Jockeyship and positioning was absolutely key, just as with Shergar Swinburn had his mount PERFECTLY placed to strike the whole trip , Greville Starkey did indeed ride a terrible race , so sad for such a magnificent Horse , covered the last furlong faster than ANY horse has ever done in any electrically timed Derby , as fast as a sprinter at the end of 1.5 miles , incredible
The difference is Swinburn was on a horse who was going to get the trip whatever, but Starkey's problem was at this stage of the horse's career he was far from certain to get the trip. They felt he needed to hold him up to give him the best chance. In the end he more than got the trip and was able to produce a stunning turn of foot from a bad position. Of cause Dancing Brave should have won. But Starkey was in a no win situation because he would still have been blamed for defeat if he had made more use of him and he had not stayed. Still, it was a fantastic race that will never be forgotten. :)
Of course there was a lot of talk at the time of the "hold up" tactics employed , however very few horses ever win a Derby from so far back turning tattenham corner, I cannot remember too many doing that expect the exceptional Golden Fleece in 1982 but even he was not as far back as Dancing Brave , no excuses it was a ghastly ride from Starkey
covered the last furlong than any other horse has ever done?? Watch the race again the unluckiest horse in the race was Mashkour who made 2-3 lengths on DB in the final furlong, that was the only time he saw daylight!! Pause the race at 2:58 the horse in yellow on the left of the screen with the white nose,he must be 3 or 4 lengths behind and DB has first run!!
great spot mashkour got impeded at least 4 times finished 3rd
beaten about 3 lengths from the winner ,dancing brave had a clear run through the race enough said i think mashkour picked up an injury during
the race a cut or something very, very unlucky loser
@@WESSERPARAQUAT actually pourn moi and erhaab won the race from just as far back, both of them much inferior horses to dancing brave, so your argument doesn't add up
The best horse didn't win but Shahrastani did do the Derby double (7l winner of the Irish) so was a decent horse

Starkey rode a shocker, camber or no camber. Rode like a non stayer, with 15 lengths to find, in what became a 3f sprint in the straight.
Not a great ride from Greville but what must be considered alongside that is DB didn't handle the track at all. They crawled for the 1st mile and the race essentially turned in a 4 furlong burn up with those 'out the back' significantly disadvantaged.
mad, so much history in this race, the end of guy harwood who was an incredible trainer poor greville too if only !
Dancing Brave, brilliant horse, but not the first not to handle the track. Always instinctive to blame the jockey, but I think GS was blameless here. If DB had not finished so close, the horse would have been blamed instead.
I don't think it as so much that the horse didn't handle the track and more that he was ridden like a non-stayer and so then due the the number of runners, had to challenge out so wide.
Feel sorry for Greville Starkey , as it's all he is remembered for , and he was an excellent jockey . When the pace is slow , you need to be near the pace .
Slowly run Derby and dancing brave LEFT WAY to much to do!

666jockie Agree with it. It was close but not close enough. Dancing Brave went on to become quite possibly one of the star horses of 1986, the Arc De Triomphe in particular.

I said that in 1986 and I haven't seen a worse ride since!
Don't talk rubbish. If there had been a DB pacemaker it would not have become just a 3f sprint. The winner still had enough stamina left to get there 1st. DB was always going to sit in that position and not start moving til 3f left, exactly the same as Eddery did in the Arc. But because no pacemaker that winner was still full of it. In the Arc the derby winner was overturned due to this.

People say Dancing Brave didn't handle Tattenham Corner. He seemed to handle the camber in the straight well enough. GS rode a terrible race imo.
