death (Kath), sacking (Seraphine) or illness (Parazaider).

    • @joshcreasey
      @joshcreasey 11 місяців тому

      And Stay The Night is the only song on the album where Peter plays an actual bass guitar.

    Prepping to watch this episode, I tried to get through all three albums. Very much enjoyed the Icon album, which reminded me of a more musically celebratory time I really miss. I enjoyed the Night Ranger album as well, taking me back to the classic MTV days and the time I saw them live in the mid 90's. I tried to get through Chicago 17...I really tried...but it's just...so...Mind-Numbingly...BORING!!!! I felt my brain shrinking as I listened, so had to bail about half way through. GOD how I loathe David Foster.
