  • You'll see a slew of abandoned farms and homesteads as you make your way East on Highway 40 and the town of Kremmling Colorado fades into your rearview mirror, you’ll pass the area known as “Old Park Colorado”. Taking a right onto CO-134 you will begin your ascent through the Gore Pass and make your way deep into Old Park Colorado.
    This land was originally used by the Ute Indians, who camped in the valley for more than 1,000 years prior to the arrival of the first white settlers. During the warm months, they migrated from Utah to hunt the Bison in the Gore Pass. Early settlers; fur trappers, observed the Ute bathing in the local springs. But soon after this, they disappeared from the area with no written trace. However; clues to their existence remain evident and are of interest to archaeologists to this day...

    Yup, people who survive in sparsely populated areas, particularly in those early days, couldn't run into town for hardware or whatever, so they made do, reused things---sometimes multiple times. If younger people viewing this don't know about kerosene lamps and lanterns, let me enlighten you: those lamps and lanterns gave off a lot of light in days of yore. My folks bought a used mobile home and parked it on a relative's property in northern Wisconsin as a vacation home. We didn't have electrical service hooked up until the second summer we were there, so we had kerosene lamps to light the place after dark. An avid reader since I was a little Yard Ape, I spent the evenings reading by the light of a lamp with a bright flame inside the glass chimney. I'm sure these hardy folk didn't miss having electricity while it was unavailable to them. Nice explore, Doug.

      Very enlightening indeed! I truly appreciate you sharing your experiences. It really adds valuable details and helps to shape future videos! I never considered how the kerosene lamp would have been interchangeable (depending on the availability of gasoline / electrical generation). As always thanks for sharing one of your well-put and thought out comments. Best wishes!

    • @DerelictDoug
      @DerelictDoug  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you kindly for the feedback (I wonder if we woke Mr. "Routt" up, would he agree?). However; I hear you; "route" is the regional pronunciation. This is very similar in "You-Ray" Colorado.
      Thanks again for your thoughtful comment and best wishes!
