  • Gemma Sisica had a dream that she would start a school for the poorest of the poor in Tanzania. It was a huge task, and one that some say was impossible. This clip from the 2005 Australian Story episode shows how that dream came alive.
Gemma was 22 when she visited Uganda volunteer as a teacher. It planted a seed in her and a passion to ensure that education is available for all children, anywhere in the world.
In 2002, St Jude's opened with one teacher and three students. Today, it has expanded to include more than 1,800 students across three campuses and employs more than 400 local Tanzanian staff.

I was warned by someone in 2009 not to go anywhere near Tanzania, but I still went in 2010. They were right. Tanzanians will take your heart, and it never will be the same again.
I've been going to Arusha every year since 2010. I know a couple of students and their families at this school. One of them lives in an area called Sakina and she used to help me out with translating when I went to visit families with some volunteers when I worked with a school in the area. She was only about 11 at the time and spoke fluent Swahili and English.
So much admiration for what School of St Jude does and I know for a fact that the school is very well respected in the region too.
I don't think I'll ever be able to not go to Tanzania every year for the rest of my life. And that suits me just fine :) Amani
