    Cal Newport talks about overcoming laziness in Episode 276 of the Deep Questions podcast.
    One of the most common types of messages sent in from listeners of this podcast are self-recriminations about laziness. But what does “laziness” actually mean? In this episode, Cal takes a deeper look at the common terms and sees that it’s often used to describe two unrelated phenomena. He then gives a big idea for overcoming each.

    "No this is not an MRI scan, I'm drawing this myself..." lolol 😂😂 I found Cal a while back but only started watching/listening to his podcasts since I listened to him on Huberman a couple weeks ago and besides all the great guidance, I laugh out loud - love the podcast, just picked up your book (Digital Minimalism) - thanks!

    Yes to all of what Freya said. My kids are 21 and 18. The best decision I have ever made in my life is keeping them off social media until they graduated high school. The focus on 'mental health' has led a generation down the path of a hyperfocus on things that are normal tensions of growing up, turning them into mental health issues. This is different than true mental health issues. The internet for kids is the blind leading the blind, it is toxic in so many ways. This entire video is fantastic. My kids had phones because we wanted them to be able to get a hold of us and had activities where the adults weren't walking them to and from our cars, but we disabled internet access or the ability to install apps. Just monitor their texts too, if they are logged in to the cloud you can view them, no phones upstairs, they stay in public areas of the house only and get hooked up when they walk in the door. I see so many parents afraid to set limits, you have to be willing to be the bad guy and the 'only parent' who sets limits. We are their parents not their friends.

    I'm planning for next year so will see I this helps. Biggest challenge is to remember that I've made a plan in the first place as someone with inattentive adhd. Checking the daily plan will have to be the first habit.

    Your podcast is top quality Cal! I'm a 50 year old corporate event manager (definitely not knowledge work - hyper stressful though) and your teachings on productivity have really helped me "get a grip" and feel more in control of an unpredictable and haphazard schedule (nature of the job). I can't wait for your slow productivity book. Keep up the good work!

    All people are lazy and do not do effortful work. The people who appear to be doing ‘hard work’ are responding to incentives.
    Often people who become great are trying to escape the discomfort of not meeting their calling or peer pressure. I manipulate my life and incentives by creating binding ‘commitment contracts’.

    Algorithmic article review it spot-on with regard to the ultimate risks of social media on the young, ...high risk of ending up down a dark rabbit hole for sure. I need copies of this article for my children and their friends as they raise their Gen A families. Also, another great podcast - a great review of the Deep Life System.

      Little known fact: the English word “calendar” dates back centuries ago to the Latin word, “calendarium”.
      This is where it gets interesting: the Latin word “calendarium” was in fact named after Cal Newport.

    HEY CAL! 👋I love this podcast and LOVE your book Digital Minimalism. ❤ I finished it in a few days I was so intrigued. It's changed my life and gave me that push to get a Light Phone II. QUESTION: Are those 5 STEPS in this video you talked about found in your book DEEP WORK? I'm currently listening to DEEP WORK and want more details on the 5 STEPS you went over in this video. Thanks for all you do. 👏 BLESSINGS... 🙏

    I can really relate to this stuff. But where I struggle now is being FTM to 7, 3 are 3 and under, and I homeschool. My husband works long hours to support our family. I feel like nothing in my life can be totally consistent or structured. It makes me feel constantly overwhelmed and overestimated. I am working toward a better set of habits/foundations, but it is hard to identify and fix things that feel totally out of my control (teething baby, sick child, unplanned extra shift from my husband, etc.). What do y'all do to simplify and make life a little more predictable when there are so many demands to meet that make it tough to meet your own? I genuinely believe there are women out there who can offer some great advice or I wouldn't ask (and a lot of us that need it!)

      Rearing children is very contradictory: long days v short years; the benefits of providing stability v their inevitable growth and the consequent need to change approach ,sometimes quite rapidly ; it's both chronic and acute at the same time!
      Be kind to yourself.

    Can I ask why we think they stopped labeling this videos with the titles of the podcast they represent? Why not at least number them in the title? I'm guessing that this is SEO choice, so I get it -- if that's true. But if not, then I don't get why Jesse or whomever stopped the titling convention that was used until (I think) Episode 259.
    I think this is an unfortunate change.

      You are a perfect example of fixed mindset

    • @laurensgoossens2062
      @laurensgoossens2062 3 місяці тому

      I've noticed that hiding behind a label does not work. Adhd does not have to stop you from being a highly functional person in society. From all the psychologist, pill givers and doctors i've noticed that being structured and having a reliable planning system (no quick fix, it will take years to perfect) is the way to go. Only after that should medication be considered. Make sure you are not in a fragmented state too often, train your ability to focus (think of it as a muscle). Social media and distraction fuels adhd and amplifies symptoms by a whole lot. Listening to music 5+ hours a day and task switching constantly may feel good in the moment, but once you break the cycle you are freed from the loop. One of the most important things Cal talks about is fixing the relationship with your brain. Regain trust in eachother. If you keep improving, the trust in your brain and abilities will come back. It is not a lost cause

    • @tonibryant6696
      @tonibryant6696 2 місяці тому

      @laurensgoossens2062 y'all are reading way too much into my comment, lol. I'm just saying different things work better for ADHDers. Our brains literally function differently from neurological brains. There are plenty of ways for us to be successful, productive, and happy. Those are often not the same ways as those which work for NT people, and that's fine. Just because this isn't for me and people like me doesn't mean it can't hold value for others.
