    Now a museum ship, the Town-class HMS Belfast has a long, proud service history. In World War II she assisted in the destruction of German battleship Scharnhorst and supported the Normandy landings. However, the Royal Navy ships faced another enemy - mines. Belfast fell prey to the most dangerous of them. It's a miracle that she remained afloat, and it's a miracle that she could return to her base for repairs.

    • @virusguy5611
      @virusguy5611 7 років тому +80

      Issue was the Warspite was terribly damaged and practically falling apart. By the end of the war, one of her turrets was permanently out of commission (due to a guided bomb/missile strike). Her barrels had fired so many shells the rifling had wore out. She'd been hit by a naval mine so her propeller shafts were cracked.
      There's also the matter that Warspite sailed from 1916 to 1945... which meant nearly 30 years of seawater damage. You could refit it, but with a ship that damaged, with the British so bankrupt thank you ww2, they couldn't really turn Warspite into a museum ship.

    • @ancilodon
      @ancilodon 7 років тому +40

      There was a lot of support for Warspite though. She drew some pretty large crowds with a good measure of emotion when she broke her tow lines near Penzance. Many said that was her fighting going to the breakers' yard.

      virusguy5611 She was heavily rebuilt in the 30’s with new superstructure, armour and enhanced range turrets. If the will had been there she could have been saved. But frankly, there was a lot of very negative thinking after the war and a lot of jobsworths. Warspite survived her grounding in Mounts bay, so she wasn’t that delicate. Remember, Belfast broke her back due to mining and is held together by external bracing.

      Cailus Griffin We failed to preserve USS Enterprise, though. :(
      I know it would be ridiculous to try to preserve every ship, or even to preserve every famous or iconic one. There's just too many ships for that. But Warspite and Enterprise were the two ships most worthy of preservation since HMS Victory, and both ended up becoming razor blades. Quite sad.

    • @RedXlV
      @RedXlV 7 років тому +7

      If it had been up to me, I would've had Enterprise preserved in Annapolis next to the US Naval Academy. Alongside Forrest Sherman Field seems like a nice location with sufficient shoreline.
      I was also hoping that the most recent Enterprise would be preserved, but apparently so much space was taken up by nuclear reactors (which of course have to be removed for safety reasons) that the ship had to be literally gutted.

    • @gottjager760
      @gottjager760 5 років тому +1

      @@RedXlV I know it is something of a joke to say they were made into razor blades but it is an incredible waste of finite resources to make razor blades from them. The Steel in the ships cannot be made anymore, there is not economical way of doing it. The reason is simple, the radioactive background in the air post Trinity is to high for steel made in it to be used in radioactive detection equipment, as such he steel is very valuable. Armour sections from Vanguard were used in the whole body monitor at the Radiobiological Research Laboratory (now DSTL). Still a waste but at least not all of it was made into razor blades, a lot was tho.

This is because the Band Service served as Fire Control parties and were based in the bowels of the ship well below the waterline. If the ship went down the bandsmen had no hope of escape

    Great video!!! Got to see this ship twice in the 1980s when I was in the US Army and stationed in Germany. Took vacation to visit friends in Kent, but detoured to London for a week each visit. First time in London, saw HMS Belfast, but did not have any interest nor new anything about her. Second visit, wanted to visit ship but she was closed down for renovations/repairs - missed opportunity on my part. At least I have some awesome photos of her!!

    Had the honour of visiting her 2 years ago and simply put. Images and videos don't do her justice. One must visit her to fully appreciate her grandeur. Amazing ship with an incredible history. Absolute miracle that mine didn't take her to her grave, but like all British ships, she was a fighter!

    im almost certain shes the last ww2 era ship the uk built thats still around now. that still amazes me i mean they scrapped every other ship that survived even the warspite. ive been on this ship and it was awesome but i cant help but look at the americans and the amount of ww2 ships they still have remaining. i mean it wouldve been cool to see a battleship of that era for myself and its kinda sad that i cant. at least they saved something from being scrapped :)

    • @riyoriyote
      @riyoriyote 7 років тому +1

      Nope - HMS Cavalier is a UK WW2 era WEP destroyer at Chatham Historic Dockyard and there is a midget X-class sub still existing. There's also some surviving UK built WW2 ships that served with the Commonwealth navies, eg. HMCS Haida in Canada.
      If you include WW1 built vessels there is also HMS Caroline in Belfast (C-class cruiser) and M33 at Portsmouth.

    • @TheSorub

      unlike America t the end of world war 2 , the uk was broke, it had almost a million damaged houses to repair or rebuild. I am afraid looking after aged warships was not a priorty. The creation of the welfare state , the national health service was the main focus

    Belfast off the Normandy beaches comes under fire from a German shore battery. She slips her anchors and pisses off leaving the Landing Craft Flak which was giving her AA cover to the mercy of the shore battery. No warning given of her leaving. My father was on the LCF and was severely wounded . He had a friend serving on Belfast who was horrified at the event.

    sailed up the Thames and docked alongside the HMS Belfast. What a way for a 22 year-old to see London. (I don't remember which LST I was on. If you know which one this was, please let me know.)

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 7 років тому

      I saw one in game too, I don't recall if it had torps or not but it definitely had the smoke. The other players and I thought that this was odd since the last we had heard the British cruiser line wasn't going to get smoke.
      As for torps, I kind of hope they get them since every other cruiser line, save for most of the USN, get them. With their small guns they'll need something to give them a little extra punch, unless their thing is going to be just high DPM and possibly high fire chance from HE.

      Apparently Belfast in-game represents her 1956 configuration. That's also why she has 40mm Bofors guns instead of the 40mm Vickers Pom-Pom mounts, and why she gets to be one of the few Tier 7 ships with radar.
