Few people seem to know (because it's buried in the manual) that once you lock the EC dial, you can "unlock" it on the fly by holding down the "menu/ok" button for a few seconds (that unlocks anything you have locked in the menu, as you show in this video). You will get confirmation on the screen that it is unlocked. This is really useful if you DO occasionally use the EC dial and thus don't want to dive into the menus to re-enable it. You can re-lock it by again holding the "menu/ok" button until you get the confirmation that it is locked again.
Pro tip: engage/disengage the ND filter by pulling and holding the evf/ovf lever to the right for about 3 seconds. Also, so long as you don't have the AF lever lock turned on, you can set the AF Mode to "All", then if you push the AF lever down it will let you scroll through all the various modes without having to go into menus or assigning it to the Q button.
I actually have the button on the EVF/OVF lever mapped to the ND filter so I can quickly toggle it on or off. Sometimes those few seconds can really make the difference.
I had no idea! Cool tip. I have mine for mapped to the button in the center of the lever. That's been working well for me ever since Fuij added that button... whichever model that was...
Some good tips here most of which make good sense, thanks. One huge faux pas however. Why advise photographers (particularly newbies) to lock of the most useful physical dial on any camera - the exposure compensation dial. Do you never do your street photography at night for example? That dial is indispensable in neon and street lamp lit scenes. Another prime example would be interiors where there are bright windows lighting the background (e.g. a cathedral stained glass window) indeed any scene where highlights are obviously blowing. Without that comp dial you will have to spot meter for the window (or sky or sign or reflection or whatever). This task is so much easier, quicker more controlled with the exposure dial, where you can shoot in small increments and get the balance between subject and lighting source right whilst concentrating on the other key element composition. The exposure comp dial is a key tool for a pro photographer it gives you controller the light - all newbies should jump right in and learn how to use it - it isn't hard with the decent evf's on these cameras, it's wysiwyg intuitive.
Been following you for about two years. All of your advice has made my X100V more user friendly (for me). Thank you so much for sharing your discoveries with others. We truly appreciate it!
Good tips. Two things though. I have never had any problems with the focus point moving when the lever is set to "Push to unlock". No need to remove that feature completely, if you ask me. And also, setting the focus point to the smallest, is maybe more precise to point with, but you will also miss more shots, since the area where it tries to focus, has less contrast to use for focusing.
Interesting, I've tried both ways, but I found that since I never move my focus point there was no reason for me to have it even be a possibility to push in and move the focus frame
Great video, but I love the exposure compensation dial. But that's also part of why I keep the bar running along the left side of my display to show me where it's set for. In sunny weather, I will often times set it to -0.3 stops. It makes post-processing much easier and making sure my highlights aren't too bright. But that's what is great about the X100V, is super customizable and a great piece of kit for most photographers.
Imagine turning off the exposure meter completely and then being surprised when your pictures turn out horribly because you have no idea what your settings are actually doing. Simplifying the screen to these levels seems counterproductive.
I’m glad this video popped up on my screen again. I watched it a couple of months ago, which was about the same time I got my X100V and was still finding my way around. Now it makes much more sense.
My most used button on street might be the compensation dial. I really do use it to adjust my intention depending the light that I have at that moment.
Same here ... I have even configured my rear command dial to it. It makes it easy to adjust the exposure quickly without having to move my hand to the dial on top of the camera.
GREAT VIDEO! I really learn a lot! Talking about the focus lever setting, just in my personal opinion, I found out that Push to Unlock seems to be much better. It allows you to adjust the size of your focus frame in the shooting screen on the fly, you don’t need to go back to the menu.
First of all, compliments to you purely for giving me some good zen vibes watching this video. Especially with the music. This personally motivated me to watch the full video without any blockages here and there. Second of all, thanks for your tips!! Bless.
Idk if you know this.. but if you pull and hold the EVF switch to the right it’ll eventually toggle the ND filter, removing the need for a Q menu setting for it ;)
Yo! Great video as always. Another, super quick way to change the size of the focus frame is to click the focus lever (per your other tip) and then you’re in the same spot - so you can change the size of the focus frame with the wheel just like you demonstrated. It’s quicker than going thru the menus. I use it all the time, great feature! Cheers!
Is it key to keep your focus dot in the middle of the screen? I adjusted it like you did in the video but my touch screen is still on. When I accidentally touch somewhere the focus dot goes there and it wouldn’t let me put it in the middle anymore when I use the little joystick.
Simplifying this is nthe screen menu alone changes the whole experience of this camera. I was wondering why things still didn’t feel right when I got this camera m. Def. cause all the things I had on the menu. Preciate you sharing this man
Thanks for this. I cleaned of the OVF with your advice because all those data points were getting in the way. Much nicer and pure way to shoot without distractions.
I'm sorry if my comment isn't worded well. I use an x100f. My setting are Aperture priority, 3 iso presets (my most used is one that maxs out at 800iso) I use autofocus (the mutliple square one) but 90% of the time, I manually focus after the autofocus, you get to manually micro adjust it with focus peeking. I've never used the viewfinder, it takes too long, so I would half press the shutter to get the focus and exposure then manually micro adjust the focus with the ring and shoot. Spot metering also works perfect with this, just point at the brightest parts, half press, reframe, focus with the ring and shoot.
I had the original X100 for many years and absolutely hated the EC button. Coming from a Leica background, I almost always shoot in manual mode, rendering EC meaningless. However, I would often unintentionally move the dial. Being able to lock EC is certainly a useful feature. Good to know in case I ever want to buy an X100V or another Fuji again.
This is probably the fourth time I’ve watched this video over the last few months, picking up something new and helpful each time. I guess two more views and I’ll have appreciated and absorbed all six tips, LOL!
You’d put the exposure compensation on the screen to make sure you don’t shoot at the wrong setting. It’s very unintrusive (sits vertically on the left) and doesnt’ get on the way. For me, I always have it set up to C and I can easily adjust the exposure with the front dial while shooting on aperture mode. Also, if you like the simple frame lines and focus square in the OVF, know that you can toggle between that and a an OVF with more data by using the DISP/BACk button too. The same works on the screen/EVF. You can have say: third lines, histogram, etc… but easily hide it all pressing BACK.
Fantastic advice, thank you! I’m new to the X100V and have been intentionally using it ‘as is’ while I feel my way around it. Over the last couple of days I’ve been thinking it’s time to RTFM and start customising things. Your suggestions make a lot of sense. I’m doing street in SE Asia but still working up the nerve to get closer than I needed to with my previous camera (it had a zoom lens). Slowly getting there…
Hi Faizal First of all, I love your videos! They are refreshingly calming me and bringing me off the quest for more, sharper, newer gear... Coming from Canon as my main camera, I just bought a used but like-new X-100V and use your videos to accelerate my learning curve. I really like the leather (?) camera strap you are using - what is it? THX and keep on posting, Daniel
The "Quick Menu" is really very helpful. E.g. I programmed there Eye Auto Focus on/off -- when I forgot there is another button on the top of my XT-2 and I also forgot there is the "My Menu", where I can also find Eye Autofocus on/off.
Can easily change the focus area by pressing the rear command dial then scrolling left or right. Can easily centre the focus area by double clicking the rear command dial before each shot.
Ah! Thanks a lot for the Focus frame lock tip. This was one of my most annoying problems. I list a lot of family photos, because the focus box moved to the lover left corner of the frame. In fact the always hustleing with the focus made me almost not using the camera anymore. Additionally I had to set the touchscreen to untouchable because, I still could accidentally change the focus point with the „all“ setting. Maybe you have saved my relationship with the Fuji. 😊😅
Hello, great video...I have a question...once camera is on and looking at the LCD. After say 10 seconds it starts to get like slow motion or jerky. How do I turn that off and stop it from doing the slow motion thing?
@@RemmyMusic1 The lines on the EVF are harder to see the borders, where the OVF I can see the borders quite clearly. For someone who wears glasses they will understand this.
Is there a way to assign a different function to the exposure compensation dial? I never use it myself either but it would be great if you could assign filmsims to it or something.
I have focus point as push to unlock and focus mode set to all. If I want to change my focus type all one needs to do is push focus level and the scroll using the back wheel.
I have a Fujifilm XT4, a Fujifilm 23 mm f1.4 (35mm equivalent), and a variable ND filter. Should I in theory be able to take the exact same kind of photos as the x100v, or is there something else that makes the x100v’s images unique? I’m talking strictly in terms of image quality. I ask because I don’t want to drop another $2k+ if I don’t have to!
Some of these are applicable to my XE4 as well, but if you've updated your XE4 settings too, do share with us! Can't wait to see your next video already.
This was great! Thanks man. Just used these to help setting up my x100v. Just got it today base on your experiences and recommendations. What film simulations do you use?
Great tips! I personally love the exposure compensation dial. My only gripe is the feel of it. Maybe I just need more time to adjust but I really miss the dial on my x100s.
Hot tip, instead of putting black bars on the top and bottom of your video, just change your aspect ratio in your editing program so it exports as the aspect ratio you want. That way when people watch your video fullscreen, we won't have your video completely surrounded by black bars on the top, bottom, AND sides.

I was wondering if you any suggestions on where to start, what camera could be interesting as a first camera, and then how to use it and take better photos? Thank you and I love the channel!
if I lock the Exp Comp dial, is there is a quick way to unlock it if required? Don't like the idea that, if I need it at a pinch, I need to navigate multiple menu options to re-enable it.
Hey Faisal! Thanks for the video. If you turn off your focus lever does that mean you first focus and then recompose your shot? You don’t lose a bit of focus by doing that in some cases?
The exposure compensation dial is a mystery to me. I shoot in full manual only. So it’s not useful at all to me. Wish there was a way to program it for something useful 😁
I have the feeling if you would put more information in your display you would have less problems with all your stuff getting accidentally changed and you don't noticing it.
always a pleasure to watch your videos and your different tips. If you should choose only one, XE4 or X100V? I would really like to buy the X100V but I'm afraid of being limited but on the one hand the Xe4 seems to be great too but it seems that it is less serious,... There's nothing about the XE4 that is "less serious" not sure what you mean by that. I would say, if you want to use different lenses, the XE4 is the way to go!
@@FaizalWestcott thank you for taking the time to respond. When I say "less serious", I mean that it is not polarized and that it seems easier to use. it's my feeling, nothing wrong.

Hi Faizal, thanks for the interesting settings. So if you lock the Focus Lever - the Focus is set in the middle always ? I mean the middle focus isnt´t also always right, or do I misunderstand you?

Beautiful video. Super well done
Great video - thanks. Where did you get your strap?
Thanks Faizal. Very useful.
The price of this camera is going up crazy from $1399 now $1900 on amazon😭😭😭
Ive been looking for a new X100F somewhere near list price for two years now. I saw a new one pop up on Amazon yesterday for $1399 and wanted to buy it. Before I could do so it was gone and they asked me if I wanted to buy a reconditioned one for $2399 instead! 😭
X100v 1399 new at B&H . Got it 3 weeks after I ordered it.
Don’t get crazy for it. It’s just a camera. People are pretty silly paying this kind of money for 2 years old item. Must be this Leica look.
@@10secondsrule 3 year old now!
whew boy. don't look now.
This is tremendously helpful. Thank you
Faizal, you want let us know how you aligned the hood (Hoage) i and some people are having difficulty aligning this the hood,
such grreat tips thank u! can you tell me where you set your flash activation as you don't have it in your quick menu? trying to think of a good button for it :)
That ‘camera got in my way’ is literally every small log or bricks blocking path in video game. 🤣🤣🤣
Do you use the fill flash and is there a quick way of activating it?
Hello! I just discovered your channel and I have been just watching a bunch of your videos and kinda decided to comment on the most recent one in hopes of a reply (probably wont happen). I am trying to start something creative and was thinking maybe photography could be something cool. It would help me go to places because there would be a reason for it, take photos. But i am a completely beginner and don'r really know where to start. The problem is actually there are away too much stuff going around and sometimes is not good. I was wondering if you any suggestions on where to start, what camera could be interesting as a first camera, and then how to use it and take better photos? Thank you and I love the channel!
Awesome. Thanks for the tips 🙏
Why do people use that 'shield' on the lens?
Nice and calm video!
I like your plants, make a video talking about your setup and where you work
if I lock the Exp Comp dial, is there is a quick way to unlock it if required? Don't like the idea that, if I need it at a pinch, I need to navigate multiple menu options to re-enable it.
Thank you! Great tips.
Interresting video, the fact that your voice is a bit like tobey maguire's is helping those technical aspects ;)
Did you do a voiceover for this?! The audio is crazy good
What squarehood do hoy use specifically??? Thanks for sharing 😃
Helps a lot. Thanks !
Really really useful, thanks!
New to all this. What’s that squared thing on his lens? Looked for the x100v on internet and it looks different. 👀
Aftermarket lens hood.
THIS IS GOLD
I have the feeling if you would put more information in your display you would have less problems with all your stuff getting accidentally changed and you don't noticing it.
Great video thanks. What strap are you using?
always a pleasure to watch your videos and your different tips. If you should choose only one, XE4 or X100V? I would really like to buy the X100V but I'm afraid of being limited but on the one hand the Xe4 seems to be great too but it seems that it is less serious,... What is your opinion of Pro? thanks to you again
@@miick1989 easier doesn’t necessarily mean better.
i am a beginner and this really helps me. thank you!! btw what camera are you using for videos?
a7siii
Thx for the tips!
Can you lock the command dial on the xe4? It doesn't seem like you can do this on the settings, or am I going crazy here?
Great stuff.
Hello my friend. I’m struggling to customize my playback screen. You mentioned being able to see recipes on playback. How do I customize that screen to show and remove icons from the review images screen
what lens hood are you running? any filters as well?
Hi Faizal, thanks for the interesting settings. So if you lock the Focus Lever - the Focus is set in the middle always ? I mean the middle focus isnt´t also always right, or do I misunderstand you?
@Steve Shreve with that you mean holding the shutter button halfway and then changing the composition?
