I bought the PTU-71 unit about a month ago (it’s the half rack unit of this one). Myself and my vocalist were incredibly impressed with the tonal quality of the capsule for one thing (he was able to dial in his EQ relatively similar to his regular wired vocal mic for near-similar tonal characteristic). Another thing is the scanning feature. This was a huge plus to me. One thing to mention. We used this unit recently at an event for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Generally it’s an insanely congested RF environment especially being right next to the stadium and the arena. Not to mention Houston already being very RF congested as is. We used these mics and had ZERO DROPOUT whatsoever. It sounded crisp and clear. I have it mounted in the rack with the available center mount rack ears (which are horrible btw-they don’t fit correctly in the width of the rack) and the antenna mounted on the front. Anyway, I would not hesitate to use this system literally anywhere now bc of the performance it gave us at the rodeo.

Thing is… Just make a custom miniXLR P10 ts cable and wire the mini XLR to 1 - GROUND and 3 - TIP

Great video as always. I do have the pt10 in ear monitor and the ptu7000 the one with 4 mics and sound amazing. Although one of the mics does not want to connect to the unit. I have to check that out but other than that i love phenyx pro quality 😊
Hmm that’s interesting… could be an IR port possibly. But I do agree, it’s a pretty killer deal for this and they sound great!
Hey just a little tidbit about using different mics with this system. i needed a smaller earset mic, and learned a few things in the trial and error process of getting one that worked. The Shure style mics with the 4 pin connectors work. i tried a Samson 3 pin that didn't work. Did some googling and found different pin wiring among the different manufacturers. (the shure style mic i use has 4 pins but the center pin is unused. So there is an extra female pin hole but it works with the 3 pin phenyx bodypack. ymmv. Thanks scott, love your reviews. Hey Scott thx for the video! I just purchased this unit. I plan on using two body pacs for my two guitars. Should I run each pac on a different channel or can I use one channel out to my amp and pair both PACs to the same channel? Thx🤘
As long as the transmitters are not on at the exact same time you should be good with setting them to the same channel 👍

So I've been eyeing this system for a while, and maybe you can help me get over my issue... I do sound for a youth theater program. It's a theater group that's grouped with about a dozen other youth theater programs in the Chicago area, and we have been able to pool our resources together for some really great equipment for our shows. For our shows we have Shure ULX bodypacks, and with Countryman B3 lavs. I would never try to replace those with these, BUT... We also have classes locally every week, and at the end of each set of classes we do a showcase so the kids can show their parents what they've learned. The mics we have available there are HORRIBLE. Well, maybe the mics aren't horrible, just not good for our use - SM58's with the gain cranked to be used like a choir mic, so it's feeding back all the time. I keep thinking that three of these sets would be really great. I purchased the PTU-71 (I believe it's the exact same system with only 2 units instead of 4) with the two handsets a couple of years ago. I really like the mics, and have never had any issue with them cutting out. But the placement of the mute button is ATROCIOUS! It's exactly where so many people hold their hand. On the Shure mics I use, I can powerlock them so nobody can accidentally shut them off, but these get shut off unknowingly by people all the time. From the look of it, the bodypack has a similar mute button. I can possibly see the benefit of such a button if I were doing my own sound for my own show, but when I'm handing it off to people who have no idea how to actually use a microphone (and let's be honest, that's most people), it becomes more of an issue... So have you had issues with the bodypacks being muted? I mean, if you're giving it to someone to wear during a wedding ceremony, you're not exactly able to just go up and fix it for them.
Yeah unfortunately people can bump a mute switch which can be frustrating with these types of systems :/ especially if someone doesn’t know how to use them
Regarding when you connected your guitar into the wireless body pack, using 1/4" to into XLR...

I have two of these - the bodypacks leave a little to be desired but the handhelds are damn near pro quality as long as you are aware of their limitations.
I was definitely impressed with the headset mic quality! But yeah those handhelds are top notch especially!
@@ScottUhlMusic I work in musical theatre and comparing these bodypacks to Shure or Sennheiser is unfair, I know (a tenth of the price). I just wish the distance between these bodypacks and the Shure BLX were a little closer quality-wise. The handhelds are arguably BETTER than the BLX line, if you ignore the capsule differences!
Definitely wouldn’t compare these to Shure or sennheiser, you do get more with those. But still, these PTU are great wireless, especially for the price!
Curious what issue you have with the body packs? I’ve used the handhelds more live.
@@ScottUhlMusic The primary thing I've noticed is that the bodypacks have a lot more noise than the handhelds do. I haven't yet figured out if this is due to RF interference (this isn't a diversity system, after all), low-quality preamps, or a design issue like a grounding/shielding problem. There's 0 metal in the bodypacks compared to the all-metal construction of the handhelds, which is why I lean toward grounding/interference. The mic pre these bodypacks have likely can't be that good at this price. The load impedance must be pretty small (compared to Shure or Sennheiser), so buying a better lav is risky if its gonna be pushing 2k ohms. Of course, this really only affects dead silent moments (theatre) and likely isn't an issue for an already-high noise floor like a concert venue/bar/etc.
When you use your guitare, do you connect it to an amp? And how?

It’s pretty wild. But if you have to go into a pedalboard or something like that, it might not make the most sense to use something like this for guitar
Anyone know if the handhelds have interchangeable capsules? Example being if I wanted to change it for a Shure Beta87 capsule?

Hey Scott, Have you ever heard of LD systems? They make wireless mic's, instruments and IEM's aswell and fall into the same price range as all the Phenyx Pro gear. LD systems is availible in Europe and Phenyx is availible in USA. Could you make a compare video(s) between both brands to check if they are the same but the only difference is you can get them in different continents? Thanks as always to make musicians realize what equipment to invest in.

How are the plosives and handling noise? Interested in a system like this for guest speakers at conferences etc.
Plosives are good, especially compared to that other one I reviewed. There is a tiny bit of handling noise, which does happen with cheap stuff. But it still sounds great for sure!

They have a double mono IEM system in 1U of rack space. The PTM 22 I believe is what it’s called. I know at one point they were working on a 4 in 1U IEM system. That would be a game changer for sure

You would need to use both body packs in order to get stereo.
Hey Scott thanks for the great review as always! I'm interested in the guitar cable connector but had a question -- it looks like the link you posted is for a 4 pin mini connector, but on the Phenyx website it looks like the Phenyx body pack takes a 3 pin mini connector? Could you confirm which one it needs and if the 4 pin does in fact work for the Phenyx?

Sm58 is going to be better, but this one is still great and very useable

You can use any combo of mics and body packs. 4 mics, 4 body packs, or mic and match (like 3 mics and 1 body pack)

@@ScottUhlMusic I was also asking because I am a bit skeptical on the reliability of the bodypacks being used as a guitar system since that's not what it was created to do and I can't find anyone else on the internet that has tried using it as a guitar system. Have you used it as a guitar system for gigs or a long period of time? Is it reliable?
I know another comment said they had issues getting it to work with guitar. Or at least finding the cable. I did not use this extensively with guitar, so I honestly don’t know.

I’ve bought this unit after watching your review on this video… But I am having an issue with the equipment:
I can’t - at all - make it work with my guitars: I’ve tried the T4F/P10 cable (didn’t work) and also tried the T3F/P10 (also didn’t work) and I just CANT for the love of god MAKE IT WORK with any instruments…
It only works with the included Britney headsets and the microphone, but not at all with my guitars (which is what I bought it for after watching your video)
The unit detects the bodypack’s antenna turned on but it doesn’t receive any signal at all which is pretty frustrating
Am I doing something wrong? Are there any tricks for making it work with a guitar? Thanks

I currently have three Carvin IEMS (Planning on getting a Phenyx 900 mhz with two packs to round out the system) and we have one wireless unit, but are looking into the above one. I already got one of the phenyx rack plates, so I have five antennas for it. Can I put the three IEM antennas next to each other, then put the wireless mic system(also Carvin AUdio) On the far side? So antennas would look like X X X 0 0 x x so iem, iem, iem, Space space, Wireless Mic 1, Same wireless mic 2?
You are starting to get a lot of wireless all in one rack. That’s usually not a great idea, as I go over in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Xgw96rY4TAc/v-deo.html
4 or more is pushing it. However, you can separate them by spacing them out on stage so they aren’t all together. Or you can look at antenna combining and/or distribution.
@@ScottUhlMusic If i put say the iems on the front of the rack, and antennas for the two wireless recievers (Guitar and Vox) on the back of the rack would that be enough separation?
Usually they recommend 6 feet of separation between wireless. But you might be okay with 5. If you start to get dropouts you’ll know why 👍
No dropouts with guitar?
Dropouts can happen for soooooooo many reasons. Bad antenna placement, bad frequency selection, too many wireless together, too long of a distance, etc.
But using best practices I did not get dropouts with this system 👍
I wasted my money on such a Phenyx Pro system and it cost me gigs. I’m telling my professional peers to avoid this brand.
I disagree completely, and I’ve used this a lot, and have a lot of other positive comments on it. I stand by my videos on PP products and still highly recommend them for a good budget friendly system
