This is a subtle, compelling (and erotic) performance. There are other Phantoms (and other Christines) but Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman set the bar high for these iconic roles, and it has been a pleasure and privilege to watch other performers put their individual interpretations to the test.
O dear Lord. Thank you, thank you so much for preserving this immortal classic, this immortal performance in film. I hope there is a full video of the original cast of the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Michael Crawford is the one and only Phantom for me. No one comes close.
A combination of things go into casting, not just with POTO but with anything. Acting, singing if necessary (for Christine it is essential), dancing if needed (in the earlier years of POTO, Christine did a lot more pointe work with the other ballerinas and they would cast accordingly; in more recent times Christine’s ballet work has been dialed back a bit, so the actresses they cast don’t require as much dancing experience). As superficial as it may sound, looks are also a factor when it comes to casting. They have to consider how an actor looks in comparison to the other actors (do they look too much older or younger than characters who are supposed to be of similar ages? Does she look too short or too tall compared to the male leads? Etc).
The best phantom and christine! Sarah looked a lot like Katie Hall. John Owen Jones & Katie Hall should have been the 25th concert cast, they actually matched the characters. It's saddening what the mercenary Mackintosh and ALW did.
Everyone has their favorite performers in the role. I can appreciate his skills and talents, but I'm afraid I don't agree that he is "way better." But you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

I love the Don Juan scene. If there was such an opera as Don Juan Triumphant
I need that entire piano version. All other PONR pianos on UA-cam are not as good as this.
When the musical is about to go in rehearsal how do they choose a Christine? Is it by the voice? The acting?
