    Janick lives I'm a small town just a few miles north of me. I bumped in to him there at one of the pubs and he was so polite. Let me sit at his table and chat with him for about 15 minutes before he had to leave. I've always thought people have been harsh either the way they critique him. I can see why he may not be everyone's cup of tea, but when people say things like "maiden would be better off without him" or "he's a terrible guitar player", I just think how wrong they are. He is an amazing guitar player and an incredibly talented song writer and, to top it all off, he is just such a genuinely nice person. One of few celebrities I can think of who I could sit down with at a bar. Too many celebrities are so stuck up and think they're above the fans. Not him. He is happy to sit down and just chat with the fans. Even bought me a pint on his way out. Great guy. I'll never forget that day

    Janick is my favorite player since he’s so erratic and energetic! People call him sloppy but he is very skilled. Those who compare his skill to Young, I think he’s still a lot more skilled than Young. His work with White Spirit and Tattooed Millionaire show this!

  • @ErikEarlJohnson
    @ErikEarlJohnson Рік тому +1

    The way he just randomly bends a full step (or a little flat) to a target note and just let's it hang with no vibrato and waits for it to feedback is awesome. I was a big fan of 90's Maiden and Gers' playing. He brought a real rock and roll street fighter vibe to Iron Maiden. The Tattooed Millionaire album has some fantastic playing (DIVE DIVE DIVE solo). I know I'm in the minority, but I also thought the Real Live One, Real Dead One, Live at Donnington and Raising Hell DVD live stuff was great, as was the Blaze era albums. His solos are like taking a ride in one of those Temple of Doom rail cars with three wheels, and that's a good thing.

    Nico, Janick material I would love to see you bring here is Whitespirit (lots of great riffs and Janick's "Two Minutes to Midnight'), his contribution to Fish's album and material from Tattooed Millionaire. He played so well on those recordings, and regarding Tattooed, o feel it is a little more laid back at times, which complimented his natural "flare", achieving amazing results. No so many people know these recordings and this side of Janick's playing, so I believe it would be great content for the channel!

R in r versions good but even with Dave’s extra tapping and Janicks clean tone the studio versions are some of Maidens best solos. Well I think that a solo basically means improvising, and if you are able to improvise outside the key of a song but still sound great then you ve nailed it, these things actually make you a pro not ultra fast speed which is overly exaggerated these days.I can't comment on live performances because it's hard to play almost daily the same tracks over and over and be spotless or not experiment a little..... Great video!!

    I've always loved Janick! You've definitely nailed a solid description of his playing style. Though, as odd as it sounds, judging by that, I've always imagined if he was around 10-20 years younger, he'd probably be perfect for bands in the vein of Bathory, Dismember, or Morbid Angel.

      He's a cool dude, and a hell of a songwriter too! Glad you enjoyed this video, thank you!! 😊 I would never in a million years have even thought of associating Janick with Morbid Angel but if I think about an album like Blessed are the Sick.. it kinda fits! 🤯

      I've always been pretty chaotic and unorthodox in my own playing myself, to the dismay of most guitarists. So that kind of sums up my fondness of Janick

    Hey bro! New comment to this gem! I may have asked you this before, but for these sweet bends, what string gauge do you prefer? I switched to 10s many years ago - and I *think* my new Jackson’s & Kramers all come with 10s- but I’m thinking of going back to 9s. I was just wondering what strings do you use mostly?

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Рік тому +2

      Hey!
      So for Maiden stuff I tend to use their same gauges just to help me simulate their approach and attach a bit more.
      Janick is 10-46, Dave is 9-42 and Adrian's Jacksons I use 9-46.
      On Gibsons, and guitars I tune down a half step, I use 10-46.
      My two Ibanez Destroyers get 9-42.
      The Gretsch gets 11-50.
      My personal preference in general is 9-42 for Fender scale instruments and 10-46 for Gibson scale.
      Everyone's hands are different so if 10s feel stiff to you, you should definitely switch to 9s. Heavier strings don't make anywhere near enough of a difference to make up for any hindrance they may cause to your playing.

    • @jeffersononetwo
      @jeffersononetwo Рік тому +1

      @@LicksOfTheBeast Thanks bro! I think along the same lines ... I have the SDX Adrian Jackson as well. I think I will switch it to 9's in standard tuning and my other Kramer/Jacksons that are 1/2 step down, I'll keep at 10's. Thanks for that advise! 10s are not that had for me really but I might get a bit more control now with the 9s. I am no where near as good as you but I've been conditioned to playing rhythm for 30+ years. I should be way further along on solos but ... ughhh! Should have practice my scales more - I like the standard vs 1/2 step down idea ... that makes great sense \M/ Up The Irons!

    We should go by songs when listening to Maiden, NOT by the guitarist (Dennis, Adrian or Janick).

    This one reminded of this video by this Brazilian guitar specialist that talks about the three (actually, four) guitar styles of Iron Maiden with a special mention to Janick Gers: ua-cam.com/video/j6sRiD0Y82k/v-deo.html
    In the end, he is not really necessary to the band, but his live presence* makes Maiden even bigger and some of his contributions are timeless.
    *and I'm not talking about the dancing and guitar throwing.

      And yet sometimes that person you wouldn't immediately recognize as indispensable is actually the linchpin. :)

      @@LicksOfTheBeast but Wasting love and Blood Brothers solos without random shredding sound very beautiful and melodiously 🎸

      Steve Harris might disagree with you on that 😁 I really do love Maiden with Janick as well but I can't deny there was a special magic going on between '81 and '88.
