I see that Brazil focuses a lot more on nationality than other places I've been to. It could be because miscegenation is so common there (so many foreigners moving in through their history) that people think very little of it now, as there is not a defined "Brazilian look". "Oh, I got my eyes from my greatgrandmother but my hair is def dad's", and sometimes they comment on having learnt this and that from a certain culture in their family's past... But at the end of the day, they call themselves Brazilians first with very little thought, even if they don't love the country to bits because politics. I think it's nice. They managed to dilute a topic that triggers so many questionable reactions in some places into something they explore for the joy of it.
PS: Thank you for the kind comments! I'll try to elaborate my thoughts a bit, I hope this sounds accurate too. There's much more mention among Brazilians of "which nationalities are mixed in your family" rather than "which ethnicities are mixed in your family", because, in their view, the color of your skin being an accurate representative of who you are makes little sense to them (again, miscegenation). The culture, whoever, that you and/or your family have chosen to carry into the future is less of a blurry lens. However! It is true that among them a "caucasian looking" person might be carrying forward the aspect of the culure of an afro or asian familiy , learnt from cousins or friends, and that's perfectly normal too! In fact, I think they don't quite register that **deeply** what the person doing this or that looks like most of the time. Maybe only to realise that they look different from most people from the state they are in (Bahia, for example, has a lot of African descents), but only to be quickly followed by "- and that's alright".

    • @leocalves
      @leocalves 2 роки тому +43

That's true. Down here in southern Brasil there are japanese, german and italian cities around, but at the end of the day everyone feels genuinely brazilian. I've realized it after living in the UK where people are bonded to their living place. In my city takes place the 2nd largest japanese descendent community, all of them speaking less than 10 japanese words lol

+@@lucaskioshi4268 Kioshi, is that an indigenous or Hawaiian name or an anime character name and you from Hawaii or USA?
I don't believe it, did you, already know the Japanese came to USA in 1880 or 85 29 years before brazil in 1909?
Did you realize that means USA has more Japanese in the world outside Japan while brazil has the largest Japanese in actually in south america as the koreans not the world, that don't make sense, because the reason the Japanese did not go to brazil first and then USA and many Japanese speak English move to USA and Canada, not brazil, because brazil is not an English communication country for them to speak there so they don't know portuguese well, see?
I am serious and still bothered/outraged by those articles or people count the wrong way when the Japanese came first and made it more then that or this in each country, it's just bizarre that they made a huge mistake that USA don't have more Japanese in USA from 1880 then brazil when in 1908, USA got them early and brazil late!
Also I know a Japanese native told me after the halt in wwII to brazil from Japan for 10 years I've read, he said Japan stopped immigration in 1973 to brazil and no new Japanese immigration, since just like the Japanese in mexico and dominican republic stopped the immigration from Japan too and brazil would be having a smaller Japanese population like mexico, argentina or other spanish speaking latina countries, but the chinese like in other latin american countries have more chinese then the Japanese just as in brazil, because they came way before the 20th century and have chinatowns in all latin american countries like in brazil.

in Brazil they don't say 'I am of Japanese descent, or Japanese ancestry'. Here the father and mother can be born in another country, but if you were born in Brazil you are considered Brazilian no matter the nationality of the parents.
Even those who were born abroad, but who came to Brazil as a child, when this person grows up, they say 'I'm Brazilian, but I was just born in another country' and we all consider ourselves Brazilians too.
Brazilian culture cannibalizes and supersedes others. even in this Japanese neighborhood, this happens.

What i like the most here in Brazil is that, there's a lot of different cultures here, like in Bahia, where you can find a lot of African religiously, tradition and culture, or Rio Grande do Sul where you can find differents immigrants from German, Polish and others. Brazil is really a blend of cultures.

Definitely Ivana looks more local in São Paulo. If you go to south of the country, where there are more German immigrants, Steve would look more local.

Brazil is so diverse that you literally can't tell if a person is a local or foreign by the way they look - anyone can be a Brazilian, and that is one of the most interesting features of Brazil specially to travellers from overseas that come to visit the country and its different regions. It's a 'melting pot'. :)

Liberdade is a great place, I have to go back there one day. Brazilian food is always delicious, the fried sushi that you ate is called hot Filadélfia, is really popular because Brazilians like fried food and don't like raw fish (some do like, but the majority don't). The only sad thing of this video is the conversion of real to dollar 😭, is so sad to us brazilians that our money is a joke! It's good for you that earns in dollar! Brazil ends being a cheap place to visit.

Actually is called "hot roll". Filadelfia is a vegan like sushi brazilian way.

The burgers in the Hello Kitty café are FIRE. They're relatively cheap (around 30 reais, depending on how much meat in the bun) and use wagyu meat (probably not a super high grade, but it's for burgers, c'mon). Most people don't go to Liberdade looking for burgers, but damn, I love those. If you guys ever return there, I really think you'd love them too.

While we have to study about worldwide geography to a certain degree, I feel like foreigner don't do the same. No one knows about Brazil's immigration waves, how rich our country is in terms of cultural exchange. When people say USA is diverse they have no idea how beautiful our country is while we built such a big cultural exchange creating our own identitiy, we are all brazilian. Nothing more or nothing less, if you are born here, this is your heart no matter what you look like!

you should also see Bom Retiro. In the past was the Jewish district, then was the korean one, so today you can see both sides in the same place.
The Time Out have recently elected the Rua Três Rio (inside Bom Retiro) one of the 10 coolests streets in the world (7° place)

Hi guys! Liberdade today is more like an Asiantown than just a Japantown. There's a big community of chinese along with taiwanese and korean as well. I'm myself chinese-brazilian and I go to Liberdade when I need to by some chinese groceries and eat some authentic chinese food. The koreans are more concentrated in Bom Retiro neighbourhood wich is also an old jewish one. You can find there lots of korean restaurants and cafes and some jewish delis.

    Hey guys, nice video
I’ve used to live in São Paulo and recently moved to Canada, so I do have some good tips of places to go and eat :)
    To drink:
    - For good local beer in São Paulo, try the Croma Beer on Vila Madalena - once in Vila Madalena there’s a lot of good places to go, but make sure to have a beer at brewdog and check the Tomie Otake building and museum right across the street
    To eat:
    - try Jiquitaia, one of the best restaurants I’ve been in my whole life.
    - Also try the best coxinha and caipirinhas in town at Bar Veloso.
    Places to go:
    - Aquário de São Paulo - it’s mindblowing, there’s even a polar bear.
    - Sala São Paulo: a beautiful musical place
    - take the touristic tour at Teatro Municipal, it’s worth it!
    - Parque Ibiraquera
    - famiglia mansine

Brazil is like India, there are so many mixes, you can't really look at someone and say they are not Brazillian/Indian. I look Brazillian :)

São Paulo has all kinds of culture, in the south of Brazil there are several more isolated cities, I am Brazilian but mine in the south of the 86% and descendant of Ukrainians coming in 1888, a neighboring city here has most descendants of Poland coming, more in the south of brazil there are cities with descendants of germans and italians, if you get the war in braisil greater concentration are of afro brazilians and indians, southeast has a greater concentration of japanese outside the north of japan, brazil has people from all over the world coming from the last century forming a population of 220 million people hahah

The term for Brazilian - Japanese is nipo-brazilian. The nipo comes from Nippon, which is Japan's actual name. We call them that out of respect. It's sort of a nod, like "we know you"
