My son passed away in February due to cancer. I made it through the summer because someone asked me if I knew what butterflies represented. I spent my entire summer talking to the butterflies and just watching them because I felt like he could here me.
Now its fall and I am struggling because I feel like he has left me. What I wouldnt give to here his voice one more time.

My wife died 17 days after our son was born. This is so accurate. It’s been 41 months since she died and I still have these waves hitting me. The last major wave was Halloween. My kids did their first trick or treating. I looked at them and watched the fun they were having and the tears just started. I couldn’t help thinking about their mother and how much she’s missing. The waves are less frequent but they still come.

1:49 "These waves don't crash on us, they break on us....Cause we are strong". "I know you would die for me dad, but now I need you to live for me". I told myself this several times every single day for the first year after loosing my 18 yr old son in a car crash to a dui driver. As a father & marine nothing, nothing can prepare you for this unspeakable pain & complete brokeness. I would get lost at stores I've went to for 30 years. This description is spot on. Eventually you can identify these waves & how to somehow navigate through them. You find just the slightest glimmer of hope & a purpose again
If I didn't have my younger girls who somehow seen I was over life grab & tell me one day "dad, we need you, please don't go we lost mike we can't loose you too" I don't know if I'd of made it these past 3 yrs. When I seen their eyes & heard them words I knew that I had to keep fighting. Just somehow get through each day. Most were long & excruciating. I couldn't answer that question "can I now live for them" I didn't know if I could do it. You don't heal they aren't a broken bone. You find some kind of purpose whatever it may be put your energy into it & honor them in your own way. A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved a life with love is a life that's been lived. It's not goodbye, just goodbye for now.

I lost my son a little over two years ago to cancer. He was only two and half years old and dealt with pain that I still can’t fathom... Someone shared this story with me, so I thought I’d share. PEACE.
    The Brave Little Soul
    By: John Alessi
Not too long ago in Heaven there was a little soul who took wonder in observing the world. He especially enjoyed the love he saw there and often expressed this joy with God. One day however the little soul was sad, for on this day he saw suffering in the world. He approached God and sadly asked, "Why do bad things happen; why is there suffering in the world?"
God paused for a moment and replied, "Little soul, do not be sad, for the suffering you see, unlocks the love in people's hearts." The little soul was confused. "What do you mean," he asked. God replied, "Have you not noticed the goodness and love that is the offspring of that suffering? Look at how people come together, drop their differences and show their love and compassion for those who suffer. All their other motivations disappear and they become motivated by love alone."
The little soul began to understand and listened attentively as God continued, "The suffering soul unlocks the love in people's hearts much like the sun and the rain unlock the flower within the seed. I created everyone with endless love in their heart, but unfortunately most people keep it locked up and hardly share it with anyone. They are afraid to let their love shine freely, because they are afraid of being hurt. But a suffering soul unlocks that love. I tell you this - it is the greatest miracle of all. Many souls have bravely chosen to go into the world and suffer - to unlock this love - to create this miracle for the good of all humanity."
Just then the little soul got a wonderful idea and could hardly contain himself. With his wings fluttering, bouncing up and down, the little soul excitedly replied. "I am brave; let me go! I would like to go into the world and suffer so that I can unlock the goodness and love in people's hearts! I want to create that miracle!"
God smiled and said, "You are a brave soul I know, and thus I will grant your request. But even though you are very brave you will not be able to do this alone. I have known since the beginning of time that you would ask for this and so I have carefully selected many souls to care for you on your journey. Those souls will help you create your miracle; however they will also share in your suffering. Two of these souls are most special and will care for you, help you and suffer along with you, far beyond the others. They have already chosen a name for you". God and the brave soul shared a smile, and then embraced.
In parting, God said, "Do not forget little soul that I will be with you always. Although you have agreed to bear the pain, you will do so through my strength. And if the time should come when you feel that you have suffered enough, just say the word, think the thought, and you will be healed." Thus at that moment the brave little soul was born into the world, and through his suffering and God's strength, he unlocked the goodness and love in people's hearts. For so many people dropped their differences and came together to show their love.
    Priorities became properly aligned.
    People gave from their hearts.
Those that were always too busy found time.
Many began new spiritual journeys, some regained lost faith - many came back to God.
    Parents hugged their children tighter.
    Friends and family grew closer.
Old friends got together and new friendships were made.
Distant family reunited, and every family spent more time together.
    Everyone prayed.
    Peace and love reigned.
    Lives changed forever.
It was good. The world was a better place. The miracle had happened. God was pleased.

Jocko nailed this exactly. My mom committed suicide a month after my 24th birthday. There is no greater pain than your creator deciding that they'd rather be dead than live on this earth with you. The waves never stop. But they lose their strength very slowly over time. Find something to do. Keep busy. Live your life. Once in a while a tsunami will hit, but I am strong enough to withstand the storm. Thanks to jiu-jitsu, school, work, caring for other people. Do something. Otherwise, the demons will come.

Thank you @jockowillink and @echocharles. I lost my dad on 11/25/19, and it hurts so much. Death brings about a spectrum of emotions from pure wretched grief to guilt and regret. I feel like I have no one to turn to, so I turn to UA-cam. Sad, isn't it? Despite speaking with my mom and step-dad about my grief, I still keep a little inside. That small bit of emotion, seems to be the most painful, because in there lies the regret and guilt. While I did my best to support my dad and always being there for him during his golden years, now that he's gone, I can't help but feel that I didn't do enough. I feel like I could've done better and tried harder. Now that he's gone, I'll never have the chance to improve on those mistakes in helping my dad. Regret hurts. It cuts deep. Regret especially hurts when it's about not doing something for a loved one as important as a parent.
I only I hope that I will learn from these mistakes, and not repeat them with my mom and step-dad. As you've stated in the video, dwelling is not the answer. I must be strong, I must carry one, and I must forgive myself. I know my dad thought the world of me until his last breathe, but I still can't help but feel sorry, like I did him wrong. Maybe this feeling will never leave me. Maybe I deserve to feel this way for the rest of my life. Maybe like you said, I'll learn to deal with it, because that's what we're supposed to do. These waves are painful, but I know they'll subside and weaken over time. Thank you Jocko and Echo. Both of you provide a true good to the world.
    Respectfully and Sincerely,
    Talon

Turn to Jesus. He loves you more than you could possibly know. Could you say that you are 100% sure that you would have a home in heaven? What are you basing that on? If you are basing it on anything other than your faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, you do not understand God's way to heaven.
The Bible says that we are all sinners. When God created Adam and Eve, He made them perfect without sin, but they chose to disobey God and became sinful in nature. This sin nature was passed down to all humanity.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Our sin separates us from God.
      Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
A holy, righteous God cannot allow sin into heaven. Sin must be paid for and God's price for sin is death, but not just a physical death, but a spiritual death which means separation from God forever in hell.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
In the Old Testament when man sinned, God required the sacrifice of a perfectly spotless lamb as a substitute in the place of the sinner. The blood of that lamb was only a temporary payment for their sin and so this had to be done often. Jesus Christ, God's Son took on flesh, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and offered Himself as that perfect, spotless Lamb and shed His blood as payment for the sins of the whole world.
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Jesus loved us so much He WILLINGLY came and allowed wicked men to spit on Him, mock Him and scourge Him until He was unrecognizable. They stripped him naked, thrust a crown of thorns on His head and nailed His hands and feet to a cross. He hung in agony for hours bleeding, thirsting, struggling for every breath. He died innocently in our place so that we could be saved from going to hell. It was His blood that satisfied the just demands of a holy God. God will not accept anything else.
There is no greater love than that!
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
The good news is that Jesus didn't stay dead in the grave. He came back to life 3 days later just like He promised and He still lives today!
Matthew 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
      6. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Jesus did all this because He wants to give you the FREE gift of eternal life in heaven with Him!
You cannot do anything to earn your own way into heaven. You can't work for it, be baptized for it, go to church for it or try to be good enough for it. It is a FREE gift that God is offering to anyone who will simply receive it by faith.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
      9. Not of works, lest any man should boast.
God said there is only one way to get to heaven, but it is not hard. You must repent, change your mind and admit you are a sinner headed for hell. You must believe that Jesus died and paid for your sin with His own blood on the cross, was buried and 3 days later rose from the dead. Then you must simply call on Him and ask Him to save you.
Romans 10:9 that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
      13. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
None of us deserve God's mercy and grace, but let me warn you that if you reject His FREE gift, you are already condemned and when you die, you will suffer the torment of burning in hell for eternity in a lake of fire where you will be forever separated from God and all that is loving and good.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Please don't wait. Don't take the risk of putting it off until another day, repent, turn to Christ NOW wherever you are at because you aren't guaranteed to live another day on this Earth. Believe God's Word, ask Him to save you and He will!

My dad passed away in January of this year. You’re spot on about waves hitting you, then the calm. I take one day at a time. Most days are good, then for some unknown reason a wave hits me.
Thank you for what you do. You’re impacting lives more than you realize.

I pray my best friend's story will be a help to you. Jesus loves you!
      Precious Memories-By Sonya Lakey
      Family Story
Little did our family of six know that Friday evening, September 24th, 2021, would be the last night our family would be complete. We laughed together, played games, sang, and enjoyed listening as our 16-year-old son, Ethan, played the piano for us. I packed a lunch for Ethan for a church mountain hike he was going on the following day.
My mother (who was visiting from out of state) and I woke early with Ethan on Saturday morning. He hugged me and smiled, never pulling away or rushing me. He got in the car, waved, said he'd see me later and he loved me. It was hard to watch my "new driver" heading out on his own that morning. As Ethan pulled out of the gate, I turned to my mother and said, "It's just so hard letting go." Little did I know how much "letting go" I was really doing. That was the last time I saw Ethan. He did not make it home that evening.
That afternoon, a friend tried to contact my husband, leaving an urgent message to call him back. He tried several times to return the call to no avail. As we were preparing supper, an overwhelming feeling of deep concern for Ethan filled my heart. I quietly blinked back tears. I glanced out the window, half expecting to see a police officer pull up to the house, but no one arrived. However, within a few minutes, a patrol car DID pull into the driveway. In my heart, I feared the worst. My husband and I went out to meet the officer, who confirmed our fears. Hesitantly, he told us our son had fallen off of
a bluff and had succumbed to his injuries. Our hearts were crushed; they still are.
Yet, in all of our brokenness, deep, continual grief and loneliness, our family has such a blessed Hope and assurance that we will see our dear son and brother again. You see, when Ethan was a young boy, he was saved; he put his faith in Jesus alone to forgive his sins and to take him to Heaven when he died. He realized some very important truths from the Bible that he would want to share with you.
      His Story
Everyone is a sinner. Sin is any violation of God’s Law. God is holy, just and righteous, and He cannot allow sin in His presence. Ethan realized that he - like all of us - had sinned; and his sin separated Him from God.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; ” (Romans 3:23)
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12)
He understood that, because of his sin, he deserved to spend eternity in Hell.
“For the wages of sin is death;” (Romans 6:23a) [Wages: price]
“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
Ethan believed that Jesus, God’s Son, paid the price for all sin when He died on the cross - because His sinless sacrifice was the only thing that could satisfy the just demands of a righteous, holy God. Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb, but He arose the third day, triumphant over sin, death, and Hell. Jesus is alive today!
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Ethan was sorry for his sin, repented (turned), and received by faith the free gift that God offered to him.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
“...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)
Because of this great salvation, Ethan lived his life serving Jesus. He worked hard to spread this Good News to the world. He is alive in Heaven with Jesus today; and because of this great HOPE in Christ, we know we will see him again soon - not because he was a great kid, but because of his faith in the great Saviour!
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” (John 10:28)
      Your Story
What about you? What if you had fallen to your death that day - What if you were to die today? Where will you spend eternity - Heaven or the Lake of Fire? There will not be any parties in the Lake of Fire. It is a place of eternal torment for those who reject God's Son.
The Word of God is very clear that there is only One Way to Heaven.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
We did not know that Ethan would step into eternity that day; however, because he put his faith in Jesus alone for his salvation, Ethan was ready to go. Some day - perhaps today - you will take your last breath here on earth, and you will step into eternity. Where you spend eternity is determined by what you do with Jesus Christ. Will you accept Him or reject Him? You are not promised another day or another breath. Eternity begins soon - Are you ready?
“...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” (Acts 16:31b)
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
“(...behold, now is the day of salvation.)” (2 Corinthians 6:2c)

How on earth did this come from a navy seal. I lost my fiancé two months ago after 4 years of dating. Died in her sleep with no known cause of death. My grief counsellor hasn’t said anything like this. Every video I’ve listened to no one hits like this. There is such understanding of what I’m going through in these words. Our societies complete lack of an outlet for healing on this. I just got back from Peru, I took ayahuasca 8 times in the Amazon jungle in search of healing. I highly recommend that to anyone suffering through this. But this video gives the exact roadmap of what I’m going through plus a plan for moving forward. Such deep wisdom

Look after yourself mate, time does heal, if you get the chance jordan peterson has always helped me. When i was depressed after losing both my mum and my aunt to cancer ... I couldn't get out of bed, I broke things down into the smallest piece I could. Brush my teeth, get washed, make breakfast ... if i could do one of those it was a win. Then the next day, if try again but maybe add another bit on. I also went to sought help to speak with someone at grief counselling. Grief is a messy business, it's not something we can just fold up and put away. Like jocko says ... it comes in waves, but eventually through time we get to row the boat and move forward, and tgat doesn't mean you don't love them any less, just means you're processing what happened.
All the best mate. Stay strong and be kind to yourself.

Gospel ... I fell into the abyss after my mum died in 2011 to cancer, then I lost my aunt to cancer in 2016, she was like a mum to me ... the wave analogy I've heard before but JW describes it perfectly ... I turned to drugs, sex, alcohol, eating junk food, all as ways to hide the pain at different times ... I became self destructive at a subconscious level, as work and career remained on point. I was very sad inside, but I had no idea as it all seemed normal. Now in 2019, 2 years ago I decided after my aunt's death I wasn't going to go backwards, I wanted a better life for myself. Meditation and Buddhist teachings helped me personally, Jordan peterson, Joe rogan and jocko are my the father figures I never had. God bless.

November of 2018, I was gifted Discipline Equals Freedom. I opened the cover and it read “Chris-Stay on the path. Get Some, Jocko“. I was told by LTC Frazer, that he had informed you that the reason the 177th RTI from Michigan was at the Dallas Muster was because of me and that I was not there because I was retiring after losing my 23 year old son the year prior. He said you handed him your book and personally tabbed the chapter/page titled “Death”. It hit home and so did this clip. As you stated it happened. It still comes in waves, but the sets are far apart. Enough for me to Live. I’ve been repurposed and found my next call to arms. This fight most consider to be the invisible enemy. If not for my faith, his glory I would still be lost and broken. I’d also like to thank you for that gift 4 years ago. I keep your book next to my bible on my nightstand to remind me to “Get Some” every time I see it. If you are ever in Houston, have the time and interested in seeing what we are doing at Camp Hope, PTSD Foundation of America, I’d be more than humbled to show you how we are combating the invisible war. Thanks Brother for everything that you do! SGM (RET) Knight - Director of Camp Hope Operations.

The loss is so raw. The lack of control of your feelings is awful, but you just have to go with it and let it pass. So right its like a wave that hits you and the regret flows over you, but it will pass. You can bring them back in your memory, feel the love and live again in that moment.

My father passed away in 2018. One massive thing I’ve learned is, you’re never ever getting over it, you live with the pain. One day its fucking horrible, the other day you’re the happiest person you’ve been in years. The wave example is bang on perfect. The waves always come when its unexpected, and it sucks. Its very important to talk, cry, be angry, and just simply let your emotions out. The letter example is an absolutely awesome thing to do❤️

Lost my best friend almost a month ago now due to uncertain circumstances, as of yet. 27 years old, we went through a lot of life defining shit together, and I still cant really comprehend that hes gone, Jocko talking about the waves is absolutely right.
Miss you Glenn, I'll never forget.

I feel for this person who lost their child. I've lost a father and other loved ones but I can't imagine how horrible it would be to lose one of my children. I am touched at how jocko is able to delicately help this person move forward. It's apparent that jocko appreciates the magnitude of this person's question and is doing the best he can to guide him forward. I wish the best for their family and hope they find peace. It's moments like this that I wish there were a god. I wish I could believe that loved ones are not lost forever.
