Hey boo hey !
OH!! Heyyyy GORGEOUS!!! ❤️ ❤️
I was wondering how you were feeling during the shoot? like was anyone aware that what was happening was well... not okay?
im simone and i aint no clone
Hey sundai
Hii this was my first time watching your videos and its actually interesting. I actually enjoyed it even though tyra makes me mad. This is just not ok.
Why didn't they just have the girls represent their own cultures and heritage? They would have loved that a lot more.
I would of loved to see that instead too. I think most of America would have.
But you know what they say,
If it's offend someone then they're talking about it, and good publicity or bad publicity it's publicity. ANTM is all about the views and who's talking about them
Correct. Like do their heritage .
Yeah pretty sure they ended up doing that in later seasons. Maybe because of the controversy, I dunno.
I would have loved to see a bunch of different cultures being represented.
it depends on their personal story. maybe some of them do not consider themselves as anything but american. maybe they don't have a clue about their own heritage. maybe they grew up without their parents etc. i mean there are so many reasons why did not. but what they did instead is not better though
@@rennesmine Right, like I would love to dress as my culture and heritage. (If I knew what it was)
They managed to offend about 20 nationalities in under 10 min 😂
I swear.....
It takes talent 😂
😂
1,000th like
I’m half Arab I was so offended
Tyra is really just throwing around the words “race” “ethnicity” and “nationality” in a very interchangeable way, and they’re all different meanings 😅.
What is the difference between race and ethnicity? Honestly, I don’t think I know ( I don’t mean this in a rude way I’m genuinely asking because I want to know the answer and don’t wanna accidentally offend someone)
@@EternalPhoenix Someone else explained race and ethnicity, and nationality is where you live, what country you're a citizen of
Thank you!
@@EternalPhoenix Race is a broader term like Hispanic or Asian, whereas ethnicity is narrow and cultural based. For example a person could be Hispanic and have indigenous ancestors from Mexico whereas a Hispanic person from Peru would probably have different indigenous ancestors.
@@soxpeewee are you sure you know what you talking about? Race is not broader but nationality is. What you was explaining for ethnicity not race is correct but race is not broader. In fact calling someone Hispanics or Asian is same as calling someone American.
Hispanic and Asian is broad but it is not race. They both not the same thing meaning wise either aka…
the ones they call Asian is because of a certain region they lived in.
The ones they call Hispanics are for all those whose “original” language is Spanish in which ALL are HIGHLY different cultures aka…
Depending on the country some are south western mixed with the European Spaniards that colonized their island
some are the original ppl of an island mixed with the European Spaniards that colonized their island
And some are original ppl of the island mixed with pure Africans that was bought into their island by the European Spaniards that colonized their island for the purpose of slavery.
And some Hispanics are pure Africans mixed with European Spaniards or mixed with the original ppl of the island the evil European Spaniards forced them into for the evil purpose of slavery.
And btw indigenous means true Natives of a certain land aka the original ppl of a certain country.
Noticed I placed “original” in quotes… that’s because every country besides Spain in Europe that speaks Spanish as their “original” WAS NOT their original language.
Just like the European came to colonize America and forced all the Africans that they brung into America and all the natives of America and whoever else entering America to adapt and only learn speak and teach the English language the European Spaniards ALSO did the same to all the island inhabitants that they colonized… (well they are Europeans aka European does as European does) all those islands they took over THEY ALL HAD THEIR OWN original language AND IT WAS NOT SPANISH these evil racist European Spaniards forced the inhabitants of all the islands they colonized and all the Africans they abducted from African for the evil purpose of slavery into them to only learn speak and teach Spanish else they were tortured and or killed.
So all the islands like Mexico, Cuba, Puertorico, Santo Domingo, Panamania and so on they all had their own separate language and it was not Spanish. It became Spanish by force by these evil racist Europeans. These islands are so mixed now BECAUSE of the racist European colonizers from Spain that calling someone Cuban, Puertorican, Dominicans, Nicaraguan, Peruvians and so on is like calling ppl born and raised in America Americans IT IS NOT THEIR RACE it’s just their nationality aka of where they born and or raised at.
I would love to have a serious documentary where Tyra has to explain why she came up with these concepts. I would watch the entire thing. Especially if the host was having no nonsense. "so what inspired you to insult all these cultures?" "Well it's not really insulting-" "Tyra. Are you about to tell me you don't know what blackface is?"
as interesting as this would be, Tyra would never put herself in a position where she would have to admit that she was in the wrong. :/
Yes! Have her interviewed by Tara Brown, the Australian reporter from 60 minutes who did that savage interview with that lady who faked Cancer. She holds no prisoners.
this really does need to happen
She did address it at one point. The video is somewhere on UA-cam I saw it. I think she apologized.
Cocaine.
The irony that Tyra, a woman of color, was like "Yes, I think black face is a wonderful idea for a photoshoot!".... Girl what?
educate yourself about what "blackface" means before butchering the term for clout.
@@DSHT88 I- what do YOU think it means?
@@DSHT88 yeah wait bro what do you think it means cause Bailey used it accurately
@@DSHT88 THATS LITERALLY BLACKFACE
While this is not exactly like the blackface as it used to be done, and while I think it wasn't used for the same purpose or to make fun of...this still counts as blackface. And while I have seen blackface used incorrectly a lot this isn't one of those times.
Tyra during the photoshoots like, "Act oppressed! That's the spirit "
Right😂
Oop
The way i just cackled 😂😂
I just hollered!!!
Hahaha
As someone from Hawai’i the sugar cane industry was pretty wack and owned by primarily white business men who tried to keep different ethnic groups segregated so they didn’t protest their pay and working conditions. There’s a really huge history associated with it, that goes beyond “they came here for jobs and then had babies”.
I was thinking the same thing. The lack of understanding about history is egregious.
and obama is not even hapa! LOL I thought she was gonna say The Rock or Jason Momoa (if Jason was around at that time which he might have been). THEY'RE hapas LOL.
I feel a bit bad for all these models. There's a good chance they felt uncomfortable while it was going on, but even if they didn't at the time, and were ignorant of how offensive it was, they probably figured it out by now and regret it. Plus there's these videos and photos of themselves in black/brown face. I can't imagine that looks good on a model's resume.
Also, these poor girls who were desperate to get their footing in the model industry, now have to be ready at all times for if they suddenly become relevant again and get called out for things they were forced to do by contract
There were a couple girls talking about how they felt america's next top model actually hurt them as models and that people in the industry kind of thought it was a joke..
Which I can kind of see and really is unfortunate.
they thought they were doing something to kickstart a career..
And they're just being berated in blackface and being blackballed from the industry.
I've always kind of wondered what the models' actual reaction to this photoshoot was, instead of what was edited for the show. It seems like at least a few of them would've been uncomfortable. Mr. Jay said that he thought Tyra was out of her mind for doing this.
ehh i don’t think anyone really blames the models.. those who’ve kept up with this show over the years are well aware of how it operates 😣🫠
I’m Native American, and here’s my thoughts: disgraceful. We are not a costume. Every bead, every feather is blessed and sewn in by prayer. They are earned and to be worn with cultural pride, not to be mocked or portrayed. I don’t know how the headdress is made, but that part doesn’t matter if it’s used on a non-native American woman, period. I used to like ANTM, but that was before I grew up and realized how offensive this truly was.
I could be wrong, but aren't native american headpieces no matter from what tribes pretty much sacred and only to be worn by certain people in ceremonys today? And isn't it an insult to just wear them if you aren't given permission even if you are Native American?
It's interesting because in scottish culture you aren't allowed to wear 3 eagle feathers unless you are a clan chief aswell. i found it really interesting that those two very geographically apart cultures share this.
Correct me if I am wrong, I am really interested in hearing about other cultures and want to be educated on topic that I have no personal history off.
@@TemariNaraannaschatz you are correct. Back in the day, it was actually rare for Native Americans to wear large headdresses like that unless they were worn by Native American leaders, chiefs and warriors. Every single feather was earned by those whom showed immense bravery and honor, whether in battle or hunt.
@@imagecarolyn Since hunting today is illegale (illEGALE, sorry had to make that joke), are those who are still worn then passed down or do those who still get the honor to wear them have to collect them from young eagles who haven't left the nest yet?
@@TemariNaraannaschatz Headdresses are usually passed down to children, but there is actually a waiting list for fresh materials. The ones who make the headdresses and any other items need a special permit that will allow them to order any parts from an eagle. Whenever an eagle dies naturally, there's a refuge in the Rocky Mountains that accepts the remains and then distributes the feathers, bones, and claws to the ones on the waiting list. Only tribal members may obtain the permit and they can only give their creations to other tribal members. It's very strictly regulated.
@@chinadollsyndrome That makes sense given that sadly egales are endangered these days, and I love to see people keeping their traditions up like this, without any animals being harmed.
Thank you so much for answering!
As a Greek person, no, we are not called Grecian, Tyra. We're Greek. And no, nobody walks around with a golden olive branch headpiece to go grocery shopping, I'm literally screAMING
Έλληνες! But I think this will break poor Tyra's software :D
Ακριβώς!!!🤣
As a Mexican, I just don’t know what to say 🙃
@@frappoGarcia it was sad, Mexican culture has some much more to offer, yet they couldn't be further away from it with this cultural monstrosity they created.
I am Greek too and this is the worst Greek representation I ever saw!
Not only is the “Native American” dress offensive because it’s turning a culture into a costume. It’s lazy. There are thousands and thousands of tribes and they each have their own culture and fashion/clothing which is rooted in where they are from geologically. The Hopi are going to have different dress from the Osage, who are going to look different from the Karuk, who have a completely different style from Tlingit or Haida. It’s offensive and it’s so lazy. I’m sure the Indian style dress is the exact same where it’s a vast geographic region with multiple cultures but one stereotype keeps being used.

Using a war bonnet, too... I can't. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@drakonius95 oh, so we can be called a "distraction" or told to "go back to the rez"? Colonizer, please.

@@_nikkiknox2852 i know that was just so wrong on so many levels.
exactly!! it’s like they picked the ONLY thing the know from the Native American culture. LITERALLY this was for war. and all tribes are different. there’s no reason to have them all stereotyped the EXACT SAME??? if she wanted someone to look Native American (bc that sure tf did NOT) GET SOMEONE FROM THE CULTURE. have the girls do who they are and plan ahead. there’s no reason to make someone something they aren’t. it’s offensive to the race/culture and ALSO to those poor girls.
Tyra: "It's too commerical."
Me: This is too stereotyped and offensive.
fr. preach 👏👏
Right
The amount of culturally offensive material in that a.n.t.m. episode was crazy
And people didn't talk about it nearly as much as they should have purely because Tyra is black. Having her shoot this one was a tactic. People are waaay less likely to call out racially offensive behavior when it's a person of color doing it. That's just a fact, but at least we are making some progress on that now.
@@Lindseyisloony That is not a fact. People knew something was not right, but now we have a better understanding of how to respect cultures, ethnicities, and history by letting people be themselves without judgement. It ain't perfect, but far more open than it was back in 2010.
@@Lindseyisloony That's what I was thinking, those shoots were straight up racist 😐

We cancel people all the time but how did we miss Tyra? The way she treats her models, especially the black ones, is disgusting.
The ignorance of Tyra is astounding. She is a woman of color herself. How disrespectful can you be. You are in a position of power. ACT LIKE IT
Half the time I think it's the big wigs above tyra pulling the strings
Sometimes I think she's forced to do that but half of the time I think she forgets she's black
just bc shes black doesnt mean she´s not privileged and born into it.
Just because Tyra is black doesn’t mean nor does it automatically guarantee that she is capable of empathy or free from bias.
@@Nellzurkat but couldn’t she just refuse??
As an Egyptian I can confirm that she is definitely not dressed “Egyptian”
💯
I’m Moroccan and i have never seen an dress like that not even close. If someone asked me from which culture that dress was I wouldn’t know.
Tbh, the dress looks very similar to a poncho garment that Navajo children wore in like the 1890s
“Jennifer was a mess. I was uninspired.” Tyra. You put this model in blackface then call her a mess. Idk what this was even supposed to accomplish for these girls.
Torture, it was meant to torture these girls
Looking back, I think all these stunts were just various degrees of torture. But seriously, Jay even said something about how emotions would show on her face.
They look like those aliens from 'The Time Machine'. The whole thing is a mess. 19:47 is a good photo though. I agree with Jessica.
THANK YOU!! This video (the ANTM) was so disgusting to watch. I feel bad she had to go through the whole thing. I’m shocked Tyra still had a career after all this sh*t. She put all these girls in blackface without teaching them the cultures yet expects them to get into character? Disgusting.
Forreal. I think a lot of the girls didn’t do so well because they were uncomfortable for valid reasons. 🙄
Controversial: Tyra got away with wayyyy too much and really needed to face backlash. This whole show was a joke
That's 100% true. Her apology was a joke too
Controversial why? This show was a hot mess
It was reality show, not really modeling or mentoring. I think the crazier it was, the more people watched, etc.
In the Netherlands they have Hollands Next Top Model and Nigel is also a judge here. Its a legit modelling competion the programs basically only share the same name.
In the dutch version they actually teach the contestants about the modeling world. How to pose and walk etc
they even book them real jobs help them build a real portfolio and its not so weird.
So for me now watching clips of the original I am soooo in shock
Is was a sick experiment to exploit budding models and push them to do dramatic and extreme shoots for ratings
My favorite part is when they said "eagles soar" and they did what movies always did and play a red-tailed hawk call 😂... man I work in wildlife conservation and this even insulted the birds 🤣
Hahaha I love how when films do that with “lion” roars too when often it’s a tiger’s
💀 🤣
Poor bird
Man, I forget how wild the 2000s were. I mean, there’s NO WAY you’d get away with doing this now. Ohhh this is so, so bad.
Becasue in 2000s we weren't so PC and scared to offend one another. But she is a black women so it's OK. If this was s white woman then the Woke SJWs would want her head!!!
The way she described slavery as “people who immigrated” 💀
You do realize that Hawaii was made into a U.S territory nearly 40 years after slavery was officially abolished. Can we not equivocate every brown person as being slaves? Can we not? Is it possible?
It's not slavery in the " steal the brown people" but slavery in the human trafficking sense. They still died, lived and worked horrible conditions, and were separated from their families and cultures. It's slavery just not in the way my ancestors were enslaved.
@@geekfreak2000 They . . Migrated . . .by choice . . . For the jobs that were there. Do you think working class people are just these paper dolls that have every single choice made for them, and they have no agency? Is this how you see yourself? That isn't healthy.
Scape Goat Initially, countries sent contract workers to Hawai’i, but few workers actually finished their contracts and many fled to the mainland. This was because the contracts allowed plantation overseers to punish the workers if they were not satisfied, and this fell into the contract conditions. “On June 14, 1900 Hawai‘i became a territory of the United States. This had no immediate effect on the workers pay, hours and conditions of employment, except in two respects. The labor contracts became illegal because they violated the U.S. Constitution which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude.” (Center for Labor Education & Research University of Hawai‘i - West O‘ahu)
@@Geminilion100 I don't think it was like that.
(Insert from the history of labour in Hawai'i - University of Hawaii system)
The Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society organized to protect the interests of the plantation owners and to secure their supply of and control over cheap field labour. The first group of Chinese recruited came under five-year contracts at $3.00 a month plus passage, food, clothing and a house. An advance of $6 was made in China to be refunded in small instalments.
From the beginning there was a deliberate policy of separation of the races, pitting one against the other as a goal to get more production out of them.
The President of the Agricultural Society, Judge Wm. Lee, advised the planters in these words:
To all those planters who can afford it, I would say, procure as many labourers as you can, and work them by themselves, as far as possible separate from the natives, and you will find that, if well managed, their example will have a stimulating effect upon the Hawaiian, who is naturally jealous of the coolie and ambitious to outdo him."6
The backbreaking work was 26 days a month and 10 or more hours per day. Fierce overseers, known as Luna, rode on horses carrying whips which they were not hesitant to use on the workers.
The planters were determined to obtain and hold a "stable" labour force, and in this, the planters had the assistance of the law
(I am not a person of Hawaiian culture so I decided not to alter it so to reduce any misconceptions I may have)
They sad part is, if someone spoke up and said that they weren’t comfortable doing this shoot, they would get points deducted, yelled at and probably kicked off
Yay that the sad fact
Oh they definitely would have kicked off anyone who spoke out or refused to participate.
If she docked points from them for complaining about sexual harassment and hypothermia, then she defiantly wouldn’t care about this.
Definitely. They would have been told that they have a negative attitude or "not want this enough ".
Yeah but dont those women can think?! even before they get into the show, its clear that they'll have to do stupid things, things they dont like, etc.
I dont like shows like this. They are from the beginning on completly messed up
They had such diverse looking models, they could’ve played up the models’ heritage and done a great job but nooooo no no let’s impersonate other cultures and RACES! Jeez
This does help to prove that celebrities (models, artists etc.) aren’t always in control of what they wear because they feel like they might be barred from future jobs by saying no to certain people.
I was so confused by Tyra's speech at the beginning, like... How little research did they do? The Suga Caine industry was awful and ab*sive to its employees. It wasn't some nice little get together where everyone had a nice time. People suffered and now they're further disrespecting that legacy with blackface??? Who approved this? How are you that ignorant?
I was wondering if anyone would mention that most of these people were forcefully brought there as slaves and not as a fun get together.
i was looking for this comment.
Never mind what was done to the Indigenous people in Hawaii when the sugar cane industry was started there. I guess screw the people who were murdered/enslaved/abused though. The indigenous people in “America” just moved to make space for the illeg... conqu... invad... explorers😒🙄
THANK YOU. That part infuriated me so much. That was the most whitewashed, polished, inaccurate description of the sugar cane industry i have ever heard. This whole photoshoot was so disrespectful from beginning to end
I figured, it was not as "let's go grow sugar cane " as it was presented. This whole photoshoot is a dumpster fire
Why is everyone so dark? They know that Greek people and Hispanic people can be light skin??
lol yea it's like they missed the memo that greece is in EUROPE and "Hispanic" is way to general and a bunch of different races, and mixes of ethnicities
Right, my Greek family is actually very light skinned. A lot of people are darker if they’re farmers, but that’s just a tan lol
Idk Mexican isn't a race I really don't know why that they keep saying its a race,
like I'm Mexican and I'm really light, almost all my family is darker, I have Asia-mexican friends also black Mexicans and that's not even mentioning that they only say Mexican not even Latin America
So can Native American people. I myself am fairly light skinned, even though both of my parents are quite dark. Skin tone doesn’t always equate ethnicity/race. But what else do we expect from ANTM?
Because they're not trying to learn anything from any of those cultures 😒. The "Mexican" dress was not Mexican either, it was not even colorful, so they represented the idea of Mexico that they had on their heads, and stereotypically we are portraited with dark skin, which is true some mexicans have dark skin, but there are a lot of other skintones and ethnicities in Mexico. So they are not really representing Mexico, or Greece, or anywhere/anyone, is just a horrible jicksaw of stereotypes and cultural apropiation.
This episode was wild, they set out to mock every group they could. None of the models needed to be darkened to get this shoot done. Meaning some producer signed off knowing they didn’t have to darken anyone they just wanted to play in dark makeup for shock value.
The dark makeup didn't make them look any more exotic. You can tell they weren't the actual culture.
After all these atrocities, as a European I feel a little left out!
I was waiting for them to bring some wall paint and just brushed a poor model white, put her on a toga and throw a spanish peineta at her with some Ikea furniture in the background 👀
Exactly what I was going to say, there is beauty in all cultures and as "well traveled" as Tyra portrays herself to be, this shoot made her look as uncultured and ignorant as they come.
dont give them any ideas....
Most of the “races” they portray are nationalities, not even races.
Exactly!! 😠🙄
Trust me, as a Nigerian American, many Americans fail to see the distinction between race, ethnicity, and nationality.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Yet another reason why the face-painting didn’t make any sense
Thank you
And that is not okay.
I'm starting to believe the girls who were not "feeling" this shoot knew it was wrong and were simply afraid of voicing their concerns in fear of backlash from Tyra.
I was thinking this the whole time. How are you supposed to be in a good headspace when you know you’re being “forced” (not really forced but Tyra can be really cruel if she wants to be) into something you know ONE, can cause some serious backlash down the line... TWO, is offensive to so many cultures... and THREE, you’re not even getting to be yourself they are literally changing your ethnicity.
Absolutely. The whole time I was thinking… what would Tyra do if someone refused to do this shoot??
Your feelings would be on point

@@mem2bam they weren’t doing that, they were actually changed their race.
@@mem2bam Well there is a very big difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Cultural appreciation is when someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally, and end up wearing part pf their fashion, agreat example of this is "Avatar: The last Airbender", whixh studied all about asian culture to understand it correctly and be able to translate it to TV. Appropriation on the other hand, is simply taking one aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your own personal interest, like what Tyra is doing, she doesn't know or care about the cultures she is supposed to be representing, she just did this because she wanted and she could.
Hope I solved your doubts
"a lot of people emigrated to get jobs" no baby that was slavery
Thank you 👏👏👏 As someone who lives where sugar was shipped and processed, we need to acknowledge our shameful past. While I live in a deprived area, our neighbouring city profited wildly off of the sugar trade, and our town profited from the employment. It was here where the atrocities took place.
Sadly most people who live here now have no clue about their history and involvement. This is the sort of thing that should be taught in school.
If you wanted to do this subject justice they could have photographed the girls with smashed hands, sunburned, whip wounds, and missing fingers. If you wanna take photos in a sugar cane field and talk about race then show justice and respect instead of being disrespectful.
@Lauren La Rue so not slavery technically but not any better
Not sure how old you are but if you did your research, you would know that people willingly moved to the US and UK for work. Not only that people moved to India and Africa to start businesses. It wasn't just slavery.
THATS WHAT I SAID!!! 😂😭LMFAO 😭😂
This is weird, but i just found your videos and i was binge watching during depression and I struggle with just going and showering and getting dressed nice, but we look kinda similar, and have the exact same hair, and when i see your videos and you look so nice then i am excited and motivated to get myself done up. I watch these every morning now
I'm Native American. I have a lot to say on the topic.. but I'll keep it short.
I think there's a lot of natives out there who don't live on reservations and are raised to reject being native and who aren't taught anything about their culture or history.
I'm one of those people.
This just felt like a kick to the chest. There's always a deep sense of wondering who you are and where you fit in. Even if you reject the beliefs you should still know what you come from.
"They needed someone to work the sugarcanes, so people IMMIGRATED from all over to world to get JOBS!" Thats one way to describe slavery.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. How was this crap on TV, honestly Tyra??
Well in Hawaii they were paid so they did come here for jobs. They were not brought here by force. They were also given a place to live. They lived in communities each their own. Japanese, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, etc...
I think that was a post slavery era where slavery was illegal (but people were still doing it). So without slavery they needed people to work the fields and the immigrants were just the ticket to be exploited. Exploited as in underpaid.
@@yleniamayen I just want to make sure, but you don’t happen to be talking about “coolie” labor, in which (typically Asian) people were often kidnapped/tricked into signing false or misleading contracts, regularly abused with significant mortality rates, charged for the transportation/basic life necessities beyond what they could realistically pay for (exceedingly low compared to the rest of the country, even in similar areas of work), and for which there’s significant relation/similarities to formal slavery... right?
That’s the same thing I said
Couldn’t they have just used the models’ true ancestry? Wouldn’t that have been more interesting?
Yeh instead of this white washed, pathetic attempt at ‘culture’
omg YES that is such great idea!
This.
That's what I was thinking too, but no they needed to throw in at least one ethnicity per girl that would give them an excuse to put them all in blackface 🙄
Aren't they hard to find tho
I think this concept could've been great if they had used the girls actual ethnicities.
I'm not even Tswana but I've never been more offended... the look, the stereotype
It was all more of mockery than anything generally.
She literally just put them all in blackface, for "fashion"
Also there were like 3 different shades to represent 6 people/12 "races"...
-the red-brownish color (used for most of them)
-something that seemed like they mixed the red-brownish color with some white color to make it lighter
-one naturally black girl without changed skin color
Yeah, sure, you are a well traveled world-famous model and don't even realize that people aren't just "black" or "not black"? Even in just the US you can see a huge difference between the skin colors of people considered to be "black". Then they also added ethnicities with olive tones in their natural skin color, different light yellow-ish shades (which are really hard to mix just as a color even if you just want to paint e. g. a japanese person without making them look like a superficial simpson-colored version of asians seen through the eyes of white people a few decades ago), different kinds of whites, various versions of brown etc.
I feel like they tried to cope their mess-up with the skin tones through mixing ethnicities that could lead to almost every skin color as an outcome but even if one wants to look at this mess through that perspective: They failed miserably.
Anyways, if they would've gotten the color palette right it would still not be ok soooo... But at least you would've seen that they put a teeny tiny bit of thought into it or smthg I guess
Next they’re gonna paint one red and call her Native American. No wait, she’ll call them Indian bc she’s racially insensitive at best

I'm Native (Navajo/Diné) and I think the head dress is really sad 😔 not only are head dresses typically reserved for male leaders, but every feather has to be earned.
And even then Indian Country is 573+ nations, all with diffrent cultures. It's really sad to see us limited to just the plains aesthetic
Sorry, I know people are really ignorant about your culture hope people try to be more enlightened 💞
I'm Cherokee /European and i agree with you
As an indigenous person it’s just so sad how we’re always forgotten when it come to important issues but not for Halloween costumes. The costumes just contribute to stereotypes and it’s so sad to see how many cultures and ethnicities they stereotyped.
Im Ojibwe and yes! We are not all plains natives, there are so many cultures within all the tribes and the only thing anyone knows is headdresses, moccasins, and dream catchers... there’s so much more than that
I was about to say the same thing, I'm not native but I studied a lot about the culture, and it is so sad and offensive to see them represented like this. No Respect at all.
The trippiest part about the "photo critiques" is I have it on good authority, from the girls Ive met that were on that show, is that the Tyra/the judges would many times choose THE WORST photo for the "critique" when they were much better photos that they could have chosen.
I think they mentioned Obama as the most famous “Hapa” because he’s from Hawaii. He went to Punahou schools here. So I’m assuming she means he’s the most famous person from Hawaii.
Fun fact: Barack Obama is actually mixed!! He's from Hawaii but his mom was white and his dad was black

I was so annoyed that the show was almost fetishizing mixed people, and just handing out races and skin tones to people who have not had to deal with the hardship of that appearance. It's almost as if these models were so excited because they got to dress up for a day, and be "exotic" without knowing the history behind these ethnicities.
I think for the models they were most likely expected to show they are excited as they are on a reality tv show. They might have not known much about the ethnicities they were asked to represent but I'm sure they all realized how wrong and disrespectful this challenge was. That is why you can see how uninspired and uncomfortable most of them looked. I put all the blame on the show authorities. They should've known better. What boggles me the most is how tone deaf and insensitive Tyra is, considering she herself is a POC
Yes, maybe cause if they showed like any disappointment, they would be deemed as racist by Tyra

And the word "exotic," like Hawaii is part of the USA, and these people would still be American, not like some foreign doll that you admire. Exotic is often used to talk about things form far away, often in places that don't have a large population, like exotic fruit. But not people.
You made it sounds like being wild and barbaric is a bad thing 😑. My ancestors are wild, hold spear, ride an elephant, and they are super cool doing all of these. How is being wild and barbaric, a bad thing? I think it is super cool because that is what they are 😎
@@andromedamessier3176
Because portraying people of colour as being barbaric and dangerous has been propaganda that has been spread for years to justify the racism and oppression those minorities have faced. The colonisers demonized the natives , that yes DID use spears and bows in battle , so that the taking of their land and the brutality of their people could be justified.
@@the_spit_on_grandmas_flabb5379 lol sorry I’m laughing so hard because it’s the first time I heard something like this “propaganda.” Sure compare those spear to the colonizer gun and tank, we are just a tiny speck. That is why you shouldn’t call them that. How is that any different than the propaganda of being wild and barbaric is bad, so we should invade them.
You see how similar it is. To me I’m proud of my ancestors way of life and history. We’re wild, barbaric. We hunt live together. We went on to build temple.

I’m Mexican and the “attire” looks nothing like any traditional clothing, the colors are way off, there’s no mixing of such colors, we have pops of color and they are bright and contrast each other, that embroidery isn’t Mexican at all (although thank God we’d have enough of our traditional embroidery being stolen, non-credited and underpayed ahem Carolina Herrera, Louis Vuitton, Hermès...)
Mexicans and Greeks can be light skinned, have blue eyes and blonde hair. No need to darken her skin.
What blew my mind the most was Tyra having the NERVE to say “Think about Egypt, the people, what they’d been through” ??????????
Can’t speak for other cultures but this is beyond offensive. “Fashion” is not excuse to be racist, insulting other cultures, their religion and beliefs (Native Americans for example). BYE.

So they had the sense not to lighten the skin of Sundai, but felt it was appropriate to paint the other girls in blackface? Also the nerve of Tyra to claim to be knowledgeable about any of these cultures when the costumes were the most shallow and superficial representations of cultures 🥴 also I'm getting major deja vu from the "East Indian" girl from the previous race swap shoot.
Dang I didn’t even catch that 🤦🏽♂️
Tyra thinks she's an expert in everything. I really love the location of this shoot and I'm mad that they ruined it with all the cultural appropriation.

I just found your channel through your video on the harassment in that Top Model body wash shoot, and it's so great to see a photographer (especially a woman with Arabic heritage) bring her perspective on these things. The fact that these ideas were green lit, is so tone deaf it blows my mind!
I could have understood if it was in Scandinavia in the 90s, as the knowledge of blackface and race face (and cultural appropriation) were almost non-existent here due to the lack of accessibility to information about it (as Internet didn't become a common commodity for everyone until the mid/late 2000 here), but in the US? what is it that you're not getting about a competition? Not everyone can be a winner. And the show has proven that you don't have to win to be able to start a career.
@@DSHT88 This comment wasn't about it being a competition, or that people lost, but on how the show treated its contestants DURING the competition, win or lose, that no matter what the girls would have to have a very independent, aware, and critical understanding of what was happening not to be affected personally by all the things said and done to them.
As commented in the video- it was somehow ALWAYS the girls' fault. NEVER the show's obviously and the girls could never really defend themselves in that kind of set-up. When you add editing and cuts that will cut out any provocation from the show's side, but possibly edit for drama, the girls are not in an enviable position.
I remembered watching this as a kid and thought the outfits and everything was so pretty.
Looking back now I'm like OMG I was impressionable as a kid and didn't see anything wrong with this at all. At that time, I especially loved the native American headdress, and it had part to do with I knew I was part native American but never knew anything about them (my great grandmother was native and taken from her home when she was 5 and put in an orphanage. So she didn't remember any of her culture so she didn't pass anything down to her kids).
But after growing up and doing my own research into some of these cultures and just not believing everything on TV it's been an eye opener to see just how bad this shoot was on many levels. And how little kids watching this could see nothing wrong with it at all.
(Hate to say it, I grew up idolizing tyra. And believed what she did was good and this show was amazing. Now it's so cringy)
I have seen this episode and reactions to this episode multiple times, but it still makes my jaw drop every time...
Why didn’t they turn Sundai’s skin white, but had no problem doing blackface and darkening on everyone else’s skin?
my thoughts exactly..it just looks like to me they're taking any and every opportunity to paint the white girls brown LMAO
Good point
Because us white people aren't exotic looking enough. Lol I hate this show.
Or give people "cultures" that are closer to their own? I cosplay, and like, one or two shades darker or lighter isn't that bad, but deliberately making someone who is light skinned and blonde, into someone dark skinned with black hair, is the kind of thing that people have been banned from cosplay events for. It's really sad that this kind of thing was on TV. Like did they stop teaching about slavery and minstrels and that kind of racism based around blackface?
