Ohio City Colorado - A Modern Day Ghost Town

  • Ohio City is a “semi-ghost town”, in the Quartz Creek Valley; just a few miles away from the more populated town of Pitkin Colorado. Many of the original homes remain, but the main street has suffered the loss of most of its buildings. Like many Colorado ghost towns, Ohio City; has had a few declines and rebirths. The most recent of which happened in the 2010s.
In fact, I would say this town has the potential to come back. At least the Mother Lode could be brought back at a reduced capacity. The property is still up for sale and is in amazing condition. It had very healthy street traffic when I visited (and I visited off-season). It’s literally move-in ready and is available for just under a million dollars. While this is a steep price, it comes with a boatload of potential.
Today you can find souvenir keychains from the Mother Lode being auctioned off on eBay and are sold as collector's items on Amazon. People from the area still speak fondly of the Mother Lode and would welcome its return. Perhaps with a new set of products, new management, and a slightly less complicated LLC structure this business could once again succeed. And in the process lift this town out of ghost town status.

Hi Doug wow this was incredibly enjoyable I love your informative way of exploring especially of these extremely interesting locations..what an incredible location..I could happily reside here..cute little dog at the end..loved what they did to the old town hall..wonder if the names were people from the mines who passed orr I'm unsure..see yah soon my friend

I am so happy that you appreciate all the information that I add. It takes a long time to do the research and voiceover. If I had the money, I would happily buy the Motherlode-Building and open it back up. I didn't consider the miners, but that is a really good guess and I bet you're right. Thanks again for joining us and best wishes!

As a kid we spent about 10 days vacation every year in Ohio City. Late 1970's and early '80s. The general store building was there then and is the same as shown in the video. I don't think there was any way the new owners added to it. The bar on the right and the liquor store (used to be a laundry I believe) on the left were definitely there and they were all connected inside. It's possible they "improved" them, but they look the exact same as I remember.
We stayed at the cabins/resort you showed at the very end. It was a very nice place back then, run by an older couple. Cabins had kitchens and baths and were very clean although probably considered "rustic" even back then. It seemed to me they were the main and maybe only business the town had, outside of the store.
I have to imagine the reason for the store closing is Gunnison is really only 15-20 mins down the highway, so it's hard to operate a business like then when you can drive a little to Walmart and King Soopers for what you need. I remember even back when we stayed there, we would goto Gunnison to stock up on supplies for camping and whatnot.
Nice, but a little sad to see what Ohio City looks like now. I have to imagine someone could make that store/bar work, but the resort probably was a big part of it's business.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and memories. you would’ve been there just after the improvements were finished. The original building state back to the 1800s and have been approved on since then. You were lucky to have seen the mother load during its peak.
Thanks again and all the best!

Interesting place. I spent three months in Allen's Park, CO, between September and Christmas day. I spent two months in a 2-room cabin at a lodge in Wild Basin on the Middle Fork of the St. Vrain River (now demoted to "Creek") and saw the seasons change from an "Aspen Glow" Autumn to three feet of snow in the fourth week of September. I can't imagine living through a Colorado winter in a 1-room cabin, with an outhouse, carried water, and hovering over a cast-iron stove that burned wood. They were hardy folks back then!

@@DerelictDoug When visiting with my brother and his family in Washington (State), we went to a remote valley with a lake surrounded by evergreens. In it was a tiny log cabin, maybe 10x12 feet inside, with a solid door (no window) and a window about 1x2 feet---maybe---next to it. A man lived there _all alone, for _years,_ enduring Cascade winters! "Made of oak and wang leather was he." I just discovered your channel, Doug, so I have a lot of catching up to do. Cheers!

So I looked up the Remax listing for the restaurant. They really poured a lot of money into the building, now they want just under 1mill for the place. Seeing that their venture didnt do so well, is there hope that they might actually sell it for that much? Love the history, but its very distracting and deviates from the immersion when the music doesnt seem to match the scenery.

    • @DerelictDoug
      @DerelictDoug  4 роки тому +3

From what I saw the building was split into 5 different LLCs. I believe the complication of this is what caused the Motherlodes' demise (but that's just an opinion). If they were to have a centralized owner (one LLC), all of the businesses within the building would share revenue and not compete for the same people.
I think they will come down on the price a little, but not much. The property contains a state of the art kitchen and boasts many amenities not found elsewhere in the area.
Thanks for your feedback on the music and for joining us. Stay safe and all the best!

Last place n the US to have a stage robbery & because of that it was the first time a hand print was used to convict someone in the US. I was there 50 years ago & helped put a new floating floor in the community center.
