- HMS Belfast has reopened to the public for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began.
In that time, new features have been introduced, including an exhibition space, crew member stories, and a quayside bar.
One of Belfast's curators, Nigel Steel showed us around.

I'm proud to be able to say that my late uncle "Alan Young" was a stocker onboard HMS Belfast, I sadly only found this out at his funeral.

Brilliant ship. I was on the Belfast a few years ago and got a look at what my Grandfather went through during six years of War, on HMS Kent.
My office at No 1 London Bridge back in 1998 gave me a decent view of the ship. Often ate lunch along the Thames River on the rare nice days alongside her. Beautiful ship. Nice memories of my time in London.
Glad to see her getting a revamp, I’ll come down and have a look soon. Last time I was there I remember the dentist, don’t know why it stuck with me but I remember that
Stuck with me too and I was only on once! A lot of the models have been taken away and replaced by these boards for interpretation.
Lovely to hear HMS Belfast's great service history giving honour to the name of our great city Belfast which has been through so much adversity.
Considering that she almost sank a few months after being built by Harland and Wolff (no small thanks to a German magnetic mine) I think she was blessed by the luck of the Irish.
I went as a school trip in 2008. Will never forget.
Remember her well, when she was based at HMS Bellerophon Portsmouth in 1967. As a young Royal Marine recruit doing my seamanship training. We lived on HMS Volage, a V class Destroyer tied up alongside the Belfast, but used the Belfast for mess facilities.
I have seen the Belfast moored in the Thames, several times from a distance. One day I shall make the trip and do the tour.

My father served on HMS BELFAST, I also served from 1968 and have mentioned to people about Bellerophon (accommodation ship) but looked at me in somewhat disbelief. Nice to know there are still some matelot’s Jack tar’s ,out there ! Or I see you an ex boot neck !
If you go to London the HMS Belfast is a must. Not immediately known as a 'have to do' though you will be so happy that you did.

Edinburgh is my favorite ship on WoWs. It would be amazing to visit the Belfast in person some day. Amazing ships.
I was CERA engine rooms in late 1950’s to early 1960’s and brought her home from her last foreign commission. Lovely old ship. Did her last full power trial en route from Japan...the longest trial I’ve ever done...we were looking for calmer waters for the surgeon to operate but a typhoon was approaching so we ran at full power to Hong Kong to offload the patient. She was faultless the whole trip...settled down beautifully....much too good to scrap. Like her I’m old but still surviving

Been meaning to go see this ship for ages.
It's wonderful to go around, I've been to it a few times now.
Not really a whole trip thing, but if you plan on going to IWM or another museum it makes a good end to the day.
I remember visiting the ship on a school trip a long time ago along with the Imperial War Museum. Loved that day and must go back for another visit.
I remember flying to London alone around 2003 and walking around and actually going to the Belfast. Was pretty cool just walking around checking it all out. I had been on American Battleships and Carriers so it was nice to see something from a different country.
It's a shame that out of all the ships built, only a tiny amount is preserved until today.

Preserving ships costs money, a lot of money, there’s about 70 preserved museum ships in the UK. That’s not a small amount.
Went once when I was 12. Can't wait to visit again

I joined the R.N. 1953 and later served on H.M.S. Glasgow, we were sent to Suez, but the war was rightly aborted when we reached Gibraltar. The Glasgow was part of a batch of eight. I have had a look around the Belfast was able to bring back memories I slung my hammock in the capstan flat happy days….
The wheel house was positioned bottom and centrally to avoid battle damage .

A Russian shipyard refurbished her mast in 2014 in gratitude for the northern convoys.

Two stories: HMS Belfast in the Korean War, my dad 41 Independent Cdo. taken off Yo-do island in Wonsan Harbour by landing craft to Belfast for shower, change of kit and a meal, on board for all of twenty minutes. D-day, X turret fired ‘as a signal to start the naval bombardment’ - er, no! During the night CPO Bob McTaggart had split a bottle of rum with his oppo and in gunnery control, all turrets lit, looking down the hatch could see the signaller poised to send the code letter to begin G for George, dah-dah-dit. “When you key a dot you keep your wrist straight, but when you key a dash you drop your wrist. As soon as the signaller dropped his wrist I fired the turret.” God, I hope Bobby Jr. did what I asked and filed his stories!

Pretty silly the helmsman's not located in the bridge. No doubt some expert will chime in as to why at some point.
They needed to be kept safe from gunfire and bombs. You could pass instructions from anywhere on the ship if needed but the helmsman needed to be safe. They could steer from a backup position at the tiller flat but it was much harder.
You know in reality they'll end up using the ship as a migrant taxi service soon 😅 Our government is pony. Lovely piece of history though. Visited a few times
