Heart's Ann Wilson | Broken Record

- Ann Wilson is the powerhouse lead singer of the band Heart, whose celebrated classic debut album, Dreamboat Annie, came out nearly 50 years ago. Last week we featured an interview with her sister and longtime bandmate Nancy Wilson, so make sure to check that out if you haven’t already: • Heart's Nancy Wilson |...
Today we’ll hear from Ann, who’s responsible for belting out and co-writing some of Heart’s most iconic early hits, like “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” and “Crazy On You.” Four years older than Nancy, Ann was the first Wilson sister to join Heart, a band that started out as a cabaret cover band. Despite undergoing multiple lineup changes since the '70s, Heart has released top 10 albums in nearly every decade in the last 50 years, and sold over 20 million albums worldwide.
Outside of Heart, Ann has also released solo material, including an album in 2023 with her band, Tripsitter.
On today’s episode Leah Rose talks to Ann Wilson about Heart’s current world tour, and the Elton John album she sings before every show to warm up her voice. Ann also explains how she would strategically place guitars around her house when having parties at her Seattle home in the '90s to encourage jam sessions with guests like Lane Staley and Chris Cornell. And she remembers singing on stage with Grace Slick and Stevie Nicks, who Ann says really is a good witch.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Ann Wilson is super-talented. I've seen her with Heart, solo with a backing cover band (when she sang Don't Give Up, a salty liquid came out of my eyes), and A Walk Down Abbey Road. Her voice is unmatched.
My favorite singer!!! No one can compare!!! Saw Heart in April still amazing live !! 🐐
Yes, Heart was really amazing live in 1979 when I first saw them with the original members. They still aren't that bad nowadays!
very good interview. flowed really well and was nicely presented.
Amazing voice. Mistral Wind still send shivers up my spine...
Great interview!!! ❤️
I love her voice, talking, singing, such a powerful vocalist. Be well Ann and keep performing.
I really like the questions about family life! It’s so relatable. Also I think I’m a lot like Anns mother 😂💙 I too listen to their audio book and the interviews and I always enjoy the personal fluffy questions the most. I am an open book myself so I hope Ann enjoys the questions as much as we do. I love the deeper conversations over the surface talk. Great interviewer, also a great LISTENER!

Just got through listening and read the WaPo article this morning...and the question I would have asked was, why would you, who just had knee replacement surgery and, as Ann is quoted saying in the article, just got over a respiratory illness ... why on Earth would any of you and your MGMT think that now was the right time for a tour? Sad to see after all of these years they have such poor mgmt and people around them that just don't give a damn about their legacy. I've been listening to Heart since I was 12. I have seen almost all of their live performances that have been recorded audio/video and saw them live like 6 times throughout my lifetime during various stages of their careers and she sounds TERRIBLE. I REALIZE that a woman at 73 can't sound like she did at 25 or even 45 but this is really bad. It's not some kind of cough illness. She's got a serious vocal problem and she's not tending to it. And her just sitting in a chair is a bad look. Before I found out about the knee surgery, I thought she was dying and not telling anyone. And let me just say, the band's recording career started in 1975 and some would argue 1976. Usually, bands life span is when they actually broke through with a first LP and not when they formed in a garage whenever. They could have waited another 2 years 2025 or 2026 (Dreamboat Annie debut year anniversary) when Ann was healthier and better rested.
