    7:28, bitter sweet talk

    The capsule came out great, it makes me want to play some Avril Lavigne. And as someone who doesn't wear bittersweet and only ever sees it in isolation (i.e. on one person at a time, one outfit at a time), hearing you talk about bittersweet as its own thing and then see that exemplified in an actual capsule collection was very useful and made so much sense. If someone asked me to put a bittersweet capsule wardrobe, I definitely would've fallen into the traps that you mentioned (sweet prints in black, black x pink etc.). But now, after seeing this, I actually feel a little bit more informed and would probably make a much better attempt at bittersweet if asked to.

      Thank you, and that's the type of response I was after (the Avril bit, that is - though I'm glad you found the whole thing informative)! And now I actually want to see you let out your inner scene queen and do a bittersweet look ^__^

    I came here to say "bittersweet, I like it but do not consider it to be like a REAL substyle" and then suddenly saw you made a recreation of what I wear the most in lolita 😅 plus the things I always wanted to own. I feel so seen, hahaha!
    Thanks for putting all of this together

      Lolita's in my comm kill anyone that say there's a substyle aside from classic, sweet and gothic... but I secretly disagree with them 🫣

      @@astralb.2647 I mean, those are the the big substyles...but they each have substyles of their own. Like bittersweet! It's like a fun, frilly flow chart.

    I love your capsule wardrobes! This one is so fun. I love the purple/pink/black together. When I started lolita 5ish years ago your capsules were a big inspiration. I wanted to do a cohesive wardrobe like you showed, unfortunately I like too many things! I'd love to see a video talking about planning these like you mentioned, maybe I'll figure out what gaps I gotta fill better.

      You just made my day, can't get over the fact that my capsule were an inspiration for you! Totally relate on liking too many things...my wardrobe IRL has a bit of everything. And thanks for the suggestion, I'll pop a wardrobe planning video on my ideas list ^__^

    It was really interesting to see this capsule come together and an informative look at bittersweet overall as someone who doesn't wear it/wasn't in the fashion at the time. I agreed with your points on how it differs from sweet lolita and would love to see you do this kind of 'build with me' video for other underrepresented substyles of lolita and give your take on them!

      @@HerRoliness I would personally love to see capsules for Punk and Wa Lolita!
      I hear about Punk fairly often but I feel there aren't as many good visual examples of it. (especially nowadays, I feel like it used to be more of 'A Thing' back in the mid/late 00's - early 10's) and it's one I've heard a few lolitas describe as a substyle they like but have trouble conceptualizing.
      As for Wa, I think with the bold colors and patterns a lot of Wa pieces have it would be cool to see those pulled into a cohesive yet still varied wardrobe!

    I never understood the whole discourse over bittersweet
    EVEN if it was just sweet w/ black prints why are ppl so adamant about hating the term and arguing with people that use it?
    I once heard someone refer to another lolita who uses the term bittersweet as "not like the other lolitas" implying that that lolita felt superior as if they were "not like the other girls"?? It's just a reach and v bullying like behavior over a term. Really shouldn't be that serious.

    Bittersweet Lolita should be its own thing but so many Lolitas don't want it to be. Its more then just.... Sweet prints in black color ways. Its that but with spooky/gothic motifs and themes. Legit pastel goth but lolita. Thats not to say black sweet prints are automatically bittersweet. Royal Princess Alice x Tama Sweet Monster Castle JSK is a PERFECT example of bittersweet print. Most halloween prints form AP are bittersweet.

    • @HerRoliness
      @HerRoliness  Рік тому +2

      Yes, I do think it's distinct from "sweet in black" (and I like the analogy to pastel goth) but it does all boil down to the question of how much is anything it's own substyle vs a theme or motif? There's no agreed upon answer and I don't think there every will be ^__^

    bittersweet lolita here! i’m exclusively bittersweet! i enjoy the sweet but i don’t feel like myself if i don’t have the dark shades too, and gothic is a bit too elegant and edgy so i stay in the middle ground _(┐「ε:)_

  • @frillSquid
    @frillSquid Рік тому +4

    i appreciate the effort you put into this wardrobe. however, bittersweet is a pointless label for tagspam and definitely not a substyle, unless we're getting to the granularity where every theme or twist in styling is its own substyle (i.e., calling chocolate prints or florals their own substyle). at that level, substyle becomes completely irrelevant, because every person's unique styling can count as their own substyle.
    bittersweet originated as a blog post by a goth who didn't want her sweet dresses (such as the grey x black music note special set from meta) confused with actual sweet lolitas-- literally saying she was not like other lolitas because goth identity was too important to her. this isn't editorializing, it's a documented instance. bittersweet as it was in 2012ish was really just mashing creepy cute kyary pamyu pamyu style in with lolita, and really had nothing to do with the original meaning of bittersweet. i wouldn't hazard to call deco-lolita or mori lolita their own lolita substyle, so i wouldn't do the same for creepy cute-influenced styles. for these lower-level divisions, they might be themes (or sub-substyles) that you can mix in, but calling it a substyle on the same level as punk or gothic is really pushing it.

    • @HerRoliness
      @HerRoliness  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for the comment.
      You do make a very good point that bittersweet is really, at best, as sub-substyle and I agree with that (and probably should have, in retrospect, called it a theme or styling choice or something else). I stand by my opinion that it is more than just "sweet in black" but it certainly is hard to draw the lines, and to (as you say) know when we should draw lines and it's pointless.
      Ooooh do you have a link to that blog post? Don't know if I ever saw it back in the day!
