I Didn't Know São Paulo Was So Italian🇮🇹🇧🇷 (

- São Paulo. The megacity of not just Brazil, but all of Latin America. If you're flying to Brazil, this is typically the only way in, and the only way out. I didn't quite know what to expect: we're used to hearing about favelas and robberies in the country, which leads one to imagine a disorganized city barely holding it together. That's not São Paulo. There's way more money here than you'd expect, and many parts looks as modern as anywhere else in the world. There's the largest Italian and Japanese diasporas in the world. It's a thriving city on the surface.
But as always, the truth is more complicated than that.

My grandparents immigrated to São Paulo after WWI and my wife in the 70’s. Yep! I was just in São Paulo recently. I loved it! Avenida Pualista, Oscar Freire, Parque Minchocao, Liberade district, etc!
Funny how the locals were saying it’s dangerous? I never felt unsafe, granted I didn’t really go out at night and I’m 6’2, so nobody really ‘messed’ with me.
Also, you’re brave taking the Metro, Looked crowded! Uber was so cheap in Brazil, I just used that to get around.
Because their "dangerous" threshold is much lower. São Paulo is as safe as New York. Both cities have essentially the same murder rate.
famous stereotypes that do not match reality and statistics, as São Paulo has 10 fewer deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants that are considered by the UN, as safe and accepted.
Like I said in another comment, the (bad) fame stuck with Sao Paulo due to the 80s and 90s. Sao Paulo was one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil back then. Many of us grew up or spent a good deal of our lives watching news about violence in Rio and Sao Paulo. It also helps that, due to the fact that its so big and a major economic hub, news related to violence in Sao Paulo are more often broadcasted to the whole country and this feeds the bias even further. But violence has declined sharply since then. The worst places in the country are, by far, in the North and Northeast of Brazil right now (when it comes to big cities). That doesn't mean Sao Paulo is completely safe, and also there are good and bad areas, but considering the country as a whole, São Paulo is a pretty solid place to be. I'm a brazilian and I always feel safe there. Just don't go flashing expensive smartphones around because that turns you into a target in any big city.

People are so blinded by the stereotypes and assumptions of a place that they forget to notice how deep, rich, and diverse their culture is. Every Brazilian wants to immigrate...until they actually move abroad and realize that Brazil is a paradise. Every single Brazilian that I know who chose to move abroad ended up returning home after a few years. Decades ago, countries in the Northern Hemisphere had a lot to offer and Brazil was considerably less developed than them. Nowadays the difference is not that obvious anymore. Some wrong information here, first off, São Paulo has a muder rate of 4.9, while New York has a murder rate of 5.5, the reason most people say its more dangerous than it actually is is because brazilians have a bad tendency of thinking and saying this country is way worse than it actually is, i think that is due to us being accustomed to hearing propaganda from other places that makes them sound and look better than they actually are. São Paulo is the safest capital in Brazil by quite a big margin - the murder rate is around 4.6 for 100k, just about the same as New York. However, there are some neighbourhoods where it's more dangerous than literal warzones. Of course, those places are usually far away from places where people visit and most of the violence is between criminals or between the police and criminals. As a general rule, São Paulo is a safe city for tourists and residents and most people wanting to leave Brazil is mostly because of politics and how unpredictable things like economy really is. Not even downtown and Japantown where you visited is really all that dangerous, it looks seedy but it's just because is old and cluttered.

We love our diversity ❤️🇧🇷
Brazil is home to the world's largest Japanese population outside the country - estimated at 2 million
The population of Brazil of either full or partial Lebanese descent is estimated by the Brazilian and Lebanese governments to be around 7 million people.
Very cool video. I was always advised not to wear football shirts but presume you had no issues with your Palmeiras one. Also, has anyone likened your mannerisms and voice to Steve Buscemi before?
Thanks for the quality content
Si si si eres Rubio rubio ( es broma solo lo escribí por q dices a no lo eres )
@@ranielrodriguez947 jajjaa 🤣
all your videos are amazing!
I already left my like
good video and thanks for sharing it.
Much love bro here in Uganda 🇺🇬
I take his perspective on anything he mentions as gospel because in fact he really has been around enough to tell differences between places he travels to
Can't wait for the next one...as usual!
Great video, loved your journey here in Brazil, and I love the fact that you seemed to enjoy your time here, as a quick note, in 2:38 he said "here in eatalia" wich would be the name of the restaurant you were
You give a great insight into different cultures.
Boa sorte.
Enjoyed the video..Looking forward to the next..I've seen them all and you never disappoint me..Safe journey's..
Hope you had a good time man , love the football top and one off my dream destinations Brazil
I died a little inside watching you try to eat that pizza with your hands lol
If there is one great investment that you made Tommy is learning all these languages...it is really makes huge difference in your interactions
Amazing content always, I love how you interact with people
Man you have to visit Ilha Bela in São Paulo, that Island is part of the state of São Paulo, its just super safe and beautiful! Ive been there three times and saw people from all over the world there! Nature in Brazil is beautiful!
you are amazing man...you are showing Brazil in a very natural way...I'm from Rio de Janeiro...could you show the states of "Minas Gerais" or "Espírito Santo"...please. .they are not shown much by travelers from other countries
You are hands down the ebst travel vlog!
Congrats dude!
Definitely the ebst.
Another banger Tommy. Thanks for the history, fun facts and breaking people with your linguistical swag. Safe travels boludo! 🙃
also, danger is relative. i suggest that sao paulo is not as dangerour as georgetown, guyana.
i was once broke down on I75 by tifton, GA. this cop pulled over to give me warnings over where to stay and where not to stay. as he was trying to be genuinely helpful, i was polite and kept on thanking him for his help, but what i really wanted to say was "dude, i grew up in NYC in the 70s. i've lived in pretty sketchy places in atlanta. i've been to many a sketchy area of orlando ,miami and fort lauderdale. there is nothing that you have in tifton that can possibly frighten me in the least."
