Not one of Pat's finest moments, this. He seemed to think he had it won, but when he lets the horse down he doesn't find as much as expected. Instead of trying to win cleverly it would probably have been better had he kicked on and got the lead earlier.
Eddery went from asking the horse for nothing in particular to asking him for 100% in the space of 2 strides which is not a good idea. I can't be too harsh on him though; the leaders dropped away abruptly and he found himself in front way earlier than he probably expected.
How good was Secreto? It's a shame he never raced again to find out. But he ran a close closing 3rd to Sadlers Wells in the Irish Guineas, which was his only loss in 4 starts. He must have been a pretty good horse. These two finished well clear of the rest. I think we all do El Gran Senor a disservice by not recognising Secreto was a good colt. I think it's unfair to call him an inferior Derby winner. How sad Secreto, Pebbles, Sadlers Wells, Chief Singer and El Gran Senor didn't all race against each other through this seasons summer and autumn.
He went to stud because they knew it was the best he could ever do - Lester denies he whispered “ miss me ? “ after the race to MVOB but it is a good story
@@noddywoodhead Surely was Norman and also the late 80s too. 1970s Momentous thou best ever Derby finish in my view'1972 what a ride Lester gave Roberto to just get up. Pat should have gone for home two out and not give Secreto the chance to look him in the eye, at least then El Gran Senor would have had a length or two advantage going into the final furlong, don't forget he wasn't a non stayer as he won the Irish derby with ease over 1m 4f
I totally agree with you. Pat seemed very confident as he passed the 2 furlong post, but his colt's final drive wasn't as good as he expected. I have to admit that Secreto was supremely brave.
Didn't he have a reputation for stopping when he got the lead too early. Most "experts" say he found the lead too early and should have been 6th or 8th entering the straight not 4th and then should have sprinted past in the last 1.5f. He should have been starting his run from 4th or 5th at the 2f pole, not taking over the lead from tiring horses.
Can't believe it got beat . I still thought it was going to win 40 years later .
The first sponsorship of the Derby, in this case, Ever Ready and a thrilling finish here.
Pat Eddery a much missed Legend, but Showboating Here proved Very costly tho.....
Exactly, the commentator said he's looking around for dangers but he was being cocky
Still had plenty of time to kick on and put the race to bed but just got out battled.
Overhyped
@@gazowen7310 If you mean El Gran Senor, I doubt it.

El Gran Senor looks a good thing , i think he will win it 10L eased down

Que abuso del jinete, exagero con los latigazos.
Secreto Jockey Belted the Hell out of the horse to win. Awful to watch in 2020.

Irish Derby is run on a flat track unlike the undulations of Epsom and the uphill climb in the last furlong. He just didnt stay at Epsom.
