Soul Made: Coachbuilt Rünge Cars

- Опубліковано 26 лип 2021
- Rünge Cars (pronounced “run-ghee”) started as Chris Runge’s idea to build a car from the ground up, some basic tools, and a few books. He had a fascination with early aluminum-bodied sports cars and the coachbuilt one-offs commissioned by post-war privateer racers, and credits being exposed to many such cars from the book “Porsche: Excellence was Expected” in particular for planting the seeds.
Building something similar to those cars stayed in the back of his mind for years, until 2010, when he found a 1967 Porsche 912 for sale in North Dakota. It was listed by an elderly woman, and when she and Chris got to talking about the car, the conversation eventually led to her late husband’s collection of tools that he’d kept in the garage with the Porsche. There was an English wheel and some other basic metalworking bits gathering dust, and she was happy to sell them all to Chris, if he’d make good use of them.
Coupled with his longtime fascination with post-war coachbuilt sports racers from the likes of Zagato and Touring, Chris couldn’t shake the urge to finally embark on the project that had become part of his long-term memory. The car’s first physical manifestation came in the form of a seat frame the following year, followed by steady progress as Chris built body panels, creating a new shell for the car on an autodidactic adventure with aluminum.
Along with the tools, his Porsche’s previous owner had also collected a solid library of books on metalworking and coachbuilding, which Chris buried himself in whenever he wasn’t putting what he was learning into practice. Along with his old Porsche books as a consistent reference point, he completed his first coachbuilt car in 2012. It came out as he’d hoped, but back then he had no intention of having customers, or even really showing the car off. It was just for him, the way he’d wanted it. And not just in the sense of the finished product, but also the process. Chris loves the fact that traditional metalworking techniques are more challenging to master, and the results have a special feeling to them that would otherwise be lost by using more modern techniques.
As with anything that brings someone a great deal of satisfaction and happiness, Chris continued to pursue his coachbuilding work, and has found another layer of inspiration for his work in his likeminded customers, who appreciate and value the same things. Each creation has a mixture of its owner’s soul, its creator’s, and a piece all its own. Building by hand, out of aluminum, long hours of effort, and a drive to continuously improve, Chris Runge’s small operation in Minnesota has earned him so well-deserved attention from around the world for these soul made masterpieces.

Finally...a car owner telling his own story! This is what made Petrolicious so great. I hope you go back to this old format. It's fantastic.
The true definition of "Soul" into a car. What an inspiring video. I've seen previous video's of Runge before but never in depth like this one. Whet he produces is truly beautiful art. Thank you Petrolicious and thank you Runge
What's "Runge"?
@@tommeiner9983 this video
@@lukedanielgalon1596 It says Rünge.
Watching him make that aluminium come alive reminded me of my years at Bristol Cars...
Loved the Bristol cars
Legendary
In Germany we learned this in school and the bodyshop.
@@pierrekroner6029 we need to keep this going
Hi Christopher. I'm a filmmaker and would love to make a film like this so if you want to have a chat let me know, thanks
This is such an impressive level of skill. I love talented people being talented and passionate.
Remember, this kind of talent made the old planes in the 30-40s and they just wasted them flying over another country. Disposable stuff. What a waste...
THIS is what made THIS channel THE best during its first go around! In its first go around it was the OWNER telling the story about THEIR car, that's what's GREAT here. That said, the new presenter loves cars but it pales in comparison to THE OWNER telling us❗
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO😉
So true.....I quit watching awhile ago. Some reason UA-cam sent me this today!
@@donjuan150 Sometimes UA-cam is smart
Human endeavour at its best, Petrolicious at its finest.
I saw Leno's video about Rünge years ago and it's a great to see Petrolicious dive deeper into their passion for coach building. I love that this video was about the process from creative to technical, and less about the cars themselves. This guy's process is his product.
Steve Lowtwait ...'process is your product'.... slogan or logo for T Shirt.
This guys a legend…
Wow... His skill and expertise with simple tools is awesome
Take me as apprentice, ill work for food and a roof over my head. I love what you are doing.
Punching things into a computer and having things automated takes the MAN out of craftsMANship. There is something magical about starting with base level gear and developing your core ability really sets you up to wield great tools through your gratitude for exactly what makes them awesome. Hand making cars, fucking awesome.
This is well deserved recognition of an emerging master fabricator. Our world needs more people turning back the clock and picking up tools in addition. To books. Dream something up, learn as much as you can about it, and figure out how to make it yourself.
Just awesome!!! No production Supercar can hold a candle to a handbuilt piece of art. Thanks Chris, just magical...:-)
I make and design wooden kayaks. To travel in something you made with your own hands is a wonderful feeling. To make an entire car is out of this world. Amazing .
Really? Do you make the kayaks for yourself or do you sell them?
They take too long to sell. I wouldn't make minimum wage per hour if I made them for other people.
From France with passion and respect ✌🏼⚜️🇨🇵😎
I started watching this channel in 2013. I was sucked in by the stories the car owners told. It made the car seem like something more. I haven’t watched a Petrolicious video in a couple years because they left this format, but I’m glad to see it make a comeback. I’ll definitely be a regular viewer again if we get this more often!
Probably one of the best if not the best Petrolicious episodes ever!!
I love the gauge cluster the interior reminds me of a 50s Formula 1 car Or Auto Union from the 30s
Love the imperfections, they define the mark of the maker and his blood and sweat ❤
I have been following Chris for several builds now. As an old VW guy i certainly appreciate the aesthetics of his builds and the underpinnings
Can we take a second and appreciate the director of photography. Damn!!!
Great to see real skills like this are alive , yes soul is what it's about
Everything about this was just beautiful.
Yes. With this video, I feel like Petrolicious has returned to what drew me to this series years ago. Good work to the team behind the screen. You're back.
At the beginning I noticed the imperfections and thought "ooh, that looks a bit rough up close".
By the end I really appreciated the imperfections as they are part of the character.
Chris I been following your cars for years. I love them. Your simply one amazing artist. May this craft we love bring you many years of wealth and happiness!
What a masterpiece! Unbelievable work
Mr Runge is an artist first and foremost. The fact he is also willing to share and teach in inspirational. Bravo.
63, saw cars at Lime Rock in the 60s. Candy Poole's house, JD Iglehart and more. Impressive work you have done.
This is absolutely nuckin futs! Wow, just wow. enamored.
In the era of electronic crap toys, to see the birth of a real CAR like this and old school fashioned made, it is like a dream. Well done!
Been following Chris for years, cool to see him here! Well deserved, he’s a true craftsman!
I got to see this car at Laguna Seca a few years back. Boy was it a work of art! If only I could afford it
That little coupe has more soul than any modern exotic. I hope he gets more exposure and the chance to create some really iconic cars.
Saw your car on Jay Leon’s Garage (Valeno) and instantly subscribed.
The way you build your cars is amazing and I really believe your philosophy shines through on the finished product.
Well done sir.
This guy defines craftsmanship.
This guy is a true artist!!!
Totaly on an other level, fantastic workmanship with beautiful results amazing 👏
Doing something with heart and soul 👍 such a beautiful car
What a stunning car! How amazing to be able to learn and build such a beautiful creation. I’m in awe of both the car and its creator. Fantastic film.
Amazing work. I love the idea of making something from scratch. As an architect, it's a privilege to see all the processes, from the conversation with the client, the drawing, plans, models... to the final useful product. Saludos desde Chile :)
Makes me wonder why some people did not like this video. It is so inspiring, makes you want to do something.
I so wish I could’ve made a car like that myself. Wonderful! Thanks!
Absolutely love everything about this!
Thank you for sharing it with us!
Thanks for featuring this amazing person
Awesome story! I love how Runge is self-taught, and not that long ago! It proves that anyone can do anything (although he is undoubtedly smart and talented).
its so unfair the video is only 9 minutes long.. it should've been 2 hours long. so inspiring (l)
Fully expected this to be a small workshop in Britain somewhere. Very surprised to see an American doing this, you don't often see this style of coach building or car in America. There was a few back in the 60s and 70s that did the old European style sports car of that period and in the 80s and 90s there were a few which had a go at a more American take on the sports car and there's heaps of kit car manufacturers in the states and those who hand beat metal for hot rods and such, but this kind of work for this kind of build is very rare to see over there, and is fast becoming rare in the UK and Europe. Well done. This needs more promotion. I hope to see it in the next Gran Turismo game like they've done with small manufacturers in the past - that would give it a good bit of spot light and allow a lot of us the chance to experience it in some way.
I spent 8 months Gas-Welding Exhaust systems with Coat-Hanger - - it is amazing how the metal will follow the heat around ...
What a beautiful car reminiscent of an early Porsche but maybe even better!? Well done and please let us see any other cars which you make in the future as you have a skill most of us can only dream about.
This touched my soul...not just my mind or my technical expertise. This is not simple coachbuilding. This is spirituality!
I’ve been following Chris on social media for some years now. I have so much respect and admiration for his passion. He is so organic and rare.
Watching this video about his process is like sitting in an easy chair on a cool day nursing a cup of hot chocolate. Heartwarming and inspiring. Thanks.
This is incredibly inspiring.
Great cars, great craftsmenship!
Well done sir! Amazing handbild car and thank you for the goosebumps.
Would love to have heard more about the power plant...beautiful work.
@Martin thought I saw 2.3L on the fan shroud...fingered it was a Porsche motor of some kind...
Few people in the morden world work like this man... From the heart and soul that is.
if i had the money to buy a special car it would be a Runge, they are works of art on the road
The skill is just insane. I love these kind of videos
those hammer marks define the soul..!! wow...loved it
Beautiful, how can anyone see this and not give a thumbs up.
You Sir are a true craftsman.
Inspiring me to do what I've always wanted to do! Thank you!

I love this kind of talent !!! BRAVO !!!
Runge was the first builder who really inspired me to dream building my own car for myself. his youtube channel is also very nice. more power to you sir!
Beautiful body reminds me of the Porsche 904/356 the 300 SL and the Lotus 11 wrapped in one beautiful shell love that exposed linkage on the shifter should I bow to you sir your taste is exquisite...
In a time full of easy distractions, this guy's level of discipline is very admirable!
Thank you for putting this out there. Simply Incredible.
Long been waiting for this
Passion and art rolled into a beautiful film.
Awesome. I didn’t want the video to end.
Waau I enjoyed this tremendously. Thanks for sharing, from a fellow couch builder.
Truly a great explanation of craft, art and soul. Wonderful
Amazing. Thanks for sharing this story.
Wow, absolutely amazing craft skills. Well done Rüge!
craftsman + artistry = artisan
Man! Talk about hard work and dedication, wish someday I get to buy one!
This is mesmerizing... wow... To the 7 people that disliked this video, you are not human.
You are a marvelous in a car industry... God bless those hands and intelligence view...
I'm in love with this video. Amazing!
What an absolutely gorgeous design! 👌
This guy is a national treasure.
A truly work of art on wheels
A true work of art.
Or ,truly a work of Art.
Such remarkable artistry. What discipline and dedication.
Beautiful cars. Thanks for the video.
None of this is possible without 3 very important things; passion, talent and love of process. Once in a very great while someone comes along who possesses all 3 skills and applies them to what he loves doing most. Not to rag on Jay Leno's video but I think he was absolutely 'god-smacked' by his guy and his creations. Petrolicious has done a great job presenting is guys extraordinary work!
Wow great film. Beautiful car!
THIS is what makes the world turn. Thank you for this.
What an amazing build! This guy is a true artist. Well documented yet again by this channel. Tastefully done.
Absolutely beautiful, not just the car but also his pure passion and amazing skills! Best Petrolicious video in a long time!
That is one gorgeous car Mr. Runge, your work is exceptional.
I'm amazed with this maestro. 👌
