I am an alcoholic with bipolar disorder. I took CBT classes while in treatment. It is a useful tool no doubt, but not a cure-all. There are many other resources that I need to use to stay sober and maintain a stable mindset. These include: support groups, prayer, meditation, medication, as well as continuous self-awareness and education.
Thank you very much for this illuminating and encouraging video. I've seen numerous therapists over the years, and some of them have a very brisk CBT style that has always been disheartening to me. It's never gotten beneath the surface of my issues, especially being someone who's been stuck for over a decade. I try to tell myself positive things, but the cynic in me who fears vulnerability never really believes them. Those negative core beliefs are sometimes real tough shells to crack, but without taking them apart, you can't really heal and flourish as a person.
How do we even know these "core beliefs" even exist? Maybe your cynic doesn't actually fear vulnerability, but just has trouble believing something without evidence. Since when is indoctrination a form of therapy?
Hi Barbara, it's so good to have you back! I've missed your wonderful videos, but try to keep in mind your warm, kind, understanding and encouraging lessons to Awaken Joy in all of our lives, especially in these troubling times! Thank you so much. Take care and keep safe❤❤❤
Thank you Mary! And yes, I do keep that in mind - I also have not disappeared - just needing to focus on other parts of my business a bit! All the best :)
I have never ever seen anything even remotely approaching evidence for these "core beliefs". Yet when we sign up for therapy we are continuously hit over the head with this imagined pathology. I became suicidal and they called that "progress".
Thanks. Finally, a therapist who does not think CBT is a wonder cure solving all problems for everybody. (People even told me the fact that I had CBT for almost 5 years with no results was the proof that I need to undergo CBT. Because THE SCIENCE(TM) says CBT works so well. apparently, the fact that CBT did not work on me is no counterargument to this. LOL.)
Yea, a position that can’t be argued with - if it doesn’t work for you, you need more of it! Sorry that happened. I did find EMDR to be more effective overall… wishing you health and healing.
Hi, what are your thoughts on depth psychology (psychodynamic) therapy as an additional alternative to CBT? It seems to me that all this talk of integration is right up their alley.
A woman I was dating with Avoidant traits (and, to be honest I think maybe Aspberger's or ADHD) was doing CBT and she broke up with me...for reasons that were super avoidant and people pleasing. I accepted her break up but I told her explicitly that she needed to do something other than CBT because she has been doing it for 7 years and it really wasn't helping with her core issue of not being able to express anger and to stop people pleasing.
Hi can you help me to answer the counseling therapy limitation. I am also studying psychology am on my 4th year college. Just need a little bit more ideas
Also, CBT with every therapist I've tried (6) and non-CBT with my current psychologist has all been super harmful and damaged my self esteem and core beliefs. 😢 I would really like to find a therapy that could be helpful for me.
Hi: I'd be interested in what other viewers have found helpful - so anyone with recommendations, please post! Here are some to take a look at: amzn.to/33z6pK8, amzn.to/37y1EBG (this one was written quite awhile ago and the language is very dated, but it has timeless wisdom in it and I recommend it a lot). Neither is specific to social anxiety - I don't have one there to recommend.
So when you are finding the feelings arent matching the thoughts even though you have done a lot of processing and rewiring your brain and work on boundaries/self esteem etc -the key is to experience those feelings, really embracing them in order to heal. Is that right?
@@BarbaraHeffernan So you don't think "negative core beliefs" are at the root cause of all suffering? At least it's a big better than this grand unified theory snake oil that's sold by pretty much everyone right now. So it's not that you believe this thing without any evidence is responsible for all our suffering? You just think this thing without any evidence is just responsible for some of our suffering? At least did haven't dived too deep into this swamp of insanity.
How do I sign up for the free webinar and what are the dates. I really liked this video, having worked as a CBT therapist in the NHS since the late nineties!
Terrific - So glad you liked it! The links are in the notes under the video. Under my name, and there is a "show more". It is the first link. See you at the webinar!
Hi: if you are watching on your phone you need to click “more” - right under the title, and a little bit of description pops up, and then click more again. They truly are there!
There's no end to books on the topics. What it boils down to is taking control of management of your inner thought life & choosing to believe things about ourselves, the world we live in, & our place in it that are rational & healthy. It's not always easy, but it really is a simple concept. Social anxiety results when we dont do this process consistently.
Thank you so much for this

Exactly! Very well said.

I did 8 pricey EMDR sessions. All it did was retraumatize me on the worst traumas of my life. Wish I had done CBT or DBT instead.

Hi Clifford! Nice to see you! :). Had a lovely, though unusual, Thanksgiving! How about you?

😢 So sorry to hear that...

'How to be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety' by Ellen Hendrikson was very helpful for me.

Yes, that is part of it. I think that what each person needs to go that next step may vary,, Often true healing happens in relationship as well.

Does CBT help anxiety associated with physical pain or Sensations?
Yes, it can help. Also, EMDR and somatic experiencing can be helpful for somatization.
Look into dysautonomia if the physiological feelings don't change with any of those other techniques either.

So basically your saying it’s down to self discipline…
