    I didn't struggle with any of the German alphabets that much yet. I am learning Russian and after Russian German seems easier than it may have been if I had started German first.
    I am also finding that there's many similarities between German and English. In fact, Old English sounds a lot like german.

    I find R is the hardest letter to pronounce. Your way of explaining how it’s “not” supposed to sound like and facing straight to the camera while pronouncing makes it so much easier to grasp or understand. But I still don’t know how it’s expected to sound like in other words, though.

      I personally find the difference between O and U a bit difficult (because they sound quite different in my native language) and was surprised to see Ü and Ö sound the same to many people, I figured it is because we have Ö in my native language so I am very used to the sound. I tried finding something that could help and realized that it actually does sound quite similar if you are not used to it. I found this, which I think might be helpful: www.thegermanprofessor.com/how-to-pronounce-o-and-u/
      It has some written explanation to the differences, and also a lot of sound-examples.

    American English is my native language, and after thinking about it a little, we may not use all these sounds in actual conversation, but we still make these sounds without even thinking about it. Words don't always express things adequately; sometimes, the sounds we make convey what we're feeling, and some of those sounds happen to be strictly German. From my point of view, then, there's no reason to panic about German pronunciation if you were born and raised in the United States. I hope this helps.

    10:28 According to Theodor Siebs' "die deutsche Bühnenaussprache" (1898), the Standard German pronunciation for the letter "r" was a rolled-r. Nowadays, only the Bavarian people and the Swiss practise it. Some German singers employed this rolled "r" when they pronounce German words. They are Heino and Roy Black.

    being a native indonesian learning english and mandarin while also reading the qur'an which is basically old poetic arabic actually made reading these alphabets easier for me haha, the hardest for me would be the ö..
    Context: some words are similar to english (i mean of course obviously), indonesians read the alphabets with an "e" instead of an "i", the "ü" exists in the chinese language and the "R" when used in front of a word is read similarly like the arabic character "خ" (Kha/Kho)

    Thank you! This video was very helpful. It helps me practice my pronunciation. I find that I struggle with some German word endings. Such as the endings -d, -g, -ig. Will you be making a video about pronunciation in these ways, too? Thanks!

    • @yourgermanteacher
      @yourgermanteacher  5 років тому +2

      Thank you Michelle! :)
      about the endings you struggle with: generally speaking try to pronounce the last letter of each word stronger than the other letters. this helps your listeners to understand you properly as there are lots of similar endings with only small differences. That you will see once you get to the adjective endings. That said, the -d you can pronounce almost like a -t. a soft t. the -g ending is mostly seen with -ung or ig. ung you dont pronounce the g and for -ig there are actually 2 ways to pronounce it. the first is the more common way and pronounced like a "ich" A good training for this are the numbers. watch my video "Numbers 20-100". But if you want you can also pronounce it like a "ik". In Austria and Switzerland the -ig will be pronounces like "ik". So if this is easier for you just do it this way. And for words ending with -g like "Tag, Nachmittag, Mittag..." you can also pronounce the g like a soft "k". hope this helps! :)
