Thank you for all your awesome information on building the awning. Since I'm a sewer .. the only thing I would add to this for strength, would be a small rope or cord in the fold. This would really make it strong. Please keep making your informational videos!! ♥️
Man I really appreciate your hard work at showing us all how to do things a little bit cheaper, I will be doing this project soon,I have saved all your videos. Props to you. God bless
Excellent! This is such a great project, and very well executed. I'd like to add that if the grommet hole punch is used at the inside corners before the cuts are made, it will create a 'fillet" of sorts, that will be less likely to tear. Of course, reinforcing is still a good idea.
Never too much detail. My goodness. Thanks my man. I'm trying to set up a Land Rover Discovery 2 in Uganda for my family and want an awning for it, but the only way to get anything into the country reliably is by bringing it yourself on the plane-and the pre-fabbed awnings are too large dimensionally to take on the plane, at least to Uganda. I can build all of this IN AFRICA with local supplies. So-thanks a million. One hundred thumbs-up.
Watched the other video of the dude that also made a budget one, but honestly yours looks like it will hold up better in the wind, specifically socal wind. Much props!!!
Overland Under Budget, Thank you for sharing your awesome idea. I like to add a little info about polyester thread. There's a UV treated and a UV non- treated polyester thread. If you want the polyester thread to last longer select the UV treated polyester thread. If you want a thread that will outlast any fabric, use Sailrite or Tenara. This threads carry a Lifetime guarantee. Thanks again.
I used 3M outdoor carpet tape to make awnings for my gazebo which is double sided and three years later it was still stuck solid when I had to replace the awning because of sun rot. Great stuff. I also use it to fasten a faceplate to wood for turning on the lathe just to show how strong it is.
That’s awesome and thanks for the help on the design and how they work and Support them selves. I knew that I could build one for My truck. So now it’s time to get building. I like how your videos show all the little details and the stuff most video leave out to where the questions I had in the beginning I still have them after the video because they didn’t go in depth like you. Good job and I like the camper a lot great job
Having found your channel by accident and watching the awning build i knew immediately that this project and methodology was perfect for my budget. Thanks for the great content and look forward to seeing more.
Soon as I saw this 270 I subscribed and bought the template. I've done up a mock one of these in wood to test out a couple ideas. 1 was to have a 4th arm to go straight along the back as another anchor point. Then having a longer piece of metal, aluminum, to go along the edge of my jeep on the rack to just give it a little more stability of course the front bracket that attaches to the rack would be steel for strength. But I'm still playing with it... sucks that it is winter now might have to back burner this for 5 months till the weather is better :) Keep up the great videos though love the detail and thought process !!!
I made my own DIY 270 awning for my first gen DC a couple of years ago. Mine is similar but alot heavier haha! Great job on your truck, mine looks almost identical to yours except mine is Lunar Mist. Sending thanks for the awesome taco content from Texas, I really enjoy your videos.

I'm not sure if you'll see this but I would replace the metal fender washers with the rubber version. It would allow the tarp to flex more and less likely to rip around the eyelet.
Just a suggestion, if you bolt the side of the tarp (closest to the driver door) between the ARB bag and the support bar, you wont have to climb up and attach that side.
San Luis Obispo Harbor Freight! I've bought a lot of bargain tools and whatnot there! Man, I wish we were friends when I lived in town. I've since moved to Portland because it is less expensive up here
take some of that extra leftover tarp material and cut some 3" strips and sew it in the corner of the tarp to reinforce the hinge area and help stop it from ripping.
@@OverlandUnderBudget Even doing it to where the extra material will overlap the gorilla tape, it would then make your seams the same color and not so noticeable with the black tape standing out.
Have a local canvas shop that makes amazing tents (Bravo Tents, Camas, Wa)....betting this would be child's play for him...but cost some $$...I'm good with that, because I want walls. Loving the videos for the 270, I will be doing this, but not for $150. LOL
Great job! Curious about the drivers passenger door not being covered by the awning when it's raining. Was that a design limitation due to the roof rack? Or some other consideration? I have wanted to purchasing a 270 awning but I will try my hand at making it, thank you.
Love what you are doing, Thanks for sharing. Sewing it up is a good idea. I think the gorilla tape adhesive will loosen and allow the edges to creep as the tarp heats up.
First of all, these videos of this build are awesome!! Ive been looking at these 270 awnings and they really are over priced. Do you happen to have the template in cad format? I’d like to cut it out on my plasma table.
I oversized for a tahoe and to cover the front door the longest arm is 9 feet long. how do you give support for the front of the bag to hold it to the car without fallong down?
I will be making mine in the coming weeks. I just purchased the plans from you. I am going to try to do fabric instead of a tarp. I work for a Geotextile company I am going to try to see what we have that might work. I do have a couple questions though: 1. Did you weld the ends together or do they just bolt together with the bolt that olds the tarp down? 2. Did you look at aluminum? Was it too expensive?
Heck ya that’s awesome! I’d love to see what you come up with for the fabric. 1. Yep the ends are welded together 2. Currently only have steel welding setup, steel is super cheap, about $40 bucks for the metal in this project. Aluminum is rad because it’s so light, but this steel tubing is 3/4 16th wall, and the whole thing only weights about 35lbs I think? So aluminum would be maybe 20 lbs? But not a strong and for 15lbs I think it’s not worth it.
@@OverlandUnderBudget totally agree! I’m torn on the fabric. We have a liner system but I’m afraid it will be too heavy for the frame. I think I might just do the rip stop material
Great series of videos but I think I missed something. Between video 1 and 3 it looks like the mount and arms changed. Also, did you use galvanized pipe for the hinge in video 3? I'm working on an F150 now and this will be perfect.
I made the coolest custom tire cover ever for my Trooper, and used those grommets. I was disappointed to find that grommets started rusting almost immediately. How are your grommets holding up so far?
Hi , At 20 mins what about making a large corner patch to add another layer of material for strength, then glue it all down onto the corner before you fold the material back...good video tho.
Just wondering why you didnt fasten the tarp down the side in the bag. Ie like tents get tied to caravans. Then you only have one side at the back to tie up. Just a thought.
I noticed that when you looked at an item priced at 9.99 you said it was $9, and one at 6.99 you said it was $6, instead of $10 and $7 respectively. The marketing people have got you well trained!
First of all, this is amazing! Sorry if this has been asked and answered already but, how did you determine the arm lengths of 7', 7'4" & 7' and is that the order of assembly? (Meaning, is the longest arm the center arm)
You have two straps one on each end. Whilst the one at the rear/passenger side makes sense as it's used to tension the tarp, would it not be possible to mount the other end directly to the rear bracket/arm (or the mounting to the roof rack). That way, you'd only have one strap to tie down. Also, would one longer tensioning arm work as well as three shorter ones? Just a couple of thoughts to see if it can be used even more simply and speedily.
I love this build but instead of a tarp I was considering using ripstop. Would you sew the fabric in a butt end joint or just split 45* at each end and meet in the middle? Thanks!!!
Did you see those buckles and straps in that same machine? Any problems with he tape gumming up the needle when you sewed thru tape on the seams? Thanks!
Has anyone sewn the tarp onto a painters canvas? Just an idea to keep it from ripping and look better on the interior. Not sure if it will work or not just a theory
I want to know something. Why did you do the trap to the driver side? Vs the passenger side? I am planning to build one soon. But was wondering if I am missing something on placement
Good question! i placed it on the driver side because my tail gate swing out opens to the passenger side. I wanted the area i would be cooking in to be covered and not have to walk around the swingout.
Great question! So I have my tire carrier and drop table on the rear bumper. It opens to the passenger side so when I’m changing a tire on the side of the road it’s not opening into oncoming traffic. It also has the drop table. I mounted the awning so it would swing open and cover the table while I cook with the swingout open 👍🏻
