FMF Gnarly- First Look

  • I just installed an FMF Gnarly pipe on my 2017 KTM 250EXC. The Gnarly adds bottom end power, but on the 17&18 KTMs is said to not take much away from the top end. Weight wise it its about 212g heavier than the FMF Fatty which I was previously using. But I'm not going to use a carbon guard with it because the steel is thicker than the Fatty. So the Gnarly is actually a little lighter than the Fatty + carbon guard. Very interested to see how it performs. Will use it on Saturday and be sure to comment in the ride vide regarding how it performs.

    I love your videos. I have the same bike in the US. I bought the gnarly pipe after damaging the original. It does have more bottom end but the bike is noticeably slower at rising through the RPM's. Once you get it on top, it runs just fine. I decided to switch to the fatty pipe and am much happier. It now revs up faster and has the excitement a 250 should have. Just my opinion...

      I rode with the Gnarly today. It adds quite a bit of bottom end. I didn't find it slow to rev out. On the top I thought it was very similar to the Fatty which I was using before. I really like it. But there are a lot of different variables (carb, jetting, reeds, power valve spring) which unless exactly the same could cause observed differences on two bikes...

    Too funny, I'm literally ordering one of these today for my 250. Thanks for sharing. I'm curious if you'll need to make any adjustments to your jetting/air screw as a result of the new pipe? Speaking of which, I have a video request :). Could you do a video on dialing in your air screw with the Kiehin and your 250? There are a few videos online outlining how to do this, but they're terrible. Your instructional videos are hands down the best on the net. Would love your insight on how to get the carb running perfectly using the air screw (assuming the jetting is correct of course). Just some food for thought :).

      I haven't finished dialing the tuning in on the Stic yet. I'll be receiving a couple of different needle jets for it any day now and will continue tuning once they arrive. Once it's set up and running well I'll do a full review video...

    Hey man. Do you know if the gnarly header fits with the stock silencer on the '12 300 exc? Can't find the answer anywhere.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 років тому

      Typically the FMF pipes have the same header size as stock so they are compatible with stock silencers. However, I don't have any experience with the 2012 model though so probably best to send FMF a message to double check.

    I have kinda a dumb question, just wondering how bad it really is to have some small dents in the pipe? no one really explains it

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому

      I wouldn’t worry about it unless you notice a difference in the performance.

    • @daveclark2929

      Hope you don't mind an add on to this as what's written above is correct .
      This applies to large dents however.
      If you think of it like this, the exhaust for a two stroke is an Expansion chamber. Alter the shape of the chamber in a certain place and it affects the volumes flow design so the gas and shock waves from combustion behave differently , makes it less efficient so can alter performance.

    I'm curious for the results. I had a gnarly on my 2008 KTM 200 and the bottom end was great but it lacked the top end. I put the stocker on and I felt it barely lost any bottom end but gained the top end. So I'll be waiting for your results.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому +3

      I rode today with the Gnarly. It adds a decent amount of bottom end and I didn't really notice any difference in the top end. Really like it. It's a keeper...

    Hi, is there same differences in the shape and is it bigger or smaller than standard KTM Pipe_? Thanks

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому

      Milos Zivkovic - Compared to the stock pipe the shape is different. It has better clearance from the ground and is a little less likely to get damaged during crashes

    • @milosbgd
      @milosbgd 6 років тому

      Tokyo Offroad ok, understand. I made some cage around my stock pipe therefore i ask is it different because i would like to keep this cage guard :)

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому

      Milos Zivkovic - I see. It’s probably OK, but it will depend on how tightly the cage fits.

    • @milosbgd
      @milosbgd 6 років тому

      yes, generaly It has some space between 5mm and 1cm, depend in which part of the pipe. thats why i have small concern about the Gnarly shape :)
