Brilliant ride from Eddery. Took the horse to the front and crossed the path of the second without the need of a stewards enquiry. One of the greatest horses ever at coming off of the pace.
I come from the Frankel generation but my Dad is Dancing Braves and even though my dad agrees Frankel is a freak he also maintains to this day that bar a couple of iffy jockey rides Dancing Brave was the best of all time. Watching these videos makes me realize the heart and fight this horse had was incredible.
Francis, some will tell you that ALL these charismatic horses have an element of "freak" about them. Arkle, Borough Hill Lad, Desert Orchid. All very different from the rest, had a unique element about them. To me, it's the joy of racing. Billions spent on breeding, and it is still unpredictable. :)
The key to understanding Dancing Brave was the quality of the fields he ran in. 1986 was probably had the deepest quality of horse in the history of British racing, maybe 10 middle distance horses in Europe better then any horse Frankel beat.
Your Dad is correct over 1.4 DB would have beaten any other horse in history he was as fast as a 5f sprinter but had great stamina to , frankel could not have got near him at 1,4

Upto that trip though, the ratings he has been allocated by official handicappers / organisations confirm there isnt a horse in history he would have had any problem 'getting near to'

His Highness Prince Khalid Abdullah, also owns the blue hen,slightly dangerous and her champion miler son warning,commander in chief. All were superb race horses.
+Smilodon Tiger Starkey knew how to ride him too and did far more right on him than wrong. It was just one of those things in the Derby and in a smaller field when coming from the back, he wouldn't have had to have initially challenged so wide and so far up the camber, which probably cost him the race more than just the fact he was held up. Bear in mind too that it's easier to ride a horse over 12f once you already know it gets the trip, whereas Starkey had to ride Dancing Brave in the Derby on a very quirky course, having only gone as far as a mile previously.
The disrespect for Starkey over that derby ride is still living today but give me Greville Starkey over Luke Morris , Adam Kirby and any other bump jockey that rides today ! I believe Greville will always be remembered for that one ride but none the less he was an excellent jockey who carried his own very well in a decade of unbelievable jockeys Willie Carson , Lester Piggott , Pat Eddery etc the list is endless .
We'll never know. There were doubts about Dancing Brave's stamina to last 12 furlongs before The Derby. Starkey took the bullet for the failure and was jocked off in favour of Eddery.

Eddery had a stinker here. Got bumped back on the turn in, trapped in on the rails, hit the front too soon (albeit he did not he would idle in fairness) but still won and thats what matters. Starkey rose a stinker in the Derby and got into a self caused pocket in the Eclipse 3 out. DB had no luck at times.
DB beat quality , Frankile beat dross. As a 4 yo, I think Frank was the greatest, but as a 3 yo he was only great and definitely gets beaten in the 2000G by DB ,Frankles 2000G is the most overrated performance in racing history.
Dancing Brave was a true great but my observations of this race suggest to me that comparing and ranking the generations is almost impossible. Triptych is a wonderful mare and she provides a fantastic yardstick. Beaten out of sight by Oh So Sharp at Epsom and a similar distance behind Reference Point in the 1987 King George compared to DB in 1986.
I remember the horses in the paddock for this race and it was obvious that Shahrastani was not going to win. He was awash with sweat looked edgy and didn't give his true running.
Tryptych was a fantastic mare true. She was last but that proves much yes however the ground she favoured was soft to heavy , in these conditions she was almost impossible to beat.
John Mc crickick would’ve won the derby on dancing brave but it was like carrying 20 stone with starkey on it it was a time for him to shine on dancing brave but he blew it badly

The horse lost weight travelling to the US.Also got hit in the eye with turf during the race and was tired after a 6 month season. It was just ll too much. He nearly died not long after the Breeders cup due ti sickness. In those days they took them weeks before which they now know is the wrong thing to do. They now fly them in and race asap. Theatrical who was ahead of him in the BC was just a decent level Irish horse. A fit DB woukd of mullered Manila.

However, his victory in the King George over one and half miles took a lot out of him, he was beaten by Roberto who had already won the Derby. The Brigadier v Frankel at a mile, hard to call. It's not conclusive to compare racehorses who run at different distances. You have to compare like with like. How about Harbinger, would Dancing Brave have beaten him at Ascot? I doubt it. That horse had wings that day.

If Frankel and Dancing Brave were to meet at their best on good going Frankel would be favourite and would probably win. I think he would certainly win barring accident. I adore DB I love hsi glamour, his flash and his guts. I loved him when I started watching racing but Frankel is the more powerful racing horse.
