One of the best things I did was setting up my kids Google account including calendars when they were in middle school, which reserved their name for email and set up the calendar, I added all their classes and events to it. They didn't use it until they were in later high school but they quickly got used to checking it, knowing classes with room numbers and teacher names, ballet classes, scout meetings, work, whatever, it's all there. They are in college now and fluent in using it, it has really made their life easier. It also made mine and my husband's easier because each calendar has it's own color and we can see what's going on for anyone at any time, college breaks, family events, etc. We still have the ability to view their calendars, and we have a 'family' calendar that has things like holiday events, family vacations, and our bills have their own calendar. It helps with scheduling of family events since we can quickly see if they have a conflict, eliminating the go back and forth. We can view or hide any calendar at any time.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 Transforming *your life starts with discipline, not just self-discovery or passion.*
02:34 Begin *the journey to a deeper life by organizing your nonprofessional life first.*
03:28 Organization *reduces background stress, creating a fertile ground for ambition and clarity.*
04:34 Gain *mental peace and free time for reflection by taking control of your obligations.*
05:57 Organizing *your life provides insight into how you spend your time and supports future disciplined pursuits.*
07:20 Life *outside of work is easier to organize than the complexities of knowledge work.*
08:17 Implement *a simple system for life organization: calendar, file storage, and a mail sorter.*
09:38 Use *physical filing for important papers, and digital storage for corresponding digital artifacts.*
11:13 Make *your digital calendar the engine of your personal life organization, including one-time tasks and regular activities.*
16:10 Introduce *a physical mail sorter to handle incoming personal life obligations efficiently.*
    - 19:39: Organize your personal life using a calendar system. Schedule regular tasks like going through mail to stay on top of things and avoid chaos.
    - 20:48: Automate important tasks by setting up recurring schedules on your calendar. Include household chores, car maintenance, exercise, and time with friends. This helps streamline your life and ensures important activities are consistently prioritized.
    - 23:36: Reduce what's not important by gaining a clear understanding of where your time goes. Living by your calendar allows you to identify time-consuming activities and make informed decisions about what to keep or eliminate.
    - 25:13: After a month of following this system, you'll have a different perspective on your life. You'll feel more in control, able to make intentional choices, and better equipped to craft a deeper, more meaningful life.
    - 26:10: The process of organizing your life according to this system provides exposure to discipline and cultivates a more disciplined self-identity. It also equips you with concrete tools to manage your time effectively.
    - 34:39: During major life changes, redefine "deep" as being intentional rather than sticking to a specific set of activities. Clarify your intentions, align them with your values, and structure your life accordingly during transitional periods.
    - 37:26: If overwhelmed with balancing work and personal obligations, focus on psychological aspects. Maintain a tiptop organizational system for work to reduce stress and ensure nothing is held in your head. Lean into a shutdown ritual to train your mind to let go of work-related stress after hours.
39:17 Creating *clear separation between work and personal time provides psychological benefits, reducing the risk of burnout.*
41:08 Rituals *are self-reflective activities to change mindset or remind of values, while routines structure and impact how time is spent, influencing real outcomes.*
49:24 Video *games are not inherently problematic, but they become an issue when they substitute real-world accomplishments and hinder personal development.*
55:44 Balancing *strategic plans with the deep life involves integrating personal and professional goals, aligning organizational systems with the vision for a deeper life.*
59:53 Focus *on both macro and micro scales in your efforts. The speaker mentions three main areas: a website for runners, a UI design course, and creating online content. Struggling with day theming, the person seeks advice on how to make progress in multiple important areas.*
01:01:15 On *the micro scale, establish foundational depth commitments, daily or weekly habits that align with your values. On the macro scale, embrace the concept of "slow multitasking," dedicating weeks or months to specific projects before switching, allowing deep focus and sustainable progress.*
01:05:43 A *listener's case study exemplifies slow productivity, emphasizing consistency, deep work, and meaningful progress over time. The idea is to prioritize important tasks, focus on a deep life, and avoid quick fixes or hacks.*
01:11:56 Discussion *shifts to an article about reading habits. Reading is described as a superpower, offering mind-reading abilities by absorbing an expert's thoughts and enhancing empathy through fiction. Regular reading leads to sharper thinking. The speaker encourages starting with books of personal interest and incorporating reading habits into daily routines to gain cognitive benefits.*

I wrote myself a self-help book called "The Last Self-Help Book You'll Ever Need". it's a comedy self-help book but it raises an interesting point in that all you have to do is "DO IT".
I wrote it for myself to get to work when I feel lazy but more importantly, make fun of my lazy ass that comes up with bullshit excuses.
The self-help industry is predatory in nature, they don't want you to succeed because they will lose money. They teach you more mental gymnastics more than anything. While I love Cal Newport's take on simple, slow productivity, his book Deep Work is pivotal in my opinion,.... it still sometimes overcomplicates "just do it". Keep things very simple and do things one at a time.

Thank God you finally narrowed down on "discipline". Like you did with "laziness", and showing how they are not moral failings, but abstract concepts that can be concretized.

Any advice on how to share and teach these ideas to other people in our lives? Of course we can't control others, but if we can help them live more organized lives, our interactions with them will be more effective. Similarly, if they are not organized, this might affect our effectiveness

In a recent episode Cal answered a question like this from someone trying to help their spouse. His answer was basically you can’t. I think leading by example makes people pay attention to what you’re doing when they see you being more productive/organized.
That said, on long car rides I put the podcast on which forces my husband to hear it too. I pretend I want to listen to the latest episode when I’ve actually listened a couple times already. 😂 . My husband says he doesn’t find enjoyment in it like I do but I’ve absolutely noticed him making small productivity changes lately.

I just want to chime in that it depends on what game to be honest. In terms of friction I mean. For example, with Hollow Knight, it's such a stressful game that requires a lot of patience and eye-hand coordination skills to get through certain levels. I remember I only managed to get through a level because I meditated 🤣🤣🤣 so in some ways I imagine games like that, despite it being designed to help you succeed eventually, it will take you practice to get there. I'd like to think it's a type of sport for those that take it seriously. It's mainly mental than it is physical though.

Additionally, for e-sports games like Call of Duty, Apex...it also takes a lot of skill to the point that they have coaches and recently desks, chairs are being designed now to avoid back, wrist, arm and wrist injury so pros can keep gaming in tournaments. I hope that gives a bit more context. I guess the main thing young men and women should consider is if they want to play some games competitively and beat records/join tournaments or it's just a hobby for stress relief and not a form of escape.

You are using the outliers and exceptions to the rule to prove that something is true in general. While it is true professional indy racers have worked to obtain such excellent skills at driving that they have highly developed their discipline, persistence, and mental toughness, this does not reflect the everyday person driving an SUV or a minivan. Is it possible to play games in such a way that discipline and a wide range of mental abilities are developed in the process? Yes. Is it the case that even 10% of the people playing such games do so? No. Furthermore, if the only thing a person does is play video games, then they are not better off than the person who only plays chess or only plays poker. In fact, much more likely worse off. Video games do not tend to be an activity that permits those who engage in it to be their most productive selves or to accomplish the most of what they are capable.
Here is another way to look at this. How many of the most capable esports competitors would have also made great scientists, doctors, musicians, artists, or business leaders? There is a price to be paid in the opportunity cost of investing all of one's time in esports rather than the alternatives. Something to think about. The amount of time someone spends playing video games should be scheduled and intentional in accordance with the goals they want to achieve. What kind of impact does a person want to make upon the world and how do video games as a profession allow them to do that? How reasonable is it that one will achieve the skill level of an esports professional?

I agree totally. But half of the population don'e even read anything, they are more into writing on social media or watching videos and that kills the ability to do own thinking. So, what Cal suggested is to start with reading books on the topic that you like. Then reading would eventually be a habit.

Not all games are dopamine generators. There are games that have rough edges, that in which progress is not guaranteed. Those games teach you a lot along the way. A game is an interactive simulation, an experience engine. The important part is the experience it generates along with the player, not the fidelity. Dark Souls is a great example, a life-changing game in many ways. Another game, Disco Elysium can be the closest a game has ever been to a novel.

So defeating a boss in Dark Souls doesn’t give you dopamine? Remember dopamine peaks with the anticipation of an uncertain reward. I love gaming even though I no longer game. The major issue I have with gaming is that nothing from gaming transfers to life. Also when not gaming the mind to use up resources problem solving challenges in the game. I could justify gaming to myself if it was a social thing done occasionally between friends.

A physical mail sorter? It's been almost a quarter century since I've had a physical filing cabinet, and it's been a decade since I've used paper mail (what little paper mail is sent to me goes to a service that scans it and emails it to me). Seems like a huge waste of time to continue dealing with paper when trying to get organized. Why not go modern?
Index cards? Really? I can't think of any scenario where paper index cards would make anything quicker or more productive.
Also, saying that to-do apps add difficulty doesn't make sense. Unless someone is so super-old-school that apps are difficult for them, I think to-do apps make things easier and quicker, not more difficult.

Some people are more tactile and need a physical object to help the mental process. It’s not a deficit, just a different way of getting you to the goal of completion.
If you can live and process entirely in your head (via tech), good for you! But if a physical system is required to help someone else achieve success, then good for them.
The end achievement welcomes whatever system it takes to get there.
